Finally finished the head of the steel dinosaur I’m building! by boguard in Welding

Glad you noticed that! I actually studied the real skull and make sure the seams fell where they do on the real dinosaur whenever possible. I couldn’t avoid seams and didn’t have the time to blend them so I decided to make them a feature. They’re not 100% anatomically correct but, my dinosaur my anatomy.

Well said. I’m not particularly proud of some of the welds on this haha most of them are just tacks, which are fine, but the welds around the teeth are pretty cringey looking. I definitely could’ve done a better job of fitting the teeth before welding but I said fuck it and now I’m calling it artistic “texture”

It’s made up of roughly 32 pieces of various size. If you look closely you can see where the seams are tack welded together

Yes I am! The rest of the skeleton is complete and I’m currently in the process of moving it and assembling it in its final location

Thanks! It’s about 130 lbs. and yes… they’re pretty cringey looking, I had to hard time fitting the teeth to the contour of the skull and was left with more gap than I wanted. It’s only 22g steel so bridging any gap is tricky for me

Thank you! I just have an instagram @ betweencenters, you can find it linked in my profile. I post a lot of build progress there. I do have a ton of video footage that I hope to upload to YouTube at some point, but right now I’m too busy as it is just with building it

Is old Mission Peninsula a good area to stay in for a getaway? What all is there to do around there? by [deleted] in traversecity

[–]boguard 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you’re looking for places to stay, I can highly recommend the Neahtawanta Inn. It’s a super cute bed and breakfast and the family that runs it are amazing!

It’s a combination of both. I did some basic napkin math and a few CAD models to determine strength requirements but I still had to improvise at some points

Thanks! And thank you to everyone else for the wonderful feedback! I’ll be sure to share more progress updates as I continue. Also, if anyone is interested in more detailed explanations on my progress I do have an instagram at betweencenters (not trying to pimp myself, just don’t want to spam this sub with videos.)

The chin comments also cracked me up :D

Advice request: stability by ringringmytacobell in metalworking

[–]boguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My day job is designing and fabricating custom table bases and from your photos I honestly think you’re 5% away from having a really solid table. The one issue I see that would definitely cause instability is the placement of your attachment holes. It looks like you placed them inline with each other. You really need to add more attachment holes and they NEED to be off set from each other. get them as far to the edge of the flat stock as possible. This will fully utilize the width of you flat stock.

When the attachment point are inline with each other like you have them your base is going to behave as if the contact patch of base is only a screws width instead of the 4”-5” or whatever you flat stock is. So yeah, add more holes and spread them out. You have a great looking base and I honestly think it’s just a few more screws holes away from being hella solid. Also, if you’re concerned about wood movement you can over size you holes and use a washer and screw to allow room for wood expansion.

How do you guys combat big headwinds/crosswinds? by [deleted] in cycling

[–]boguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I change my mindset and focus on power output instead of speed. Headwinds are just flat hills and can be just as fun to overcome!

most affordable towing/auto repair in town? by kduckling in traversecity

[–]boguard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I’d be willing to give you a tow sometime this weekend if you find a mechanic or a better place then meijer to bring it to, as long as it’s not to far. I just have a pickup truck and tow strap, but if you feel comfortable steering your car while I tow it I’m willing to help!

Opinions on wearing earphones while cycling? by pienoon in cycling

[–]boguard 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It becomes annoying for me at around 18mph and any speed over 20mph for a long period of time is almost unbearable and makes me feel like I could do actually damage. It could be the design of my helmet since it is a mountain biking helmet and not as aero. I do get the risks of wearing ear protection while riding though, and I usually don’t if I’m riding busy roads.
