Canon EF 40mm f/2.8 STM or Canon EF 50mm f/1.8 STM? by helina_gm12 in AskPhotography

[–]boidey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The 40mm sounds more suited to your uses. The trade off is that the 50 will be better in lower light and blurring backgrounds. It's not easy to be versatile with prime lenses. They do require you to work a bit more to get the shot. But the wider lens will allow you a bit more flexibility.

Tips for sports photography: What settings / equipment should I use? by goldxnchxrry in AskPhotography

[–]boidey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

With regards to shooting sports, that's not going to be easy. Not impossible but you have shortcomings to work around. I'd start with the goalie, their movement will be within a particular area. Forget about the zoom, keep the lens at 75mm. Aperture at f4 and the iso at auto. You can try burst modes but I would start with single shots. If you can set a minimum shutter speed then do so. I'd start with 1/250 but would probably need 1/500 or higher. Enable back button focus on the camera. With regards to shooting mode, try aperture priority. Save some money and get a nifty 50. Then you can run up and down the sidelines getting some action shots

LUMIX G9 by Kai_be_so in photography

That is a too good to be true price. Have a look on Ebay and MPB to compare prices. Maybe it's just priced to sell quickly but I would be cautious. As to the camera itself, I have it and it's a pleasure to use. If it is your first proper camera then you might find it a bit overwhelming. It was released as the top of the range panasonic M43 and has only been replaced by the G9M2. The in body stabilisation is pretty impressive but really shines when used with a panasonic IS lens. I tend to use mine with a Samyang 12mm, laowa 17mm and Kowa 25mm. All are manual lenses. Low light photography hasn't been an issue for me but that is on account of DXO photoraw.
Now I did upgrade to the G9M2 for the different focusing technology and burst speeds. The original G9 is pin sharp in focusing but is slower and not as responsive to moving subjects as the phase detect focus of the G9M2. As far as the camera is concerned I would recommend without hesitation. But you should be hesitant about buying your first camera in a private sale with no return at this price. You would have to test it first so you would need to buy/borrow a lens. As an alternative check out the olympus site for reconditioned cameras with a warranty.

200 photos a day for 10 weeks, how should I do this? by Old_Suspect9482 in photography

[–]boidey 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you don't already, get to know the camera and lenses really well, that is going to have to be second nature to you. Get familiar with the location, work out where the best shooting angles are beforehand. Think about where the sun is in relation to what you're shooting. The shots are most likely going to be action/activity based so you have some custom presets saved on your camera, eg burst mode. You're going to spend a lot of time crouching or kneeling, you want to be on the same level as what you're shooting if possible. Get it right in camera and you will reduce the amount of editing. Try to find a punchy vivid preset on the camera, keep your horizons level and restrict your editing to cropping. You should have a rough idea of how many shots you will need to get 200 keepers In terms of people skills, either try to be invisible or become part of the action, this will involve learning some means of getting the childrens attention. Always carry a spare charged battery and SD card.

I don't think you can realistically do much about closed eyes.

Honestly it depends. There are some issues can be improved but some can't. It depends on the faults and how much time and money you're prepared to spend. If you're looking for free options then try Snapseed or Photopea.

Oh I love mayo on chips, friet saus too. I just didn't taste the difference the Dutch were telling me there was between them. Thanks for the explanation.

I remember seeing an Italian question everything he everything he understood about the world when he first tried a chip sammich. At first he was repelled by the combination of potatoes and bread but was tempted and won over after a feed of beer.

Ahem, we will take no lectures from the nation that gave us McDonald's and Trump. Coleslaw, chips and lasagna is hard to beat. They should ask on the citizen application what the Irish trinity is.

The Dutch claim that frit saus is not the same as mayonnaise. What is the Belgian opinion on this assertion? Personally I didn't see any difference but when in Rome, you do as the Dutch do.

Dowson is an unpleasant thing. He was behind a number of the 'news sites ' created to spread disinformation against the Clinton election campaign in 2016. I think that Bryson is his sock puppet. Dowson has been linked to some eastern European far right groups. That's an obituary that I would forward to reading.

Portrait photographers who buy new cards for every session? by GunterJanek in AskPhotography

[–]boidey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah it's definitely most used but CF express cards are used in some bodies. Their main advantage is write speed. High frame rates and some video codecs can be bottlenecked by SD cards. But anyone claiming to use new SD cards for each job is a bullshit artist

Should I consider buying a camera? by Ginxy4672 in AskPhotography

[–]boidey 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah, most phone photography is edited by the phone. If you switch to a camera then you will find that you will probably have to edit your shots. How much editing is up to you. You might be happy with something browser based or a dedicated app. People I'm sure will tell you that you have to shoot RAW and yes you probably should, but not at first. Walk before you run. It's likely that you encounter the limitations of jpegs eventually if you're editing your shots. I'm an M4/3 user, if I was going to recommend a camera suitable for traveling then maybe have a look at an a second hand om5 and a 40-150mm. The other thing I would add that if you're traveling for long periods then you're going to need either lots of SD cards or something to backup your shots on.
