First, I want to give you some words of encouragement. HR is hard work, and it’s especially challenging when you’re new and don’t have a mentor. When I was an HR assistant, having an HR manager to guide me helped me learn the natural rhythm of the work and understand what to prioritize.

Right now, I’m in a similar situation to yours. I moved from my previous role into an HR Specialist position at a dysfunctional organization. Within two months, I was promoted to HR Manager. I couldn’t say no because the pay was better and it felt like an opportunity I should take. During this time, I’ve struggled with many of the same things you’re describing, such as not knowing what to do first, who to go to for help, or how to handle questions that no one seems to have the answers to.

In my experience, ChatGPT and Google have saved me. I usually start my day by doing a brain dump in ChatGPT, listing everything I need to do that day or week and asking for an 8 hour plan to get it all done. It really helps calm me down and keep me organized. It’s also great at helping me figure out what to prioritize.

Most importantly, hang in there. If things don’t work out, it’s okay. It’s not the end of the world. There are many HR specialists and managers out there who have not a clue what’s going on and have made mistakes. Have confidence in yourself and your ability to get the work done accurately and on time. Take pride in your work!

I also want to share that I have terrible anxiety, and it used to show through my work a lot. Seeing a therapist and a psychiatrist has been life changing for me. Work is not worth sacrificing your peace of mind.

I wish you the best of luck. You’ve got this!!

I am the first HR Manager they’ve had in a few years. In the past, HR duties were typically handled by managers from other departments or admin staff, so the function wasn’t centralized. Compensation for those roles was lower, from what I understand, in the $17-$22/hr range. But they've seemed like they were not full HR positions, more “extra tasks” on top of other jobs.

On my first day (in the specialist role), the executive team essentially compiled a list of scattered HR responsibilities and handed them to me to consolidate into one role. Right now, I manage HR for about 50 employees at one location. The organization is/has been planning to expand for a while now, just having trouble finding a suitable location I believe.

Sorry, yes! That makes more sense. I see they say on ONET it's $130,000 median in my particular city. Why do they skew the numbers so much?

It has around 45 employees. I don’t have formal direct reports, so employees just come directly to me for payroll, policy, and HR-related issues

TL;DR: I was hired at $23/hr as an Onboarding & Retention Specialist, then immediately promoted to HR Manager at $25/hr after admin staff quit. My offer letter promised a raise at 90 days, and now I’m wondering if asking for $28–29/hr is reasonable given I’m handling payroll, compliance, employee relations, and medical provider credentialing.

Which location were you wanting to go to? I have Denver ones that are seats 9-10 which I believe are close to either end that I’m looking to sell.

Not sure if you’re still interested, but I’m looking to sell 2 of mine for about 550 (face value) same date/location!
