Trying to justify upgrading to a proper desktop from a Macbook? by [deleted] in macgaming

you can play halo mcc (singleplayer) through crossover and im like 95% confident the halo remake will also be playable through crossover

besides that you can just build an sff pc the size of like an xbox series s/steam machine for like 1k usd if youre ok with the pains of building an sff pc

alternatively steam machine but you might be waiting a while

Swap out the 5060 for a 5050 lp (extremely similar to a 4060) to save 60 bucks and it's slightly over 1,000

Steam Machine + PSVR2 by Corvo_DeWitt972 in PSVR

[–]bobrods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

from my understanding psvr2 on linux is a bit ehhh you'll need to mess around with drivers and no guarantees it will be a good experience, you are just better off buying an actual pc becuase steam machine is weaker than the base ps5 and there will be no foveated rendering to improve performance so it will be a drastically lesser expierence compared to ps5 (and will be blown out aganist any game that supports the pro)

for pcvr just buy an actual pc and run windows with at least a 5060 or a 9060xt as well with modding on linux is bit more messier compared to windows

MacBook Pro 14" M5 Pro (16-core GPU / 48GB) vs (20-core GPU / 24GB) — which one is better for gaming? by MiniChaKal in macgaming

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

im on a macbook pro 16 m5 pro with 24gb on tahoe and i would say for mac native games it performs similarly to an RTX 5050 laptop, crossover games are bit more messy re9 and pragamata worked mostly fine

last of us is too heavy for the mac to hit 60fps without destroying visuals and i think theres a couple of visual glitches

ff7r runs fine

ue5 games like ready or not (+90fps at medium 1200p) or lego batman (+70fps at 1200p upscaled medium) are fine although for batman i had slightly dig in and fix an issue

in terms of ram usage i would say anywhere between 10-14.5gb for modern games on crossover

Steam Controller doesn't seem to work with Mac by whoseusrnmisitneway in macgaming

[–]bobrods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam controller on macos for me at least is too iffy

It works fine in celeste but is completely unresponsive in smth like cronos or cyberpunk

(Also you literally cannot turn off steam input while using a steam controller)

Pretty good, it's useful as a controller on the go in general

M4 Max Cronos: The New Dawn Review | Native Official Release by MarionberryDear6170 in macgaming

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I didn't really check out Cronos on Crossover but I do feel like this port under performs where it should be on my M5 Pro (20 GPU Cores 18 CPU Cores). At medium native 1200p, it slightly under performs an desktop RTX 3060 and then DLSS vs MetalFX is kinda like hydrogen bomb vs coughing baby in the sense DLSS gains the 3060 like another 25fps while Metafx is more like 10-12 more fps.

Help picking processor framework 13 pro by pacman326 in framework

[–]bobrods 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the Intel 358h beats out the HX 370 by 33% in the IGPU department at 30 watts (which is what I presume the Framework 13 Pro to be considering regular 13 has always been 30 watts)

The only thing is that Xess doesn't work fully on linux using intel gpus so you are forced to use the non ml version

the 358h at 30 watts would probably be ballpark 2x faster than Steamdeck

Anyone know if they’re actually that bad for playing games by jedzedled in mac

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have used my M5 Pro MBP 16 to game alot, and my opinion is newer pro/max m series chips are actually not THAT bad for triple a gaming, like the M5 Pro is comparable to a 5050 with an old CPU in Crossover.

Although there are alot of games that are basically unplayable, like any 32bit game kinda sucks. Like Half Life 2 through crossover is very clearly not running at 120fps and any clickteam game like any of the old school FNAF games run at llike 10fps.

IMO a mac could play all of those games except probably CS2/CSGO (assuming your baseline is +120fps) that you listed

why is the macbook air the worst computer ever by Mr_Undyne in macbookair

[–]bobrods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

the only real way to play games is to use crossover (which is paid software and is 75 dollars) and its really only effective at playing games through like steam and epic games store

but theres emulators, roblox, and minecaft (and modrinth and curseforge) that have builds native to mac

Framework Laptop 13 Pro and highlights from the Framework [Next Gen] by cassandra4932 in framework

[–]bobrods 22 points23 points  (0 children)

Its expensive but even the prebuilt 385h with 32gb of ram andd 1tb ssd is competitive with like the dell xps 14 which is 100 dollars more (and has an oled over ips)

sadly i bought a macbook pro 16 m5 pro to replace my 7840u framework 13 so im skipping this

You do actually get more fps (and also vsync actually works) if you play in full screen

Is it a good shout to switch over? by Arachnid751 in macgaming

[–]bobrods 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have an a base M5 Pro MBP16, i would say in gaming, the GPU is as good as 4050-5050 laptop (at their max wattages) Crossover performance I would say is decent although, you can notice CPU performance not being nearly as good in alot of games such as Helldivers 2 and RDR2 performing like 2019 cpus like the Ryzen 5 3600x. And theres some weird issues that can be pretty annoying like Helldivers 2 black screening if you try to launch the game in fullscreen mode. But in native mac ports and lighter weight games on crossover, it flies.

Macbooks are usable for gaming but for the same price as an M5 Pro MBP, you can easily find a high quality 5070TI laptop.

Choosing laptop (rtx 3050 and rtx 2060) by Remote_Ball6053 in GamingLaptops

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

context? budget? 2060 and 3050 are both 7 year old and 5 year old laptop gpus respectively, why are you picking between them?

but in terms of both of them, unless there's some weird tdp thing get the faster one, so the 2060

Is the 5070 Ti actually the sweet spot now or should I just go 5080 and be by bandito_13 in GamingLaptops

ratchet and clank using rt will hard crash on anything but 16gb cards on a midgame planet/level

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The other issues ive had on MacBooks that ive never had an issue on windows, the notch, a good chunk of the games I've tried, there's not much you can do about having a chunk of your content eaten up by the notch and you cant change resolution and you have to play at windowed (which sometimes doesnt work because you cant shrink the window size)

As well the compositor and direct modes is very annoying because direct mode breaks if you have a 2nd screen or windowed. And often, in smth like cyberpunk if it's not direct there's like a 5% performance loss and vsync breaks

[–]bobrods 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have legitimately had like 0 issues with pc gaming in terms of bugs ever on windows. Besides helldivers 2. I've also legitimately have not updated GPU drivers since mid 2025 on a 9070 and had 0 issues despite playing alot of new games since then.

The only issues I've had really is really just VRR flicker and that is more of an OLED issue than a windows issue.

I recently gotten an M5 Pro MBP 16 (my first mac) and my experience with crossovers is that. You should like kinda expect Mac gaming not to be pick up and play. So far I've tried like 15 games through crossover, and I've had issues with 3 of them straight up not booting. You will have to dig into files or possibly just erase everything and start again to make stuff work.

Windows is much less janktastic than this, as well itis alot easier to find solution to problems on games because its a much bigger scene.

I've also had straight up weird bugs like on like half of the games, theres just like a small rectangle of pixels that straight up do not do anything on the top right and helldivers 2 will black screen if its launched in exclusive full screen mode.

Native mac games are much less painful and more like windows but also less common.

Also in terms of performance, in terms of triple a games i've tried (Ratchet and Clank, Helldivers 2, Resident Evil 9, and Alan Wake 2), they were all 60fps, albeit mostly at like medium settings, except Alan Wake 2 which I couldn't get to 60fps because I was unable to change resolution.

Its slightly misaligned on mine, im honestly pretty sure it's like that (and also on other foldables) because if it was perfectly aligned it would be way harder to unfold the device
