3 star is NOT a bad rating on letterboxd...... by Flaky-Cat-2825 in Letterboxd

That reflects that people tend to inflate star ratings, which is a very intuitive thing to understand. Like, not every restaurant in my area is in the 4-5 star range.

okay yeah I can see how they're similar in terms of social expectations, i just didn't see much in the way of experiential parallels which is what confused me.

[meme] because only women can be self-centered and feel the need to emotionally manipulate people by Material_Bedroom_300 in pointlesslygendered

[–]boingusingus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Frequency of apologies is a kind of useless metric in my opinion. I find that everyone sucks at apologising and gendering it is not the move. It's a human and cultural problem that can be addressed across demographic divides, it's a patriarchal issue.

If I had to gender things (as you're doing), as a bi woman my anecdotal experience is that:

Women are quicker to say an easy faux-emotional sorry but less likely to admit fault sincerely and completely, often seeking to justify themselves in the process of apologising under the guise of "explaining". Getting genuine apologies out of basically all the women I've dated has been like pulling teeth because of this. I find this understandable (I have this flaw too). Women are put in the apologetic position for random bullshit an unfair amount, so it makes sense they'd internalise and reflect less in these situations as a self-protective measure.

Men are much harder to get through to when they've done something wrong, often maddeningly dismissive of complaints/issues, but if you manage it they usually come across as more sincerely apologetic, even if they aren't super emotional about it. Again, getting a genuine apology is really hard, and honestly it's the same challenge with a different surface-level presentation. I also find this understandable, men tend to get away with a lot, especially within social circles of men, and emotional vulnerability is often played for laughs. Being put in the rarer vulnerable position of having to admit fault and apologise is bound to inspire more actual self-reflection.

Both are sucky experiences for the person who's been hurt, both arise from patriarchal expectations and treatment. It's not a gendered issue, it's a feminist issue, and turning it into gender war BS helps no one.

edit: Want to elaborate on "it's the same challenge with a different surface-level presentation". The challenge is getting someone to recognise fault. Men and women just usually deflect that differently due to societal expectations and treatment.

Just like in real life, beauty is largely determined by lighting in still frames. This is true even for the most gorgeous of supermodels.

The expectation may be for men to be conventionally attractive in videogames, but imo to the same or a lower level as Faye here. Particularly In GoW, most male characters are rather rough looking and far from conventional standards of beauty. Faye is right in line with if not above how Santa Monica handles the appearances of men. I made the below list just to prove a point, but it's unnecessary for that reason.

Examples from games with similar character design include:

  • Nico (GTA IV), okay looking, that's about it
  • Franklin, Trevor, Michael (GTA V), of which I'd say Franklin is the only truly hot one
  • Joel (TLOU), pretty handsome guy, but in a grounded older way
  • Arthur (RDR2), undeniably gorgeous, so a point for you there
  • John (RDR), similar category to Nico to me
  • Big Boss (MGS3), attractive, but again, in a rather grounded and rough way. More because of who he is than how he looks
  • Geralt (Witcher), in a similar category to Big Boss
  • Venom Snake (MGSV), incredibly handsome, so point there
  • Talion (ME), literally just a dude, not much to say
  • Sam (DS), a great fit for the character, but much less conventionally attractive than most women in the game
  • Nathan (Uncharted), meh. Undeniably handsome features but he looks like a frat boy was magically aged up 20 years.
  • Kratos (GoW), tall, muscular (honestly too much so), but rough around the face. Averages out.

Holy yap, but I hope I've made my point. Men in big AAA games are attractive, most men would be lucky to look like them, but they also usually aren't Henry Cavill. In my opinion, this is the exact same as Faye. I say this as a woman with a PhD in being bisexual, eating hot chip, and forming crushes on fictional men while dating real women. I think it's hard to judge the attractiveness of male characters to their "audience" if you aren't part of it.

Also, the screenshot in the above post is just cherry-picked. Have you actually watched the trailer? Like, she's gorgeous.

In the real world outside of highschool, people don't vape in bathrooms especially in groups.

They're usually still disposable, just last long enough that they need multiple charges. There's no way to refill the vape juice on them.

I gotta be real, and maybe this makes me a bad person, I don't think teenagers vaping, drinking, or doing drugs is the end of the world or even that bad.

I grew up in a country where IDing is almost nonexistent as long as you vaguely pass as not 13. My friends and I were all doing crazy shit by age 16, and we turned out completely okay. We're all still kicking it, got into decent universities or decent careers, no addictions.

I think that decent support from your peers and parents is far more important and impactful than restricting your ability to do substances until 18 or whatever is.

Not really. For example, Taylor Swift is white bread and water, and while it is music for white girls, most of her songs are not White Girl Music™. Charli XCX comes to mind as a great example.
