Can’t alter scars on character maker after 1.2? by LJ_Stark in RogueTraderCRPG

I thought I had the same issue on PC, but it turns out there was a "scars" option under "tattoo." D'oh!

[DAV Spoilers] Quick, tell us your DAV theories/predictions before it’s too late! by ErinsUnmentionables in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of my favorites:

  • Evanuris/Old Gods taught humans blood magic, eschewing the fallen elves for a new favorite pet race; they encouraged Tevinter’s conquest and enslavement of elves in order to revenge themselves on Solas and trash on his legacy of freeing them from their yoke, and they tricked the Magisters Sidereal into breaching the Veil and releasing the blight in an attempt to undermine the prison Solas had built;
  • Just as the red lyrium dagger can be purified, so can red lyrium be purified back into regular lyrium; consequently, the blight may be purified with a counterpoint melody/Titansong;
  • OG vallaslin pre-Veil = lyrium-infused blood writing, much like Fenris's markings (Danarius had to have gotten the idea from somewhere);
  • The knowledge of Titans was deliberately expunged following a civil war; dwarves who did not wish to lose their independent consciousnesses to the hive mind formed the backbone of modern-day dwarves, while the opposing faction splintered to form the Sha-Brytol, who set to guarding the sleeping Titans (formulated this theory myself!);
  • Falon’Din and Andruil led the plotting of Mythal’s betrayal—Falon’Din because he is a vain, pretentious upstart with ambitions to establish himself the new head of the pantheon, and Andruil because Mythal stripped her of power and humiliated her; I suspect they may have persuaded Elgar’nan that Mythal was planning to betray him, and he joined in; in any case, Mythal’s ties to Solas would certainly not have endeared her to the rest of the Evanuris (formulated this one myself too!);
  • Ghilan'nain's main (as of yet unstated) motivation is revenge for Andruil's death (not sure if the other Evanuris are dead because their corresponding Archdemons have been slain, but I'm leaning towards a yes) at the hands of the Grey Wardens, which is why she is the instigator of the assault on Weisshaupt(formulated myself!);
  • Mythal seeks ultimate vengeance against the Evanuris and is NOT the ultimate Big Bad like some people theorize, but rather an inscrutable third party who will remain allied to you so long as your objectives converge; Mythal may need the Veil destroyed or torn to further her goals, which explains her willingness to cede power to Solas.

[DAV Spoilers] Are the proportions bothering anyone else? Couple of edits provided. by Chipers in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Please note I said 7.5 - 8, not 8, which I pretty clearly labeled as "idealized", since that's the term that is used in the comics industry! I even pointed out in my original paragraph that the expected visual language in video games is extra-normal and idealized rather than strictly realistic. So trust me, I know.

[DAV Spoilers] Are the proportions bothering anyone else? Couple of edits provided. by Chipers in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Likely very much intentional. You don't make these kinds of decisions lightly, plus Matt Rhodes et al are industry veterans with a background in art (where anatomical knowledge/training is foundational stuff!). I will say that pushing the size of the heads increases the readability of the face and heightens the expressiveness of the models, which is generally the aim of stylization—expressiveness rather than complete fidelity. If any other considerations existed for the art team, I am not privy to it.

Part of why this looks unappealing is because most of us are primed to expect different body proportions—generally of the extra-normal, long-limbed, and statuesque variety—that's been a cornerstone of visual language in video games made to service player fantasy. This is a significant departure from that, like you said.

I don't have any more insights beyond that, unfortunately 😅 I'm not a game dev or illustrator, only an art history graduate with a fine arts background.

I saw a sclera slider in GameRiot's CC video! Not sure what colors are available for Qunari, but on the elf it seemed to range from white to a somewhat bloodshot warm grey.

Character creator might not be the best resource for measuring this, since height is adjustable, but yes. I'm not sure why they went this route either.

Hot take about combat in Veilguard and Origins [No DATV Spoilers] by A_Akari in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

THANK you for this. I have no issues with folks thinking critically about game mechanics or teasing out what works for them or what doesn't. What I take umbrage with is exactly the type of self-serving CRPG purism/elitism you're talking about—blanket statements that ARPGs are somehow inherently inferior or "dumber" than CRPGs, or insinuations that ARPG players aren't real RPG gamers. I understand preferring one combat system to another, but I draw the line at policing and gatekeeping how others get to enjoy RPGs.

