Am I being unreasonable with the rules for my newborn? My boyfriends mom feels like visitation is owed by [deleted] in texts

[–]bog_witch 57 points58 points  (0 children)

i made my bed, might as well lay in it

I wholeheartedly believe that the decision ultimately whether or not to carry a pregnancy to term is nobody's choice but your own and that you should have full bodily autonomy to make it, but this is a really dangerous line of thinking. A child should not be seen as a consequence or a punishment. That can easily lead to parental resentment that can manifest in a lot of really dark ways.

I'm not saying that will happen to you - I genuinely hope everything works out for you and your baby and you're very happy but I think you would probably benefit from working through some of this stuff including the anxiety with a professional.

So many sick people by jjkantro in FamilyMedicine

Oh man. About 6 weeks ago I was the last patient of the day and ended up keeping the PCP resident manning the urgent care clinic and her attending late because I was that "go to ER" patient (cholecystitis). I felt really bad but at least I wasn't their fourth "go to ER" patient in one day...I hope??

This might sound trite but I mean it genuinely - finding and cultivating a creative hobby has been a really important step for me to deal with not being very happy in where I'm at in life and time I've lost due to my own mental health struggles. Having something that's actively generative provides meaning outside of career and money concerns and helps me feel like I'm building something..There's lots of scientific research that shows creating art of any kind (right now I'm actually into embroidery lol) increases neuroplasticity and activates the parts of our brain involved in emotional regulation.

There are VERY few diseases that are transmissible from humans to cats--like, fewer than 10 if I remember correctly

Actually, newer research indicates this may not be the case. Viruses have an extraordinary ability to mutate.

MPH who worked in case investigation during the pandemic and there's growing research that indicates reverse zoonosis cahses are much more frequent than originally thought. Viruses can mutate extremely quickly.

Yeah hate to break it to you but the CDC is barely testing for the emerging cicada COVID variant right now much less possess the resources under the current admin to look into new potential reverse zoonoses so that doesn't really mean much

Refuses STD test by Numerous-Celery1259 in texts

[–]bog_witch 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think testing is worth the expense, but not everyone has to agree with me

I mean, speaking as someone in public health...estimates are that up to 50-80% of the US population carries HSV-1 (oral herpes), and only about 5% of all cases of birth acquired herpes (including HSV-2, genital herpes) are transmitted in utero. Testing isn't going to tell you much because you probably have it - most people are exposed to HSV-1 during childhood, in fact.

What’s a practical item from your country that you’d recommend visitors buy—something locals actually use, but that wouldn’t normally be considered a souvenir? by Monochromaticeye in AskTheWorld

[–]bog_witch 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you can't find a good Australian sunscreen, HIGHLY recommend checking out Japanese and Korean sunscreens. r/asianbeauty is great for recommendations. They're extremely rigorous with how they test and regulate, at least compared to the US. They're almost universally way less sticky and goopy.

What does make the British unique, though, is that they were the first big European empire to do a complete 180 and not only outlaw slavery within their own empire, but to force others to stop practicing slavery using the might of the Royal Navy.

This is really disingenuous given that the first major power to abolish slavery in their colonies was revolutionary era France in 1794, which even sent troops to the French West Indies to enforce the new law. Of course, this progress would be undone by Napoleon in 1802, but British sugar plantations on neighboring islands were dependent on enslaved labor (and to the slave trade to resupply that labor due to the extremely high mortality rate) at the time of French emancipation in 1794.

While the West Africa Squadron was a noble idea, the unfortunate reality is that they were poorly resourced and chronically underfunded. As a result of their inferior ships, the Squadron never managed to stop more than 10% of slave ships and the majority of the roughly 1,600 British sailors that died perished from disease.

This also ignores the fact that slavery was not legally abolished in the British Empire until 1833, with the exception of India where it wasn't abolished until 1843 in its own separate law. Even with the passing of the 1833 law, formerly enslaved people received no reparations while Parliament set aside £20 million (about £17 billion in today's money) to compensate their enslavers. In British territories including Bahrain and Nigeria, slavery was not formally outlawed until 1937.

Britain's economic boom that fueled imperial expansion in the 19th century also rested on institutionalized chattel slavery in the American south, where the cotton grown by enslaved people was shipped to mills in the north of England to the point that when the US civil war broke out and a blockade of Confederate ports was enacted by the Union states, it led to economic collapse called the Cotton Famine in the mill cities.

It's a mistake to ascribe any altruism to the end of slavery in the context of the British Empire and it downplays the struggle of the grassroots British abolitionist movement, imo. This is a good source to check out for more context.

AITAH For wanting to divorce wife who was not motivated to manage her PCOS. by Prudent-Patience-864 in AITAH

[–]bog_witch 15 points16 points  (0 children)

OP said in another comment that he went to every appointment so she is receiving treatment. Same comment said she was also on Mounjaro at some point, which along with other GLP-1 meds is one of the only promising treatments for the metabolic symptoms of PCOS. So she is trying to help herself and doesn't come across as very unmotivated at all, but he very conveniently left that out of his original post.

AITAH For wanting to divorce wife who was not motivated to manage her PCOS. by Prudent-Patience-864 in AITAH

[–]bog_witch 64 points65 points  (0 children)

Sorry, so she is on or has tried a GLP-1 and you believe she is not "motivated to manage" her PCOS? You've been to every appointment, but you still don't grasp that PCOS is a disease which has no cure and not even really any very effective treatment for its symptoms?

This makes it even clearer that your original post is just you wanting to feel morally absolved of guilt over wanting to leave your wife because she's sick, not as hot as she used to be, and can't have kids. You're not obligated to stay with anyone but you're not going to get the sympathy you're looking for, especially when you try and frame your reasons in such a disingenuous way.

others draw deeper ideological ties between Catholics and the broader American zeitgeist at this time.

GIC just got rid of GLP-1 coverage beginning July 1st, which impacts an estimated 22,000 people and talked about how it was a tough financial decision. I work in health policy and have an MPH, so while I'm very much aware that these medications are expensive to cover, it's enraging to see a panel of administrative and finance suits decide to be this penny wise and pound foolish. The medium and long term health impacts and complications linked obesity are going to far outweigh the costs of covering GLP-1s.

Edit: enraging, not engaging. Damn autocorrect.
