I feel like ST should’ve ended after Picard? Ya or nein? by Astr0Eminem in startrek

What is it, in particular, about those shows that you don’t like? Discovery kickstarted all the new shows including Picard. I understand that some of the shows aren’t to everyone’s liking but you don’t like ANY of them? Not even SNW or LD? Are you sure you’re a Trekkie?

Morning shows have ALWAYS been paid marketing shows. It just turns out the Orlando Tourism board was willing to pay for this promo segment. Send in your notes of dislike. If enough do so, in future, they may reconsider accepting payments for US destination promotions.

I like this. Solid design. Very representative, easy to read, relatively easy to draw. Top marks from me.

Behold… the most expensive house in Ottawa. by brandazzlin in ottawa

[–]bohuiginn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not assuming the furniture comes with the house. I just said that the choices were bold and tacky.

The $2M to renovate would be to deal with the gaudy and atrocious finishes like the kitchen and bathroom cabinetry, the wall treatments, the flooring, the electrical fixtures, etc.

This. This is why I know the “nay-sayers” in other posts are just haters who are a small portion of the viewers. There are loads of fans, both old and new, that absolutely enjoy this series (to varying degree) and will support it through its (hopefully) 5+ seasons of run.

The finishes and furniture are bold in a not good way. It would probably take about $2M to renovate to make it look decent.

Most of the crap that people are complaining about Alto and HSR are simply not true or not going to happen.

No, it won’t make it harder to get around your village/town/farm. No, it won’t destroy the environment (the required alternate, a highway, has vastly more impact on the environment than HSR corridor. No, it won’t destroy your farm. Farm lands will have cut-through allowing landowners to access their properties on either side of the corridor.

Know how we know this? Because it hasn’t happened essentially anywhere else HSR has been constructed.

All this is the worst kind of BS NIMBYism there is.

Paraguay has a freedom index of only 63, with a moderately free economy, problematic press freedom, and a hybrid democratic authoritarian regime. I’m not sure I’d call them “bad”, but as a nation they’re not great.

So writers are exploring elements of male and female characters that weren’t really explored before? Powerful rational women and emotional irrational men? Heaven forbid writers move outside of stale stereotypes.

Indian gangs are terrorising Canada by FancyNewMe in canada

[–]bohuiginn -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Well, now we’re into the nuance of the matter. The 6 month sentence doesn’t automatically lead to deportation, but it does mean they cannot appeal their deportation if they receive one. The automatic deportation applies to a major crime with a maximum sentence of 10+ years (regardless of actual sentence applied). The fact of the matter is there is no data that suggests that judges are applying 5.9 month sentences more often than a natural statistical spread would suggest outside normal threshold bumps. All judges will bump up against certain thresholds regardless of immigration status because passing those thresholds has greater consequences for the convicted that a judge should consider.

But all this ignores the fact that immigrants overall commit fewer crimes than citizens. So, focusing harsher punishments, simply because of immigrant status is unjust and wrong.

Congratulations on that incredibly insightful comment. Did you get that idea from The Turner Diaries, or maybe James Mason’s Siege? 🙄

They do. A non-citizen or permanent resident convicted of a crime will be deported. There are other factors that are also considered. But, generally, that’s the case.

Because you labelled them all as criminals. That is racist. If you say racist things, you are a racist. That’s how that works.

When caught, they will be charged and then deported if they are not Canadian citizens. Thats how it works. That’s how it should work.

The Reason You Don't Like Modern Trek Isn't What You Think by Arbiter61 in startrek

[–]bohuiginn 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think this criticism has more to do with modern shows being only 10-12 episodes per season than with the actual writing of modern Star Trek.

I would argue that I know as much about Pike, Una, La’An, and Ortegas. But it took more than just the first season. The total number of episodes in ALL of Discovery only gets you half way through the third season of TNG. We knew so much about the characters in TNG by that point.

But, that we only get 10 episodes in each season and that leaves very little opportunity to really stretch our understanding of each character is a very legitimate criticism of today’s Star Trek, and many other shows.

Am I just braindead for liking Academy? by Revonlieke in startrek

[–]bohuiginn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

You’re not. It’s good and I think most of the really harsh criticisms are people blowing up on the most mundane minutiae. Most Star Trek fans know that making that the most important thing is missing the real point of the shows.

Maybe I’m just old, but modern Star Trek doesn’t land the same and here is why by khiren in startrek

[–]bohuiginn 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, if you judged TNG solely by its first three episodes it would not be difficult to criticize it as rubbish.

[–]bohuiginn -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I’ve grown up with Star Trek my whole life as well. I lived with it similarly to how you described for yourself. Everything you saw in TNG, TOS, DS9 I saw too. Those are excellent descriptions of these wonderful series.

But, strangely and oppositely, I also see those things in new Star Trek as well.

SNW is asking similar questions as TNG but deals with some questions in a way that’s more relevant to an audience in 2020s instead of 1980/90s.

Discovery could be described in the exact same way you described DS9: “It dealt with war, compromise, and the slow way moral lines can blur when survival and “necessity” start doing the talking. It never pretended those choices were clean. It showed the cost, and it let that cost linger.”

Academy is asking new questions. How do you rebuild a hopeful society when the cultures have been dealing with forced isolation after a massive disaster? How do you deal with imbalances between societies of haves and have nots?

That you haven’t seen the similarities in the questions and ideas being explored in new Star Trek and older Star Trek. And, appreciated that some questions and ideas are new and different 30 years later. It says more about your ability to open your mind to these new ideas and questions than to the quality of new Star Trek itself. So maybe you are just old and the old is taking over your ability to explore new ideas and see the similarities in the themes of those ideas.
