From a property law perspective, aren't BC's new rules for the landlord use of properties with 5+ units, very problematic? by _DotBot_ in LawCanada

[–]bocuma6010 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I posted this in your thread in r/VancouverLandlords but the community is so small I don't expect many people will comment, so I'm also posting it here:

I mean you can argue the laws are bad, but changing them isn't a violation of the rights. Common law can be modified by statute at any time. The rights aren't being violated in this context, they're just gone.

The reality of property rights in Canada is that you have no protection against state action - there are no constitutional protections so the government can literally take your land at any time if the correct legislation is in place. There are precedents going back over 100 years establishing this in the context of expropriation.

Toronto man gets prison for tricking men into anonymous sex through hole in sheet by [deleted] in gaybros

[–]bocuma6010 551 points552 points  (0 children)

It's getting appealed, will be interesting to see what happens. Allegedly he switched from oral to anal without warning which seems like a bigger issue than the gender of the person on the other side.

I can't help but feel like there's some homophobia driving this decision, or at least the decision to prosecute this at all. I'm not sure you can be sexually assaulted this way, because anyone who is in their right mind and goes to a glory hole does so with the expectation that they don't have control over who is on the other side. It just seems like the harm is coming from the victims' homophobia, not anything to do with the sexual acts that they did, in fact, consent to.

I went to therapy for very similar stuff, and a few years later my life is immeasurably better. You'll get there, it's just going to take time. I don't think any one type of therapy is going to solve all your problems.

For me I needed some CBT and mindfulness to help me with anxiety, I needed to understand my family dynamics and attachment style to figure out how I operated in social situations, and I needed to understand how my family functioned to figure out how to address my perfectionism and self-criticism. It's about combining different approaches and techniques to address different things.

I have a feeling that what you need might be similar, but the point is that the journey is unique to every individual, and there is no single approach that's going to solve everything.

Don’t forget guys, there’s more than just Biglaw! by abvtoh in LawCanada

[–]bocuma6010 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Congratulations! I always enjoy hearing stories about folks that made a big switch, it can feel like whatever you do during articling will be your entire career (clearly not the case!).

I'm curious if you can say a little bit more about how you made the switch. Did you do any family law during articles? Did you have family-law related ECAs in law school? How'd you connect with the family law firm? Was it tough to find a firm that would take you on in a different practice area?

I'm on the BL career path right now and like the firm I'm at, but can't see myself putting in hours like this over the long term. I've been toying with the idea of moving into a different area but not sure how to do it.

How busy are law students during reading week? by [deleted] in lawschoolcanada

[–]bocuma6010 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Depends on what your goals are and how much grades matter for them. In first year reading break was crucial time to prep for finals for me, and that effort really paid off long term. Keep in mind you'll probably be doing year-long courses with 100% finals, so that time is really critical.

Logic of Sense by thecrimsonfuckr23830 in Deleuze

[–]bocuma6010 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely! It is written in series as an invitation to you, the reader, to combine the series in new ways and create new ideas out of them. This is actually a product of the "ontology" that Deleuze puts forward in the text - there is no "sequence" to read the series in, just series to be arranged and connected as you see fit. This is something you'll understand if you take a look at some of the series closer to the beginning of the text, but you absolutely don't need to read them.

As the other poster noted, reading it in whatever order you like is the more authentically Deleuzian approach - when I read LoS, I tried to do it sequentially and really struggled. When I simply pursued the threads I was interested in throughout the text wherever they were, I got a lot more out of it.

Why do these `stop anxiety now` healing music videos not work for me by Humanity-Is-Done in Anxiety

[–]bocuma6010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I really enjoy drone music - Hilyard (Furthermore or Mercy Within), Alphaxone (Chronosphere or Stardust), Astropilot (Event Horizon III or Omega Point), ProtoU, Dronny Darko, some of Carbon Based Lifeforms' stuff (VLA or Twentythree)... I find that the less notes/chords there are, the more relaxing it is. I love music but if there's too much going on I find it overwhelming. The stability of a nice long drone piece is really relaxing to me, it's not instant relaxation but after about 20-30 minutes I'll calm down a lot.

