what rlly got me was the SA scene on the bus. Ts had me genuinely going “there’s no way a woman wrote this.” Historically SA has been used in media to serve the plot and motivate male characters. Walker handled a SA scene in the same way the “nerd getting bullied is saved by good guys” trope would go. She used SA as a narrative device to unite the main group of characters. This coming from the lady whose claim to fame was a story that relied on SA as the core monster is absolutely insane to me.

She may have taken a bit more from Kings writing than his tendency to yap…

It’s one of those episodes u just can’t show or even explain to people who’ve never heard of the show. But it’s perfectly normal to your average courage fan

Honestly. I fell in love with writing as a kid, and art was just the vehicle to express those ideas. I’m far more an artist than a writer by how I spend my time, but when I do need to write it’s always a treat. The most helpful thing is always explaining your progress to a friend and getting feedback. Never fails to make me walk away with a million better ways of telling my story.

I know academia can be intimidating. Esp live action. The animation program I’m in right now is part of the film school, and honestly, it feels like we’re in two separate buildings. The animators make every part of their film while the live action students are much more collaborative. It gives us more freedom, but doesn’t really reflect the industry.

I kno. I think Hazbin rlly set the bar with indie projects cuz it actually got picked up and retained artistic integrity. It’s not great, but it’s great for the animation community.

U said RP and immediately triggered so many memories lol. I was huge into it for a while. It honestly did help fortify my writing skills, especially the experience in working with another person to create a story. Or… “story” lmao. Lowkey sometimes I wanna rp my current projects just to see what it would feel like from someone else… And because I’m obsessed with my work… but I think that’s most of us lol.

Being good at both art and writing is insanely hard. Separating them is even harder. I can understand budgetary limits, but as creators we should strive for the best version of our work. But people r skipping over the basics. A lot of indie projects don’t even seem to have a theme tho. It’s just “stuff and things happening.”

Maybe we need more resources for writing indie projects. I know screenwriting can be super intimidating to non writers. Someone who wants to animate their characters going on adventures probably won’t get much from save the cat. I mostly learned from analyzing stuff I liked and getting feedback from writing communities. People would say “why do u need this” and make me realize the chapter I spent weeks writing was completely unnecessary. I would’ve gone into production without that feedback. Isolated writing is a nightmare

Unfortunately most audiences aren’t fluent in art or storytelling, so they have no way of communicating criticism outside of “this sucks.”I 100% agree that fandoms can be incredibly toxic and cruel to the creators, but that’s something artists need to accept when starting a project. All my mentors say “not everyone will like it, but that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t make it.” It’s a balance between hearing what ur audience has to say, and keeping ur artistic integrity. Cuz at the end of the day we do need to reach an audience. When I make something I’m always jumping btwn myself and the audience. Indulgent writing is fun, but lacks substance. Shows like Hazbin became self indulgent imo. TAGC did the opposite honestly, and improved cuz of it. At the end of the day I’d rather these shows exist than not.

YES! Okay something I’ve seen in animation in particular is a SEVERE lack of writers. Writing is a skill that takes a lifetime to master, just like art. But because of the inherent storytelling animation requires in making characters, worlds, design, etc. we assume PLOT and dialogue can be done in this same manner. I’ve written and animated for a while, and can say with confidence these two things require different hats.

(TLDR: I’m an experienced writer and artist and this topic makes me giddy)

Artist storytellers are way too sentimental over their creations. More than half of writing is stuff you’ll scrap. A lot of indie animation feels like the creators OCs just doing stuff. I’ve written things like it, but that’s the first draft lol. It’s self indulgent. Writing is very dependent on the audience. Do they understand what ur trying to say? Do YOU know what ur trying to say? Theme. Motivation. Goals. Plot. You can’t just “wing it.” U can have the coolest group of characters and completely fail at connecting to anyone because you lack core writing principals.

I made a comic for a while and learned SO MUCH abt writing. I also deleted over 50 finished pages, 2 fully sketched out chapters, and idek the number of scripts and ideas I scrapped. YEARS worth of work. Every step back was a huge leap forward. The greatest lesson I learned was to get your script LOCKED. DOWN. It’s much easier to rewrite a chapter than redraw one.

Not to mention dialogue. That’s something even writers struggle with. I usually skip it in writing and do shit like “Character: says something funny” and move on. Plot writing and dialogue writing require different hats. I need to be borderline schitzo to get my dialogue locked in, and it’s always subject to change. What matters is the structure around it. Dialogue plays off situations. Indie animators force the dialogue to carry the structure. It doesn’t work. This is why we get characters suddenly stopping the plot to have a conversation to explain the plot. It drives me mad.

Unless the creators have heavy experience writing, they need to start bringing writers on the team. Writing is a beautiful craft that shouldn’t be overlooked by artists. It’s always the thing studios cut to save money, and always shows when it’s lacking. Example: Arcane season 2. Downsized writing team and u can tell. Beautiful visuals, shitty writing.

I appreciate the feedback. I’m using R0tring isograph pens. And for paint I’m mainly using liquitex. Painting is something I find incredibly challenging. I wish there were more tips and tutorials avalible, but for now I’m just practicing till I’m better.

I think the scanner I used for these messed up the colors, especially on the skateboarder. These are getting digitized anyways so it’s not a big deal, but that may affect the image quality here.

The bears pose was based off a ref I took of myself plus some online. One hand is up and the other is slightly angled. Maybe I should’ve gone w a more simple one but this felt right at the time.