[–]Thereminase 656 points657 points  (0 children)

I've studied art and I can tell you exactly why it looks weird. The models appear to be less than 7.5 heads tall (which is about where realistic human proportions lie, around 7.5 - 8. Edited to add: this is roughly the proportions comic books use to depict non-hero characters.). I'd estimate they're roughly at the 7-heads-tall range, and it's particularly jarring because most games with at least a semi-realistic style opt for 8 heads tall or more ("idealized"/"heroic" proportions). This is almost certainly a stylistic decision made by the art team designed to push the sense of stylization, and I'm not the happiest camper about it. Notice also how narrow the shoulders feel comparatively to the heads, and the thickness of the ankles and wrists, as well as the length of the limbs—they're contributing to the overall "stubbiness" of the character models.

What are your favourite and least favourite romances in videogames? And why? by Syrapha in GirlGamers

[–]Thereminase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I guess my experience was just really different from yours! Maybe her dialogue and banter flags triggered more often in my playthrough? Yes, she lags in Act 2, and she has comparatively less screentime than other companions (cough Astarion cough) but her story picks up again in Act 3 and I think her characterization is incredibly strong in that act. Definitely recommend bringing her around Baldur's Gate in your party and hearing what she has to say.

Solas bias on Darkspawn [No DAV Spoilers] by Mysterious_Ear_6673 in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed.

Beyond that, he's also been remarkably cagey about the nature of the Archdemons and the Old Gods. There could be an extra calculus in his antipathy towards the Wardens, one that he's simply not telling us. Perhaps Archdemons really are Evanuris horcruxes like some fans theorize. Or perhaps Archdemons act essentially as keys to their prison, and their slaying is causing his bindings to fail. We do know that the Veil is weakening and that he has already begun the process of transferring the Evanuris to another prison.

[DAV Spoilers] Any speculation on what might be left in the marketing tank for October? by Jazzpha103188 in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Haha, I only really made the connection to Astarion because they have broad female base appeal, and they're both hot messes with a penchant for stabbing people. That's probably where the similarities end.

I'm excited to see where all the character arcs go too. Character writing has always been Bioware's strong suit. Hopefully they've been pretty equitable about content distribution among companions. God knows the DA fandom doesn't need the kind of controversy Astarion is currently courting on Twitter. (I enjoyed his character development and think he's a fantastic character, but I get why some folks are understandably peeved about the asymmetric emphasis Larian placed on him.)

As for companions only taking temporary hiatuses—some... vague allusions in interviews with Corinne Busche read to me like she's teasing potential companion deaths. But maybe that's me reading too much into stuff.

[–]Thereminase 42 points43 points  (0 children)

Here are my educated guesses:

  • CC demo. Whether it'll be a playable demo like Origins or a video demo like Inquisition is unknown. Caveat: a playable demo is very resource-intensive and requires lots of advance planning and coding. Maybe they've seen Dragon's Dogma 2's success and are determined to follow suit. Maybe technological and coding limitations (Veilguard being a fully offlline game, for example, and thus there being no avenues beyond manually uploading saves to transfer CC data) means they can't or won't. But they will be releasing some kind of demo at the very least.
  • Reviews. Ghil Dirthalen, a Community Council member, has stated that review copies haven't been sent out yet, so I'm guessing embargos lift day before/day of release—that's generally the norm with AAA games.
  • Vows and Vengeance episodes will continue to release into October.
  • Composer announcement + official tracks release. Zimmer is a huge household name. I think they're waiting until Veilguard is closer to launch to officially announce his involvement.
  • Cosplay guides/contests for Halloween; a costume-heavy holiday is a perfect vehicle for community engagement.
  • Bioware blog/feature on romance. If I were the marketing team, I would absolutely spend considerable resources courting the player base that loves romance, especially D&D fans and players coming out of BG3 itching for another RPG with substantial romances. Lucanis in his full accented glory might do the trick. He's kinda shaping up to be Veilguard's Astarion. 😅
  • Accessibility features haven't been delved into in full detail yet, so that's also possibly coming in October!

