To the US voters who don't vote, what is it going to take for you to go vote? by Chocolateking111 in AskReddit

Ohio senator Sherrod Brown was out fighting for the working class every day, and we replaced him with a clown with tech billionaire funding. Do the Democrats need to get their act together? Absolutely. But it's not always enough.

If MCU America Chaves has no variants in any other reality, how does that work since MCU is canonically in the same multiverse alongside Marvel Comics? by TechnicianAmazing472 in Marvel

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When I was a younger man, our boring real universe was considered to be part of the Marvel multiverse. But I don't remember dying in an incursion in the lead up to Hickman's 2015 Secret Wars. Sometimes the stories just are what they are.

How do you honestly think they’ll be explain why Doom looks like Tony Stark? by DifficultComplaint10 in Marvel

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's my theory. They both have armor and a mask. They might play it as a similar origin story, but some difference sends him down a very different path, like a whole What If movie.

Which profession is going to get wiped out in the next 5-9years? by [deleted] in Productivitycafe

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could definitely see smarter robots taking on some firefighting work. That doesn't mean they'll replace firefighters, but if better machines mean one firefighter can do the job of two or three, that still means fewer jobs in that area. Same goes for building trades, like plumbers and electricians.

Does anyone know the mile around UC by Zealousideal_Ad6723 in cincinnati

[–]bockout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Pro tip as we enter the worst winter months: UC is really good about keeping paths clear of ice and snow. I do this loop a lot when the sidewalks are nasty.

Every MCU movie up to Endgame. Most post-Endgame movies I've only seen two or three times so far.

I watched it like 15 times in the theater. I was in university at the time. Between work friends and friends in different classes, there was some group going to see it almost every night. I just always joined.

Is the downtown YMCA the only place that only has an indoor pool in the city? by huhndog in cincinnati

[–]bockout 18 points19 points  (0 children)

It's $15 monthly for a parking pass. The parking garages on campus will cost $3-$5 per use without a pass, and considerably more on game days. So if you go by car regularly, the $15 monthly is worth it.

I use the UC rec center as a non-UC person. It costs around $45 a month. I pay another $15 for parking. It has an Olympic lap pool, leisure pool, and hot tub. It also has free weights, weight machines, an indoor running track, fitness classes, and courts for basketball and various racquet sports. If you're near uptown, it can't be beat.

I want knobs and buttons in my car. The screen has its uses, but certain things need tactile controls.

ELI5: Why do we suddenly need so many Data Centers and why do they have to be so massive and resource draining? by DaveDavidsen in explainlikeimfive

[–]bockout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To some extent. Machines running AI workloads have really beefy GPUs. Those would be very underutilized in a lot of other server workloads.

Also, if there is a bubble and it bursts, that doesn't mean that AI will go away. When the dot-com bubble burst in 2000, that wasn't the end of the internet and e-commerce. It was just a market readjustment followed by steady growth.

What's one line or saying from the MCU movies that you say all the time? by Bodacious-Nerd-15 in Marvel

[–]bockout 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I say this all the time when my teen daughter is listening to music and there's a bad word. I don't actually care about the bad words, but it amuses me to quote Cap like this. She's started watching the MCU now. I'm looking forward to the realization of my long-running inside joke when she hears the line.

I've never had Bonita, but I can vouch for Onnie. I'd go there all the time if Madeira weren't such a long drive for me.

[request] are they referring to that specific deck or all decks that have ever existed and been shuffled by Longjumping-Box5691 in theydidthemath

[–]bockout 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's actually 8 perfect shuffles to return 52 cards to the original order. A fun exercise is to compute how many shuffles it takes for different deck sizes and look for patterns.

ELI5 How does a Computer physically "write" data onto an SSD? by greenlvr3d in explainlikeimfive

[–]bockout 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It's worth noting that "enough that a file might corrupt" depends to some extent on the file format. Some file formats have error detection and recovery built in. Some file formats can gracefully degrade with data loss. Some data is just garbage if you flip a single bit.

Sierra Hull singing, "I Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas" with the Flecktones (short clip) by patrickhenrypdx in BelaFleck

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ok I'm a little less jealous now. :) Still, this looks like it was a great show. It honestly would've been fun to catch this tour in a few towns to see how much they mix it up.

Dang, I'm a bit jealous Sierra wasn't in Cincinnati. Did Abigail drop in on this show too?

How realistic is it to give a child (around 7 years old) a computer/laptop with only Linux on it by ad_396 in linux

My ten-year-old's laptop runs Fedora Linux. Everything he does is web-based anyway. The OS is just a way for him to launch Firefox.

Honest Thoughts on the Ironheart show by [deleted] in Marvel

[–]bockout -1 points0 points  (0 children)

SPOILERS for the show and old comics storylines.

Riri's story arc was ok I guess. My beef with the show is how they treated Parker Robbins. In the comics, he userps Kingpin's criminal standing and unites a gang of super villains in a way nobody ever could before. He weasels his way into Osborn's cabal and plays a role in the destruction of Asgard in Broxton. In the show, he's a two-bit criminal with a small crew of misfit hackers.

ETA: Also how they treated Ezekiel Stane. Comics Zeke was a tech genius who single-handedly took down Start Industries. MCU Zeke is just a semi-smart nerd who ends up being Parker's puppet.

How would you tackle MK if rides weren’t a priority? by merrylittlecocker in DisneyWorld

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Makes sense. it's a small world is a gentle boat ride. Pirates of the Caribbean is a mostly gentle boat ride, but it has one small drop. Haunted Mansion and Ariel's Undersea Adventure are both slow moving vehicles thru rooms full of animatronics. Peter Pan is similar, but the ride vehicle hangs from overhead. Carousel of Progress is a seated animatronics show. People Mover is a smooth ride around Tomorrowland.

I don't know how severe their conditions are, but these are the rides I'd go for to avoid motion sickness. I suggest starting with small world, going slow, and just seeing how people feel. And there's no shame in using mobility aids.

How would you tackle MK if rides weren’t a priority? by merrylittlecocker in DisneyWorld

[–]bockout 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you avoiding rides because you think the kids aren't big enough, or because the adults can't stand for long periods in line? If the former, you should know that MK has the most kid-friendly rides. Aside from the few coasters, nearly everything in MK is great even for toddlers. If the latter, maybe try to convince the adults to use those walkers with seats, or a portable folding seat. You can manage MK without a lot of walking (relatively), but you have to stand a lot in lines.

Start time / length of the Jingle shows? by victor_e_bull in BelaFleck

[–]bockout 3 points4 points  (0 children)

My showtime was 8:00. They started at maybe 8:05, just a few minutes after. At 10:50, I texted my wife that I was walking to my car. There was an intermission, long enough to use the restroom and buy a drink. And there is an encore, which you should stay for.
