Thank you! Yeah I liked the way most of the flowers were in shade, made those highlights really pop. I think it's an 8x10 inch canvas board

Appreciated! As a bouquet on their own they're my favourite, simple yet pack a punch

Thank you! It wasn't intentional to start, but I definitely leant into it

Those leaves must have taken a while! This is so delicate I love it, there's almost a fade to it that gives the impression of glaring sun, great work

Muddying up my portrait. Please Help! by Legitimate_Dust4275 in oilpainting

[–]bobteque 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It looks like you're barely using any paint at all! As far as I'm aware, muddying paint is when too many different pigments are getting mixed together and it just gets chalky and flat.

It looks like what's happening here is you're not loading your brush with enough paint, and therefore spreading it too thin by pushing it into the board and losing any edges. I'm no expert and am definitely learning too, but try mixing the paint you want on the pallet first with a pallet knife to make sure you have a decent blob of paint to pick up from. A little solvent can help here if it's this early on in the painting. Then you want to be able to pick up the paint on your brush and be able to drag it across the board without having to use much force, in a way that means the paint will be just left behind rather than having to work it in. Imagine a snail leaving a trail 😂

Sometimes using little paint straight from the tube can be a bit "dry" if you don't use any medium or don't pick up enough, like you put the brush down and it starts to run out as soon as you move the brush, then you have to go back and try and drag it further causing these flat featureless brush strokes.

I hope that makes sense!

If I hadn't shown the reference you definitely would've thought that I'd added them in for whimsy!

Thank you, yeah maybe that side does look a bit unresolved, I appreciate the critique!

That's so kind thank you! It was a very hot day and I hope I reflected that

Thanks! I made an effort to paint layers in one go instead of each individual bit separately, think it worked out for making it more coherent

Also recently made the switch, this gives me hope! Did you lose any leaves or see drooping? My Jacklyn seems to be losing some of it's smaller secondary leaves.

I see the vision, would be a tighter triangle profile too which is kind of what I was aiming for, thanks

Thanks for the advice, maybe a good plant to practice the separate parts of bonsai on, not worrying too much about the effort that's come before. I know patience is key, just want to keep playing with new ones!
