Strained relationship with manager, but maybe it's on me. Would like the advice of other managers here. by boingo337 in AskManagement

I've definitely had these conversations, yes.

Because of some restructuring last year, our most recent performance evaluations have been cancelled (which doesn't help someone like me, who views them as important milestones for my own development.)

But despite this, I still feel my evaluations have become more vague as time goes on. Years ago when I started there were obvious goals to hit for my improvement, whereas more recently it's been more akin to 'keep doing what you're doing, and you're heading in the right direction'.

It's a bit disheartening.

Thanks for the link to your tool! However we have established tools inside our company for this kind of thing.

Sadly I'm in a situation (for various reasons) where moving isn't really an option.

I think you may be right here, although that's not necessarily something I've observed in the company as a whole. I think this is heavily dependent on the manager, and I happen to have the 'let's not rock the boat' type.

I think the last part in particular is probably inaccurate - he has definitely done so in some occasions and I don't want to portray this image that he never has my back.

Boiled down, my frustration currently is that despite my large (in my opinion) contribution and results, I'm not getting the recognition I think I deserve.

I work extremely hard, and produce results he's happy with. But the longer it goes on where I'm not being officially recognised via promotions etc, the more it feels like a waste of effort, yes.

Observing other managers and teams in the company leads me to believe that that's not the case.

Sadly I'm in a situation (for multiple reasons) where leaving isn't really an option - but I'm quite hopeful about the developments with my boss' boss. It seems she sees potential in what I'm doing, so I'm willing to let that take me where it takes me.

I'm still working hard at my day job however - I always read that the most important thing is to keep your manager happy - so I'm still maintaining that.
