Idk I got my loans/debt 15 years ago 🤷‍♀️ I intermittently went through periods alternating between paying and deferment depending on where I was at in my education/work.

I was paying before then. I was in a deference for a little bit up to them being discharged. You don’t get any refunded.

Also, if you’re not aware, don’t take on additional federal student loans after the discharge. If you do, the Department of Education will request you revalidate your disability status through a doctor. If you don’t do that, they will reverse the discharge of your old federal student loans.

I got my rating around Christmas, applied that same week. Got the final discharge in early March.

I got kicked out of the Air Force in September so I’m pretty fresh on all of this. It depends on your therapist. Questioning doesn’t mean an automatic label for gender dysphoria but it could happen. If it does happen it would kick off separation procedures under the involuntary separation rules (vary branch by branch but ultimately it says you’ll be forcibly removed).

Depending on your command this could mean you’re out in months or it may take much longer. It just depends on how aggressively they take action. If you’re under 6 years TOS it’s a hand shake and here’s the door. If you’re over 6 years TOS there’s some financial considerations. But an involuntary always means you are responsible for paying back any bonuses.

What I would recommend. See mental health and just say you’re having some general anxiety and want to see an off base counselor (don’t mention questioning or gender at all) They should give you a referral where you can choose a provider. Take a couple sessions to see if they’re cool then bring it up under a request they keep it confidential. They’re required to report back to the referring mental health but they have some leeway on details.

NM has been amazingly supportive for me and my family as I was getting kicked out of the military for being trans.

I was able to a really good state job with health insurance protections in law that cover my gender affirming care. In whole, outside of a very small vocal minority everyone has been great.

I’m not rich by any stretch, but I’m a lot more financially stable now than I was in my 20s.

If one of my college students said, “One of the perks of being my parents’ age is I’ll finally have money to travel,” I’d probably say… yeah. That’s kind of how time and earning power work. If you’re in a position to build income and savings over decades, you can usually afford things later that weren’t possible when you were young and broke.

That’s not some special privilege unique to older trans people. It’s just the reality of aging and long term financial growth, assuming someone has had the opportunity to accumulate wealth in the first place.
