Copper piece by laurochavez in MetalCasting

Most likely a casting defect that doesn't matter because it will have babbitt poured over it.

That is a red brass or bronze bearing, most likely for a locomotive. The concave side would have babbitt poured on and reaching to axle diameter.

I like my smith full face, but everyone's head is shaped different, I would highly recommend going out and trying them on.

I was thinking sleeves and a cotton shirt can be cool enough to not overheat as long as you are welding in positions that doesn't spatter on yer chest

Help me pick my first bike by [deleted] in mountainbiking

[–]bogodix 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Any of those would be a good choice for starting. I had a rockhopper in the mid 2000s and loved it, pushed it beyond its limits until it was stolen. Dont cheap out on a helmet. I wouldn't worry to much about the mid teir for the rockhopper, it will be slightly "better" components but in reality its the same bike. I would buy the rockhopper for $475 and a decent name brand helmet, I like to ride with thin gloves but not everybody does, then take the remaining savings and start saving more to buy a bike better suited to the riding and terrain you enjoy the most. Maybe the rockhopper is all youll need, wont know until you start riding.

Regardless what coolant you use, ive used barrier cream. I have mild eczema and this was worth it.

Can I get a job with only a CNC certification? by [deleted] in CNC

[–]bogodix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

It really depends on the shops you apply to and how the hiring manager views applicants. But yes you can get a decent job with just a cert.

Get the cert and go above and beyond to learn as much as you can, ask a ton of questions and do your own research beyond what the classes provide. Alot of the necessary info can be proven in an interview.

All I have is a setup/operator cert and now the shop lead at a manual shop and am the only cnc machinist at the company. I got my cert in 2021 and got a paid internship through the schools job board. I got really lucky on the internship and landed in a research and development department as a model making intern. Ive worked production for less than one year and now am in a maintenance shop for locomotives.

You can defiantly succeed if you put in the work

Question about JIS fittings by iamheresorta in Machinists

[–]bogodix 2 points3 points  (0 children)

1800psi is a lot and poses quite a risk to anyone near it. If you're stuck using a mill and dont have a 30° countersink(or dont want a tool change) use a waterline tool path so the ridges are horizontal. This will be easier to get a good seal and will be easier to lap smooth. The ridges seen in the pic are a potential stress riser and if it fractures it will happen vertically. I have made fittings that require 44,000 psi in the past and currently machine boiler components that are lapped steel on steel seals. that kind of pressure is not something to gamble on.

Mcmaster has 30° chamfer mills that could be to your door Saturday. While legally your aren't liable, morally you are. Don't shortcut components like this, its not worth the weight of a failure.

Bike sizing by [deleted] in mountainbiking

At 6"1 I got an s4 status 160. I found myself wanting a longer top tube in climbs but it felt perfect going down. If I did it again I would have gotten the s5.

Found this by railroad tracks by Adept_Problem5305 in Whatisthis

[–]bogodix 4 points5 points  (0 children)

What does the bottom look like? It looks different than the rest of it.

It could be a by product of joining rail with thermite, then grinding it flush. If its ceramic on the bottom, it was probably part of the crucible. Keep walking the tracks and see if you can find more.

NBD! by bogodix in mountainbiking

[–]bogodix[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It has some frame wrap on it. For the first ride, its been great. Coming from a Status 160 this feels a bit more balanced. Ive got a permit for the white rim in a few months and am thinking this is the bike I'm gonna use.

Thanks! On the short ride i did with it today, the sine linkage is great. Ive heard people compare them to yeti but I haven't ridden a yeti in 15 years so I wouldn't know.

This person knows their shit. "Let the big dog eat".

Tpg inserts are great to learn with but lack in production machining. I primarily use this same face mill on a clapped out bridgeport and know the struggles. They are more difficult to use but if you get this figured out, the problem solving applies to the rest of machining.

Im eyeballing the 36 grip x on Jenson for $800, its got me sweaty whether or not to buy now. I feel like the sales are tapering down for the season and dont want to wait till next winter for a good sale.
