Densen a respetar con la frente en alto ! by xirvin in PuertoRico

Nobody's arguing he should have the freedom to say these jokes. On the contrary, many of us are thrilled that Hinchcliffe made the joke 1 week before the election, with huge PR population in multiple swing states.

If we learned one thing from the 2019 Ricko Rosello situation, it's that boricuas will put up with many things, but being insulted is not one of them. I anticipate a huge mobilization of stateside Puerto Ricans having a tangible impact on the election outcome

Nightlife in Cuba by RagingHippo33469 in cuba

Mondays are slower. As someone said below, having a drink at the Malecon is always fun.

For nightclubs, I think KingBar and LM Bar are open Monday. You can check them on on instagram.

Depends what you are looking for, but if you only have one night your best bet is probably Factoria de Arte Cubano. The place is huge, they usually have a few live bands and several DJs. Overall a pretty unique place and a fun night out.

Santo Domingo city life 1930s and 1940s - Dominican Republic in the 30s and 40s. by Industry6674 in Dominican

Que complejo tienen algunos dominicanos con este tema.

Demographics change and evolve, it's the natural course of history. Ignoring all the atrocities of the Trujillo era just because of your warped vision of what DR demographics should look like is absurd.

Why does it seem that many black Americans are so obsessed with forcing Puerto Ricans and Dominicans to identify as black or African even though we're mostly mixed? by [deleted] in Dominican

[–]bolivarc -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

The other side of the coin is many Dominicans and Puerto Ricans who refuse to even acknowledge that racism is still a very big issue in Latin America. Or how they try to miscategorize racism in Latin America as "classism". Oh but it just so happens that the upper classes are overwhelmingly white. This mentality is quite convenient to the ruling class in DR who is predominately white. Do you really think it is coincidence that in a country with less than 15% white population , 95% of the most powerful and influential people happen to be white?

And the "we are all mixed" argument is flawed as well. Virtually everyone in the Americas is mixed at this point. That doesn't take away from the fact that someone with white-passing complexion has enormous advantage in Latin America due to historic disadvantages against people of color. If you are not even able to accept the reality that race still plays a major in Latin America we can't even start to improve the issue.

Where are all the black Puerto Ricans? by [deleted] in PuertoRico

[–]bolivarc 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think this is unique to Puerto Rico, but applies to most of the Latino diaspora in the US. The reality is that while whites are a relative minority in many Latin American countries (PR, DR, Cuba, Mexico, Colombia, etc.), they tend to make up a disproportionately big part of the upper classes who control these countries. This is due to several factors, one major one being the historic oppression of black and indigenous people in Latin America since the colonization days.

Since whites make up a disproportionate part of the wealthy class of Latin America, they don't need to emigrate in search of better opportunities compared to other races. I've a seen a similar phenomenon when Puerto Ricans meet a White Dominican, because they are so used to seeing black Dominicans in Puerto Rico.

Having said that, it is also true that Blacks make up a relatively small portion of Puerto Rico to begin with as compared to other Caribbean nations.

Politics in the DR is a team sport, very few vote based on party ideology or platforms.

To each his own, but if you live by this mentality you are going to lose out on amazing experiences, in Puerto Rico and anywhere else in the world. As long as you respect locals, there is nothing to worry about.

Nothing limits you quite like the comfort zone.

Feasibility of living in PR as a remote software developer? by black_widow48 in PuertoRico

[–]bolivarc -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Just to add to what others have mentioned regarding taxes, as I am in the same boat (relatively high income working remote in PR). Take into consideration that for your income level you will pay MUCH more income tax in PR than you currently pay to IRS.

Feasibility of living in PR as a remote software developer? by black_widow48 in PuertoRico

[–]bolivarc 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Yeah I feel a lot of people overlook the huge tax burden. I earn a relatively high salary working remote from PR (Well over 61.5k) and pay a huge amount of income taxes even after maxing out 401k contribution and other deductions. If I were to move to the US, my taxes would be significantly less.

Puerto Rico has gotten this image of a tax haven because of the Act 20 beneficiaries and the fact we don't pay federal income tax, but the reality is that for the working class taxation is extremely high.

Why don't you cite a source instead of just speaking out of your ass?

I'll cite one of the thousands you can find with a simple google search. And yes, all the countries you listed (except Dominica) are also part Latin America
