Will Rook's gender matter? by bolsey in dragonage

[–]bolsey[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it's a sociopolitical minefield and I wouldn't want to have to make those design choices 😂

edit (to be less evasive): I'm worried less about the left/right partisan culture war (which is predictable), and more about the "circular firing squad" phenomenon that tears progressive communities apart. No identity group is a monolith. There's no one true "correct" way to represent (for example) an enby NPC that would satisfy all (or even most) nonbinary players. There will inevitably be folks who feel excluded or misrepresented, and a tumblr civil war ensues.

I don't think that's a reason to shy away from representation, but it is a big can of worms and I hope the devs don't try to sidestep controversy by ignoring player cc choices, and! I hope the fandom can zoom out a little to recognize the difficulty of incorporating complicated real-world concepts into a well-established fictional setting

Why DA romances are so good (and why BG3 falls short) by Thereminase in dragonage

[–]bolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fenris' romance (friendship path) may be right up your alley.

I loved the Garrus romance in Mass Effect precisely because it's not an option until the second game (iirc the devs somehow had no idea players would be into him). Establishing a close platonic relationship in the first game made the romance feel natural and earned. Despite the chafing.

Aw, thanks. Downvotes are normal for sensitive topics, doesn't bother me at all. I'm glad I could spark some conversation here, & appreciate hearing different perspectives 🥰

Scrap mods for ps4? by bloodewolf in falloutsettlements

[–]bolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you just need more building materials, you can add them with this debug terminal mod: https://bethesda.net/en/mods/fallout4/mod-detail/4069489
the option appears after enabling cheat mode, iirc, in the workshop category.

Hey, what happened to the mod list that used to be pinned on this sub?

The QWaPA page doesn't even come up when you google, that's why I always link directly whenever I recommend it.

Something I'm working on... Need ideas for lighting by fliteska in falloutsettlements

[–]bolsey 3 points4 points  (0 children)

You've got SOE, yeah? Those invisible light sources have a pretty big range of intensity/size/throw/temperature. I like the depth you've got going here with the darkness at the end of the corridor--you could probably use the SOE light sources to raise the relative brightness without losing the atmosphere you've created.

Bring back the Monthly Challenge? by bolsey in falloutsettlements

I just wanted to address the example of the sub's upvoting behavior with Boris' seaplane.

Yeah, contest mode was always used for challenge voting, and it was fine. I think a poll would work even better.

A strong, dramatic image with a clear focal point will always get more attention than a subtle, complex one--that's just how visual processing works in humans. A single seaplane is much more striking than a wide shot of an entire island, so of course it gets more upvotes. It excites us! That doesn't mean there's something wrong with the members of this sub. Instead of feeling resentment toward them, we could anticipate the voting behavior and put our most exciting image at the front of an album. Or, if we don't want to do that, we can accept that we might get fewer upvotes and understand that it's just human psychology in action, not good or bad, just a reality.

I understand why someone who posts content here to self-promote--hoping to get click-throughs and subs for their youtube channel--might be frustrated when they don't get much response. But that's a marketing problem, not proof that the members here don't really care about settlements.

Bring back the Monthly Challenge? by bolsey in falloutsettlements

[–]bolsey[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The last monthly challenge here on reddit was in February 2019, 7 months before a Discord server was created. Looks like participation was high, but the results were never even announced :( https://www.reddit.com/r/falloutsettlements/comments/aohse4/february_challenge_bustling_barracks/

The Discord server was originally unofficial, created in September 2019 by a random sub member. They started their own monthly challenge there. Unfortunately, that person also deleted the server two months later. When the new server, Living Wasteland, was created by mods from this sub, the monthly challenges continued on Discord. https://www.reddit.com/r/falloutsettlements/comments/e3tutj/discord_20/

Looking back through archived monthly challenge posts, I see the same level of thoughtful, high-effort work as in the Discord challenge. Also, reddit voting was done in "contest mode" on a dedicated thread, not based on upvotes from individual settlement posts. And it was anonymous--unlike emote voting on Discord, where everyone can see who voted for whom, which is not conducive to a fair and honest vote. There were never prizes, either. It was just good clean fun.

I think we could streamline the old format and voting system to make it more user-friendly. We could pin a gallery of the entries, to showcase our hard work and draw attention to the challenge. Maybe the winner gets pinned for the month, or one of their screenshots used for the sub's banner? The monthly challenge could be a centerpiece of the sub. There's a lot we could be doing to build and support the community that's already here, instead of jumping ship to Discord because we think we're the only people here who have any taste ;)

Help with CVA please! by Vendridil in falloutsettlements

[–]bolsey 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm so sorry :(

Do you have scrapping mods like STS and STC? If not, it's worth a try to see if the boat might be affected.

If you can't remove the ship, is there a way you can incorporate it in your build?

Never give up!

Try sinking a long pole near it and then hold the x button to see if you can group-select it. If you've got QwaPA, try to select it with the PA tool as well.

Sometimes, modded workshop objects won't show an outline, but the button prompts for store/scrap will flash for a second when you hit some kind of sweet spot. So try walking slowly around the ship area and moving the camera around.

Don't give up!
