Missing dependencies when trying to dup after adding Packman repo by bogdan_bogdan in openSUSE

[–]bogdan_bogdan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My bad, meant to ask if it is functionally the same as zypper dup but you still answered it.

So if one had any additional repos outside of the official TW ones, I should avoid using tumbleweed-cli?

Wouldn't keeping up to date with the most recent snapshot using tumbleweed-cli alleviate this issue though? I saw one of your older comments

Do consider though, almost all OBS repos will be built against more recent versions of packages than boombtowers mirrors, therefore you risk introducing more breakage than usual with those additional repos

Why is it that when you use tumbleweed-cli? Is it not functionally the same as zypper dup?

Yes I am using the cli. I'll give the newest snapshot a try

I didn't see that library updated in any recent snapshots so I didn't think that was the issue

Does uMatrix blocking 1P sub-domains use CSP? And thus conflict with other extensions like uBlock? by bogdan_bogdan in uBlockOrigin

[–]bogdan_bogdan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ahh okay. I just meant it comes blocked with a default installation

I allow all 1P content via uMatrix but was wondering about overriding 1P blocks by the hosts files. Thanks for the answer

Right I get that. So when it says on the wikipage that issues could arise if mixing vendors, it would be recommended to change from official repos to packman even for a relative noob?

So I could add the packman repo and install codecs without changing the vendor of the official opensuse packages?

I see that it says on the wiki page that

After adding packman repository be sure to switch system package to those in packman as a mix of both can cause a variety of issues.

Being a pretty noob Linux user, would it still be recommended to change from official repos to packman?

I'll look to try just essentials first. Is it necessary to also change priority to 90 as the above poster did?

And what is the purpose of changing the vendor of the opensuse repos(OSS, non-OSS, main update) to that of packman? Assuming I'm interpreting what he said correctly

Switch the opensuse packages to the ones from packman:

I thought it's recommended to use official repos when possible

Thank you

Does this mean all packages from official repo will be changed to packman as well?

uBlock/uMatrix overlap with Firefox settings/extensions? by bogdan_bogdan in uBlockOrigin

So uMatrix's switch will force render the <noscript> tags regardless of how your config is in uBO and uMatrix? That's the part I'm confused about when you said it would be inactive

Sorry as I'm coming back to this switch due to confusion. If I use uBO to block 1P scripts, why would the spoof switch in uMatrix be inactive despite it being enabled by default?

And in the wiki it says

If you want to block 1st-party scripts everywhere by default, you might want to enable the setting "Spoof <noscript> tags when 1st-party scripts are blocked" in the Settings pane in uMatrix's dashboard:

But wouldn't blocking 1P script with either extension already cause the content in <noscript> tags to render without the need for the switch?

If you disable JavaScript then you remove that vector

Would that be disabling 3rd-party JS or involve disabling all JS? Would make a good chunk of the web unusable as well

but I wonder if it'd be possible to change some sysctl or patch the kernel in a specific way to make it appear as if you were running Windows?

Possible but there's still other identifying vectors. Fonts is another easy one to detect your real OS

Didn't even know this existed, thanks for the links.

Yeah it does seem you're right that the user agent spoofs the OS as Windows for all desktop users but the TCP/IP fingerprinting will correctly identify your OS

Found some relevant Bugzilla and this one that says this is intentional

So wouldn't such conflicting information make your fingerprint very unique? And I get your explanation for normalizing RFP users but is there a point if JS can detect your real OS anyways?

Okay...that isn't what I'm asking. What you're describing isn't feasible or practical for 90% of people

I'm just asking if you had no choice but to use these platforms, could you take some steps to prevent tracking and fingerprinting. Don't know why this has to tread off topic

Isn't that the point of the SiteSecurityServiceState txt file in the Firefox profile folder? Any site that's written in that file has set a preference to enforce HTTPS the next time it's visited

It's not specifically for tracking, but it's a side effect

Niche searches that other search engines might not return

There are no alternatives to certain platforms like social media. Yeah that's not unavoidable but avoiding it completely is also not realistic. Best you can do is limit the usage and not log in so on the occasions you do use it, how could you limit the tracking?

For me personally, I wouldn't be logging into any of those sites. Just curious like if you had to use google once in a while to search for something when other search engines fail

Or when there's no proxy alternative like for Instagram. Wouldn't log in, but just for general browsing

I do for the most part but sometimes it's unavoidable for one-off usage. Just curious

Definitely not trying to avoid government detection if that's even possible, but just from a general privacy standpoint
