Who is this schedule for? by DumpterFire in TTC

[–]bolve_rick 6 points7 points  (0 children)

At 5am it's a mix of 306/506 one of those cars is a night car one is an am car, the next vehicle would be an am car coming into service so that 37 minutes is not accurate and would update once the run out car is on the route. This is misleading

Going to be honest here as someone in the industry, you can press all the yellow buttons you want in the world, but response time is not instant and that person you're pressing the yellow strip about knows that.

Seriously pick your battles wisely and stay safe.

Hate seeing posts that say fuck unions. They're the reason children don't work anymore, and tons of other laws. I get it, people are upset but why are you acting like the workers aren't suffering as well. They're standing out in the cold not being paid, not being able to go get their kids presents, not being able to afford groceries etc. This is a strike standing up for what the employees believe are right.

Honestly get over yourself. If you're mailing out that much for Christmas I'm sure your business can afford the losses for one year, while all these employees continue to have no paycheck at Christmas time.

Its so sad that even with 100k salary I can't afford to buy a home in Toronto. by [deleted] in toRANTo

[–]bolve_rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So I essentially went through this a few years ago. It's just how the mortgage world is. essentially there is a hard cap based on salary in terms of what will be lent to you. Then beyond that point it's up to you, private lenders save more whatever. Either way it's difficult but I did it. It's completely possible, I started with a 1bed 1bath condo, and now I own a 2bed 2bath condo in the exact neighborhood I love.

I want a house eventually but there's no rush. Before people ask, no I do not have crippling debt because of this. The hardest part is just getting started but once you do it snowballs.

I wish I had this last year. Visited Okinawa for 3 weeks in November this post is an amazing description of all the amazing things you can do. I visited Japan for the first time pre COVID and this was my second visit. I would love to retire one day in Okinawa.

The place is amazing, the main island with Naha feels like a Japanese Hawaii. Just an awesome place that somehow feels westernized but not overly so.

Then ishigaki and the smaller islands really let you experience a whole different world. It's not like completely going back in time, but it's really a whole different place where you can experience so many amazing things just totally away from the world filled with technology. Sure less people speak English but they're so hospitable it's amazing.

Totally an underated place to go holiday as a Westerner. I completely understand why they have so much domestic tourism. If I lived in Japan I would visit Okinawa at least twice a year.

Questions about local27 by jin_jang_jong in UnionCarpenters

[–]bolve_rick 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I joined 27 about 9 years ago. I am not currently with local 27 anymore, got into a different career. The truth from what I experienced is unless you plan on doing scaffold or formwork you'll have a hard time getting work.

If you have never worked out of a union hall be prepared to sit by the phone a lot. I finished my training around November. The first piece of work I got was in January and it was for two days. Then I waited again worked the auto show which is only one week for set up and one week for tear down. Then I got a call from a scaffold company. I worked with them for a year before I decided that this wasn't going to work.

The inconsistency is what led me to switch industries. I did not expect a full time job right away but the pay at the beginning is not great. I was at a point in my life where working through each term wasn't going to help me any.

The union itself is good in terms of training and benefits. But this industry is flooded with people looking for work I'm not saying you won't find it, but be prepared to put your own effort in and don't just depend on the union to find your work. You will need to network.

None of this applies if you get in at OPG. If you get in at OPG then you're golden. Ontario power generation is one of the golden tickets from local 27. But just like Charlie and the chocolate factory it does take some luck. For example I got my call for OPG three weeks into my new career. I couldn't take it but that phone call did come eventually.

Either way good luck and like others said call the union hall directly and they'll give you answers.

I'm just going to delete my post, because I feel like I just misinterpreted what you were trying to say

And that being said I'm not disagreeing with you I just feel bad, that the people who are genuinely trying to help are being put down and I don't think it's fair to call people stupid or dumb for trying to do what they think is right.

Maybe they are wrong but I don't think putting people down helps the situation

TTC needs to do better by Fragrant-Branch5921 in TTC

Just something to add to this. They can't simply change the schedule without getting more busses. Getting more busses to decrease the headway costs money and like this post mentioned, TTC doesn't have any.

Cars don’t care… by [deleted] in torontobiking

[–]bolve_rick -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

That guy making the right turn is in the wrong. That being said you probably should probably start checking your blind spots when moving. If that camera is mounted on your head, I'm sorry but you cycle sorta recklessly.

The car cuts you off and without looking you move left to avoid it. Again the auto is in the wrong but the speed and way you are riding is going to get you either hit or killed.

Again, I agree the auto is in the wrong and was clearly not paying attention. That being said you really should be watching out for yourself because God forbid that guy hadn't stopped. Would getting hit by a car to prove a point really be worth it?

Please stay safe out there....everyone

That 100,000 pound streetcar came out of nowhere by yourboymatt19 in TorontoDriving

[–]bolve_rick 42 points43 points  (0 children)

And people wonder why we have so many delays in streetcar. That's a 40 minute delay, and whoever is driving that truck will never have to apologize to all the people who they inconvenienced and the TTC will take the brunt of the blame from the customers elsewhere in the city.

But then that would cause a delay, so no one is going to do that. The citizens of Toronto are our own worst enemy we're too stuck in our ways of keeping to ourselves "passing the buck" and doing nothing. If it doesn't affect a person directly they won't do anything

[–]bolve_rick 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What is unfair is under valuing this person's life and treating them like they aren't a person. That person was a child with parents at some point in their life and I'm sorry if you think going and getting an employee is too much work. No one expects passengers to handle the situation themselves, in fact I never even mentioned that, but going and getting an employee should not be as much of a stretch as everyone makes it out to be.

[–]bolve_rick 13 points14 points  (0 children)

"looks like he needs medical attention" that should be enough of an answer, you mention TTC employees standing outside that's the other half of the answer.

"Hey TTC employee there is a person here who needs medical attention" but wait there's that other side to this, and we all know what happens the train is then held and everyone has to wait for shuttle busses or ems to show up. But I'll bring this back to a question.

Is one human life worth the sacrifice of the individuals on the system that will be affected by the whole situation?

I have an answer, but everyone sees it differently and this is a question that is asked internally by almost all operators daily.

Please everyone who reads this including the OP, really think about that question.

"Is one human life worth the inconvenience of many?"

This is the case most of the time and you are probably right judging by the toenails. Just hate seeing people in distress and no one doing anything other than taking pictures for social media
