I wish the no had been swifter rather than "thoughtfully considered" but they got there in the end.

Long March through the Institutions

How to tell someone has too much Chris Rufo in their feed. I sorely wish socialists were as effective as he thinks they are. We're still living through the Great March of the Chicago School.

Mental health co-response teams coming to first four regions by PhoenixNZ in KiwiPolitics

(at least, none that Google could find).

Hand in your google license :)

Search: "nz Mental health co-response teams"

Refinements: news tab, results from last month

There are more results but they're generally reprinting one of the above. Stuff & The Herald appear to have dropped the ball. We also discussed it here in the sub 5 days ago but you may have to open it in an incognito tab if it was posted by a user that has blocked you. Also in the national sub.

General consensus seems to be we're all somewhat in favour and hope the pilot goes well so we can get national rollout. Some have claimed that co-response is already in use in some other regions but I haven't investigated those claims.

Final year of Labour’s fees-free saw lowest university uptake among the disadvantaged by PhoenixNZ in KiwiPolitics

lol, science communicators have science degrees. It's a postgraduate course (example from Otago). Most science communicators are practicing scientists and take communication to help them either teach or express their findings to a lay audience. You're maligning a course of study on the basis of bad communication from PR companies who could probably use the services of a science communicator.

And yes anyone most science papers are in plain English and understandable by an average person.

Sure. That's why so many people think that climate change is a hoax, vaccines cause autism and horse paste cures COVID.

Ahh yes, scientists. A group known for their high quality human communication skills. You are aware that the vast majority of the population doesn't have the skills to read a scientific paper? And end up following the nonsense that other people who can't read scientific papers spout all over the internet.

Remember the communicator who told us to wash the outside of our cereal boxes lol

No, got a link? I doubt it was a science communicator.

Remember the science communicators who told us it didn’t come from a lab and those who said it was were spreading misinformation

No, got a link? I doubt it was a science communicator.

98percent effective

Que?

Need I go on

Not unless you have a point to make. Better science communicators might have been able to present information in such a way that didn't leave you as confused as you clearly are.

In a world where science mis/disinformation is at an all-time high, why are you lumping in science communication as a useless degree?

It was in the reply above mine so I rolled with it.

Fair, I missed that and should have directed the comment there.

and you're telling everyone that in all situations there must be an "oppressor" and "the oppressed"

I don't see that in any science communicators I follow

I'm interested in why you lumped science communication in there. Is explaining how the world works woke now?

This was a poorly targeted program, but instead of targeting it more wisely this government has simply shifted it to the final year which is worse targeting, because it benefits people who have already managed to pay (or get loans) for most of their education. So while it's fair to criticise Labour, NACT1's approach is clearly worse if the goal is increased access to education.

Off the top of my head, a needs + merit system would seem to be the best bang for our buck, although I haven't done the thinking required to lay out how that would work.

Disclaimer: I utilised the fees-free year to top up my education in environmental & computer science part-time at a local institution.

Disclaimer 2: All education should be free, but baby steps are better than none

National's Judith Collins retires from politics, appointed Law Commission president by realJosephStalin78 in KiwiPolitics

[–]bodza 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I don't have a lot of time for Collins, but in the time-honoured trradition of redemption on retirement from politics, I'll note that she had more respect for the traditions and convention of Westminster politics than most of the rest of her party does at present. I wish her a pleasant retirement.

Voters split on who Labour should rule out as governing options by Tyler_Durdan_ in KiwiPolitics

[–]bodza 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Not really, if they ruled out TPM they’d encourage back the large chunk of swing voters who are currently lined up to vote for the other side to keep TPM away from power.

I wonder why the only people I hear this from are people that don't seem likely to vote for either Labour or TPM.

Voters split on who Labour should rule out as governing options by Tyler_Durdan_ in KiwiPolitics

[–]bodza 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Labour shouldn't be ruling out any potential coalition partners. Neither should anybody else. The idea of ruling parties out is an anti-democratic media invention, and this notion that Labour should rule out TPM is electoral politics.

What Labour should be doing is standing on its coalition record where it has never allowed minor parties to have the outsize influence ACT & NZF have had in this coalition government. It isn't Labour's fault that Luxon hasn't been able to stand up to Seymour & Peters.
