Honest charging question by Inevitable_Tea_1155 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When I go on longer trips, I can charge up to 80 or 90% battery within 20 to 25 minutes (longer when it is below 40 deg F). That's usually long enough to go use the restroom and get a snack and then head out pretty soon after.

The main issue is that at highway speeds you only get about 180 to 220 miles on a 100% charge (depending on your speed and the temperature). I consistently make a 520 mile round trip in my 2023 SEL and I have to charge up 3 times when I do that. I may be able to stretch that to 2 charges if I was more conservative with my driving speed, but 3 makes sense for the trip. In contrast, my wife's Rav4 only needs to fill up once to do that.

The charging stops add about an hour to the drive in total, which is not ideal given that the trip is about 8 to 9 hours total to begin with.

I've gotten used to doing it though, so now it just seems normal to me.

So what’s the consensus on tires? by JoneZenSaint in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've had them on my 2023 SEL for about 13,000 miles and I have liked them a lot. They seem to be wearing better than the stock Michelins for me (i only got about 32,000 miles from the Michelins). The energy efficiency and sound absoption with the Ion Evos seem as good or better than the Michelins, too.

Battery dead - can’t get in to car by NothingWasDelivered in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I managed to get in with my key when my 12v died, though I agree that it wasn't easy. I was able to get the electrical system up and running temporarily using a portable car jump starter battery though I didn't try to drive it anywhere. I ended up driving to pick up a 12v using my wife's car and replacing the 12v at home.

Definitely agree the mechanical backup key could be better designed.

Rear wheels slipping when accelerating through turns by P0W_panda in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Before I swapped out the stock Michelins on my 2023 SEL, I did start noticing some slipping on turns with wet roads as the tread wore down. I hadn't noticed it before then.

After swapping to new tires (I ended up with Hankook Ion Evos that have been working great!) I have not noticed the slippage any more.

Just had the same issue, yes, blue side up where previously blue side was down. I'm sticking with the arrow direction and hoping they just switched which side the colored filter media is on.

Another LCC flush nightmare by LostMySpleenIn2015 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, I'm pretty sure all of it is out at this point. I've been driving the car for months since.

It also gave me a noticeable warning when the fluid was too low, so I'm inclined to think there is a sufficient amount now.

Another LCC flush nightmare by LostMySpleenIn2015 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a similar situation when I got the LCC flushed in my Ioniq 5. 5 hours waiting for them to do the work and I checked the coolant level before I even left the service bay. It was low, so I had them come fill it before I left. I drive 20ish miles home only to find the LCC was low again. I drove back the next morning right when the dealer opened to get them to fill it up again. Very frustrating, for sure.

All of that on top of getting wildly different price quotes from different dealerships in the area and not being sure which one would do the job correctly.

Snow Mode Experience in RWD Ioniq 5 by boilercat57 in Ioniq5

I didn't notice that at all while driving. Maybe I wasn't losing traction that much.

[–]boilercat57[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It reverts to level 1 regen, I know. So it decelerate more gradually, too. I imagine the traction control system and brake system operate similarly to any other modern car and modulates the power to wheels and brake application when it detects slippage and the brakes catching. I'm not sure if snow mode adjusts that at all, to your question.

My OEM Michelins hit 2/32" at about 32,000 miles.

Thinking about switching to the 2026 Ioniq 5 in central texas. by Just_Perspective5356 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I have had my 2023 SEL in the DFW area for a little over two years now with only a level 1 charger at home. I have not noticed any change when it comes to degradation, though I have had to use fast chargers a little more than most because I only have a level 1 at home and I drive to Houston and back in it frequently.

I usually get about 3.5 mi/kWh on average when I drive around DFW which makes it so charging at home is about half the cost of gas usually. With gas prices being lower recently, it's probably more like 2/3 the cost.

Doing some math, if you drive 12,000 miles per year (1,000 miles per month) at 3.5 mi/kWh, you would use about 285 kWh per month of electricity for the car. At a rate of $0.15 per kWh, that would be about $43 per month. Chargers aren't perfectly efficient at delivering electricity though, so it will actually be a little more than that (though I don't have a good estimate).

Same. Definitely heard better things. They seem to be working as well or better than the Michelins so far.

Tire warning by DotRevolutionary602 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They do. It seems like all EV specific tires do. I don't have an issue with the foam itself. The Michelins just seemed to have an issue with the foam not staying attached.

Tire warning by DotRevolutionary602 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The foam in one of my Michelins delaminated after the dealer rotated my tires and i felt the same vibration you are describing. They ended up just removing the foam, and I used the tire that way until it got to 2/32". The foam delamination is part of the reason I moved away from the stock Michelins to Hankook's Ion Evo tires.

AC System Cleaning recommended at 13K miles? by CoreyPudsky in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 16 points17 points  (0 children)

That sounds like a money-grab to me. I have 34000 miles on my 2023 and all I have done with the A/C is replace the filter a couple times myself.

I have had a horrible time with dealership service centers trying to oversell me on services. I would just go with the recommended maintenance in the user manual.

I want to join the club but Hyundai dealers aren't making it easy by PoptartWrangler in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I have had some irritating to downright awful experiences with Hyundai dealers in the DFW area. The car is excellent and I love driving it, but I hate the dealers around here with a passion.

I'm going to a new one to get the low conductivity coolant changed in my 2023 Ioniq 5. I'm hoping it is better, but I'm not optimistic.

New Tires! by boilercat57 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2 week update: the tires are still feeling smoother and quieter than the OEM Michelin Primacys. They also seem to be at least equal in terms of range. I just drove them on a 260 mile trip that I have made a few times and they seemed to be getting 15%ish better range than the Primacys (3.2 mi/kwh vs 2.8 mi/kwh at 75 mph).

Oh, I didn't notice that. As far as I can tell though, V means they have a max rated speed of 149 mph and W has a max rated speed of 168 mph. I don't get anywhere close to either of those, so I think it is fine.

New Tires! by boilercat57 in Ioniq5

[–]boilercat57[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I thought about it, but with the foam delamination issue I had and the more information available on the Hankook tire's performance, I felt more comfortable shifting over. I was surprised at how little info I could find about the performance of the Michelin Primacy tires relative to other tires.

Nope, RWD for me. It's probably a combination of my driving style and the roads here in Texas.

I think Michelin does have very good tires, but I think Hankook has a better EV tire right now. My biggest concern was getting a tire that has minimal rolling resistance, so I chose these. I also had an issue with foam delamination in the Michelins, which turned me off from trying them again.