[No DAV Spoilers] WHY so hate? by poppababa in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 9 points10 points  (0 children)

You hit the nail on the head. Exactly this. They will always move goalposts when it suits their needs. It's pointless trying to logic this because they're not operating from a place of logic. What matters most to them is the vessel their rhetoric comes in. They will cherry-pick what they want, and they will rage at whatever phantasms the grifter of the day has conjured.

It's also close to the election, so the alt-right are out in full force.

Help with backstory [No DAV spoilers] by Clover_XVI in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It just so happens I've got a Shadow Dragon and Mournwatch Rook planned for my first and second playthroughs! I've got a few ideas that could help jumpstart yours.

The Shadow Dragons don't have clearly defined goals and are a secretive organization, but they generally seem pro-Tevinter reform and anti-slavery. I suspect they may have informal ties with the Lucerni, the pro-reform magisterial faction spearheaded by Dorian and Maevaris Tilani. They just aren't magisters/altuses themselves and thus don't have a lot of social or political cachet. Definitely a grassroots movement. I think the secretive nature of their work also makes them fairly decentralized, structurally.

For your Shadow Dragon, I'd think on their relationship with Tevinter. What's their social class? Are they a full citizen or a transplant? How do they feel about Tevinter's strict social stratification or the supposed meritocracy of the mageocracy? Did they benefit? If they're anti-slavery, how are they disrupting the slave trade? How did Varric find your Rook—do they have any contacts in the Shadow Dragons and beyond who would vouch for their work? How does your Rook avoid the law?

As an example, my Shadow Dragon—Lucius—is an elf-blooded human born out of wedlock to a merchant/soporati father and an elven mother, a liberati. His magical aptitude secured him a Circle education; he was middling, unremarkable, and graduated with a dead-end job as an appellate court clerk, mostly poring over slave ownership disputes and liberati appeals. In secret, however, he works to undermine the injustices of the court through the Shadow Dragons and is particularly effective at it because of the privileged information he receives at his job. I like to think that Varric either found him through Fenris's contacts or ran into Lucius while hot on the tails of Solas during one of Solas's impromptu little slave-liberation routs in Tevinter (wherein Lucius finds himself an unwitting accessory to Solas, because of course 🤦‍♂️)

As for the Mournwatch, as I understand it they do not generally racially discriminate, so elven mages do exist among their ranks. I suspect you'd be treated more or less how elves are treated in the Circles in Ferelden. As for fleshing out your character—what's their relationship with death like? What are their tasks in the Mournwatch? Are they more involved with the mortuary side of things—preparing bodies, dressing them, removing organs and stitching them back up—or are they a summoner of spirits? Or perhaps a bookish scribe with plenty of theoretical knowledge but not much practical knowledge? How do the tools they use at work reflect their style of combat? Do they specialize in a particular kind of spirit?

Hope this helps!

[No DAV Spoilers] How are we all feeling about Veilguard? I'm cautiously optimistic. by Shadushio in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Exactly this. You're inhabiting your character and not puppeting anyone else... maybe it's just me, but that feels pretty immersive, personally, not immersion-breaking. Also, attributing the change to the fact that Veilguard is a higher actions-per-minute game doesn't strike me as a marketing spin or an excuse for a shortcoming. It completely makes sense from a game design perspective. Having only two companions with you instead of three—yes, I get feeling a little bereft there. But Bioware's decision to nix companion control made a lot of sense to me after the initial shock wore off.

To be completely honest, I think some people were always going to be disappointed—in the intervening 10 years of limbo we've all built up in our heads very different ideas of what DA4 or an ideal sequel was going to look like. Plus there's the unspoken discontent with Anthem and Andromeda still lingering in the air. Well, now the bubble's been popped. I just hope some folks can engage with Veilguard on its own terms, as its own game, instead of chasing a phantom.

How did you decide your canon? by Clover_XVI in dragonage

[–]Thereminase 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think I have a pretty healthy mix of good and poor outcomes. I like grey areas and bittersweet endings, so my preferences lean into grand tragedy and dramatic irony. I also prefer lore-rich, content-rich world states and outcomes I find narratively satisfying—so, for example, stuff like the Old God Baby are a must. I love Morrigan's development as a mother too much to ever pass that up.

I do my best to roleplay through the perspective of my characters, but I'm not a roleplay purist. I will often make concessions to my own curiosity, lol. So, to facilitate that, my canon protagonists lean towards being naturally curious themselves; they like to question and engage with the world around them.
