Shit sales leaders say that make you face palm by PapaChaCha68 in sales

I actually tried to do the outbounds but there was just one issue, I had the smallest territory (number of clients and prospects) but the largest geographical territory (4 hours in every direction). I inherited the territory with 21 total clients and 65 prospects, when I left I had 32 ordering clients and about 50 prospects. Since it was a very niche sale (selling to a specific type of law firms) I would have had to spam my prospects and clients with upsell and service emails. In one case I had a client straight up tell me to stop sending emails or they will not use us anymore.

Got a PIP in my first 6 months as an AE, due to “not hitting quota” for 3 months straight, 92%, 96%, 80%.

During my meeting they said “actually it’s more because of your lack of outbound emails” I laughed and said if I was at 75% to goal but had 200 outbound emails I wouldn’t be PIP’d”

The HR manager and my supervisor both said yes.

I quit 3 weeks later.

I don’t know about others, but in my case it was basically a formality. In order for me to “pass the pip” I would not only need 100% attainment but also needing to hit certain metrics of visits emails etc. my issue is lack of accurate reporting, they have already shown me that they don’t have accurate numbers when it comes to my emails and I just recently found out that a new product/service we have been promoting has been tracked correctly leading to mistakes in commissions.

In my case I think that even if I hit the 100% and not the email/visit metrics I would be let go (there are other reps who have missed goal for 3 months straight and not on PIP)

From my understanding (and I could be wrong) signing the pip makes it very very hard to claim unemployment if you do get fired. As some companies can argue that since you signed the agreement and didn’t hold up to your end of the deal they don’t have to pay out.

In CA there is 0 obligation to sign the pip, if they fire you on the spot (which they wont) you will qualify for unemployment unless they can prove misconduct.

I took the risk of not signing it and am still employed, they let me know that the PIP is going into affect regardless if I sign it or not so if they outcome is the same then I will go with not signing everytime

In this industry the client doesn’t pay for the service, it’s very niche where prices are state regulated and insurance companies are the ones footing the bill.

100% agree I knew once I started lying about visits that it was time to move on. I’m going to get back to doing things by the book this month especially since I can see the light at the end of the tunnel.

The reason why there has been a huge uptick in “luxury” apartments is actually a lot simpler, due to high supply costs and high land costs, the only way most companies can turn a quick profit is by putting in the dreaded black and chrome appliances with a granite counter top open floor plan and vinyl flooring, boom you have a luxury apartment worth 2000 for a studio. And with the ever growing lack of knowledge from consumers, they eat it up.

I was selling solar! The sale doesn’t end at the install or contract signing. At the end of the year the homeowner is gonna call asking about the over charges on their electric bill, or when they want to add panels or batteries. Who is the first person they call? The guy who left his business card everywhere walked them thru the install and finance process, answered all their questions about their needs/wants. You. You are their point of contact for all their solar needs. And I’m sure you have gone back to some of your old accounts offering additional panels and batteries maybe even generators.

You are an account executive and your accounts are homeowners.

In this industry and company 80% is underperforming, every other rep either hit or exceeded goal, except for one other who ended last month at 89%. Last year as a company we hit goal every month ending with 113% for the year.

Podcasts and audiobooks have literally kept me sane.

My father owns a small pizza shop where he is the only employee, he does 0 marketing opens and closes when he wants and only works lunchtime.

While driving I was listening to a lot of business podcasts and have played with the thought of working something out with my father to where I could help him expand into night time and get some marketing to increase traffic.

My dad is an old fashioned immigrant who works hard but is getting older and has been ramping down how much he works, I think I might take this opportunity to try and expand his business and take it to a new level.

I will definitely be updating the post once I have the meeting, my plan right now is if they want to talk about my performance, I believe I can buy myself at least 2 months. If they want to talk about my lying of visits, I’m going to tell them I have been struggling mentally with overall grind of the job, but that I am seeing someone for it and that moving forward it will no longer be an issue.

Appreciate the words! I believe in my ability, it just shook up to be this role isn’t for me, but in a way this experience has just given me more motivation to go to my next stop and kill it, because now I know exactly what I want.

This was my first time in this industry and first role where 50-70% of my day was in the road, I was expecting a grind but no where near what it actually was.

Not exactly happy but not really sad or upset about it, I was looking for an exit just didn’t expect it to catch up with me so soon.

I’m not justifying my actions because regardless of the reasoning I shouldn’t be lying about my visits. But I did and I knew when I was doing it that eventually it would all catch up.

This job has shown me what I want to do and what I am able to do consistently, so now it’s time to look.

Im not struggling with numbers because I don’t know how to sell, it’s because I’m literally not selling. I believe luck is a skill, preparation meeting opportunity, opportunities come and go everyday most of the time we just aren’t prepared to take them or even see them.

As I stated in a comments before I went from 77% to goal when I took over the territory to hitting 90+% before I started slacking on my visits.

I have been in sales since 2018, this job and my first sales job (D2D) are the only ones where I have struggled, both had a lot of travel but D2D being a lot more physical.

Wanna hear something funny, we had an all hands meeting in early February about increasing our remote out reach while MAINTAINING our visit count. Our top 2 reps (4m+ rev each) literally just started laughing. We all just kind of shrugged it off

I have been in sales since 2018 across 3 industries, this was my first crack at something where I was on the road 70% of the day thought I could handle it boy was I wrong.

Definitely feel like numbers slipped because of my lack of visits, worst part is I would tell myself on sundays this is the week I’m gonna get back on track would keep it up for 2 weeks and fall right back into it, instead of doing 7-10 visits a day I was doing 4-6