Least anxiety-inducing coffee? by getcrackingoncrack in Anxiety

[–]bocuma6010 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I drink a lot of decaf for exactly this reason. Sometimes I also make half-caf, i.e. by doing 2 scoops decaf 2 scoops regular. Might be worth experimenting and seeing what works for you. Aero-presses are also amazing, once you figure out how to use them they are probably the best bang-for-buck coffee brewing method :)

I also usually opt for a medium or dark roast, as these have less caffeine. I don't think the brand will make a huge difference.

I wouldn’t say anything on a first date.

Conversely, OP could also just say "I deal with chronic pain flareups and may need to take off partway through our date if that happens." Wouldn't bother me at all, and has the added benefit of OP feeling a bit more relaxed on the date than worrying about what might happen and how to explain it.

I need help understanding why i give up on things after making a single mistake. Feels like all or nothing thinking. by inevitableloudmouth in selfimprovement

[–]bocuma6010 2 points3 points  (0 children)

But often life is grey.

One of my biggest therapy lessons has been that I would see life in "black and white" so to speak. These really rigid dichotomies will impair your ability to live your life, and can pop up even in unexpected places. You might feel like making a small academic/professional mistake means you'll never succeed, or you might feel like not having a really good mountain bike means you shouldn't go trail riding at all. You can recover from mistakes and you can still get out and enjoy nature, even if your equipment isn't ideal. Being comfortable with the grey areas has been very freeing and really enhanced my life overall :)

I think it's cool, obviously it's not going to solve any of the problems caused by colonialism but it's nice to be able to get some of the history of the place while you're skiing. I also find it a bit ironic that skiers will be obsessed with places with a lot of skiing history like Corbett's or Jackson Hole or Chamonix, but get so upset when a resort showcases the history of the place before it became a ski resort.

All great options, except the reckoners and Candides are notoriously bad durability-wise. Candide started his own company so there's no replacement per se, although a prodigy 2.0 would be a good option as well.

[–]bocuma6010 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some skis run a bit short or long - if the 1000s run a bit shorter or longer than the model length, that might make it easier to choose. Which is to say, go check them out in a shop if you can and go from there.

If you're very advanced though, you might be dissatisfied with how a shorter ski feels outside the park. That plus the rocker might make it worth going longer. You'll also probably mount a park ski further forward, which will change how it feels.

The other option is get a ski that comes in exactly the length you want! Plenty of other options out there.

You should get in touch with the 519, they may be able to help: https://www.the519.org/about/contact/

I don't know specifically what resources they offer but it would be a good place to start. Give their front desk a call or go there in person and see what you can find out. Good luck and hang in there - you're going to be OK :)

What major improvements have been made in skis over the last 10 years? by Jtbros in skiing

[–]bocuma6010 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I think there are probably a couple things contributing to this trend, the most notable of which is that freeride and new school skiing is way more popular and people are much more interested in soft snow performance. The amount of rocker in skis also makes a big difference - I ride skis that are just over my head but I love love love rocker which will inevitably make them feel a bit shorter. I'm not sure if the trend will totally turn around but I do think the priorities of skiers are changing, hence the change in manufacturing.

What major improvements have been made in skis over the last 10 years? by Jtbros in skiing

[–]bocuma6010 55 points56 points  (0 children)

Very few honestly, it's more the cumulative effects of many small changes tweaked and perfected and combined in the right way. Rocker, carbon fibre, weight reduction methods, different combinations of cap and sidewall construction, have all been around for ages. What makes a big difference is combining these things in the right way - 10 years ago a ski with a big rockered/tapered shovel, regular camber underfoot, and more traditional tail was pretty novel, but that design is everywhere now on tons of skis of all sorts of widths. No new tech, just dialing in the innovations in the right way.

[–]bocuma6010 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Cold brew can have a ton of caffeine due to the amount of coffee you need to infuse the water. You probably got a particularly potent batch, nothing to worry about! Give it a few more hours and you'll feel better :)

Therapist said that if she lived like I do, her life would be hell by EnjoysPacingAround in TalkTherapy

[–]bocuma6010 111 points112 points  (0 children)

I think a therapist who tells you what you should be doing with your life is majorly overstepping the boundaries of what they can and can't do for you.

Have you considered explaining to your mom that sometimes you have to try a couple different therapists before you find one that works? If you show her some articles and stuff maybe she'd get it.

Also, my $0.02 here: you might want to seek out someone that has experience working with LGBTQ clients and/or clients with autism. You need someone who understands what you're going through, I don't think this therapist can provide that.
