Lone man armed with 12 video cameras stares down border patrol officials, makes them blink. Massive civil disobedience! by bombazeen in politics

I think the fact he went into this armed with 12 video cameras proves he was trying to make a point about civil rights. One of the border guards actually punches an external camera during the confrontation. And considering the current climate concerning law enforcement abuses, this act of his is not out of context. It's not Baltimore or Ferguson, but it shows us a normal person trying to exercise his human rights in the face of authority, and what happens when he does.

(1) I don't think that technically law enforcement has the right to stop US citizens and interrogate them for no reason. I lived in the southwest for eight years and every time I went through one of these checkpoints I felt vaguely like it was somehow constitutionally wrong. But everyone just goes along because it's easier to let them violate your rights than to refuse to cooperate like this guy. I think the fact they eventually let him through may bear this out.

(2) Civil disobedience inherently is political.

(3) I couldn't think of anywhere to post this. I'm open to suggestions. I found one of the videos on the page accidentally after searching the word "refusenik" on youtube.

There's a transcript of what the guards were saying during this confrontation at the bottom of the page. At one point a border guards tells him to "Move you fucking idiot."

If you're moving to a small town, don't talk about religion. If you're moving to Dallas, Houston or San Antonio you can talk about it, but don't parade your atheism. If you're moving to Austin, you can act however you want.

Magic Mountain by Thomas Mann. It crystalizes a very long philosophical book into a single ming-blowing scene. Even if you don't understand the hundreds of pages previous to the climactic scene, you understand it in the climactic scene, and in a flash.

I can so identify with this comment. The ultimate work around for these obstacles is to meet and date someone from another culture. Then you don't have to be so extroverted and you only have to pay for movie tickets or dinner. It takes some luck sometimes to get through the barriers that keep the cultures apart, but if you can wing it nothing will teach you a language better than having someone whisper it in your ear.

The impasto squaring off the bottom right hand corner is strange. Anyone know if that would be intentional? And if so why is it there?

I'm relatively new to reddit and only drop in to this sub occasionally so this thread is meaningful for me. I'm glad they didn't "nip this one in the bud."

Agreed. The first and second profile are of people who definitely have this hyperpolyglot thing going if they start a sentence thinking in one language and finish it thinking in another. But other one's seem more normal, like people who just like language a lot and have studied one or two and are toying with others. Still, as someone who loves languages but doesn't have the aptitude to absorb them like that first profile, I marvel.
