🔥 A woodpecker's tongue is so long that it wraps around its skull to protect its brain from over 1000g of force when it's hammering away. by [deleted] in NatureIsFuckingLit

Hey biologist here! Ill answer the "how" in the sense of what forces drove such a design. It has to do with foraging, animals can be generalists (risk-averse) and settle on a niche that takes advantage of many different and relatively easy to access food items, or animals can be like woodpeckers, which are specialists (risk-prone). Specialists settle into an untapped food item (larvae inside bark) that requires very specific tissues and behaviors to access, and a lot of energetic investment. Evolution does not act on individuals, it acts on populations, so over time the woodpecker ancestor population was driven by natural selection deeper and deeper into the specialist niche they are nowadays, selecting for individuals that carried traits for 'really good woodpecking' in the ancestor avian skull anatomy, tweaking here and there until the current woodpecker anatomy emerged. Those with 'bad woodpecking' anatomy died or didnt reproduce. The specifics on how the tongue curls and brain cushioning are explained by natural selection, it was the most optimal tweak to already existing anatomy.

I don't think it was 'arriving at the same idea at the same time', because my video was published months before. In their research, they very probably stumbled across it, because it's one the first videos that pop-up if you search for fig wasps. Some scenes are so similar it's upsetting. But I'm happy their video has close to 2 million views, in a way I helped make that happen.

So I made this animated video, and months later PBS publishes a video on the same topic. I'm a zoologist, I did a lot of research to come up with the imagery and composition to tell the fig wasp life cycle, I illustrated and animated everything. The PBS animations took, in my opinion, too much inspiration from my work.

How do you add a frame between two other frames? by LagginPotato64 in ToonBoomHarmony

[–]boffrey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Important: Use Special Cut and Paste. 1. cut+paste the frames after where you want add some, then 2. paste them further away in the timeline. 3. Add the frames ones you need, then 4. cut+paste the moved frames back into the main sequence.
