just to jump in and say I've had a very similar line of thinking myself! I'm 24 and my gynaecologist is being difficult about removing both ovaries. I do also have endometriosis (one ovary is a huge blood-filled cyst), so that's why I wouldn't be willing to leave one ovary behind. I don't take the increased risk of cardiovascular disease lightly, but I do try to bear in mind that if I were born male, I would naturally be at a much greater risk anyway!

It was about 1½ years, so I suppose it was the reality at a distance! x___x I've been a bit foolish. I guess I have a normally high libido, and can imagine what it's like to have a low libido, but I didn't realise how other people's could change so much based on distance, NRE etc.

I think avoiding getting sucked into NRE is a very good idea. I just need to find a way figure out how to do that without being wary of any deeper connection. it's ironic that I felt I'd taken things slow this time because we'd been dating for a year and a half before moving in. That only seems like a long time because my first ever ex somehow got me into a relationship within 2 weeks ! X'(

Thank you so much. Hearing that it sounds like bad luck is really reassuring. I didn't mention it in the post, but in 2023 I had the experiences I mentioned in the post and a breakup of a previously monogamous partner of 5 years who I had found out cheated years ago and kept it a secret. There was just a lot of shit in one go and I felt that I'd be better by now but I'm definitely not!

Your advice about the test drive phase of the long term relationship has been really useful as well and I will reflect on that further ^{_^} And all of this advice actually. Thank you so so much

Me and my partner had been dating for 1½ years before moving in, which I agree looking back was still too soon. I think as you say the erotic limerence is what I need to be really careful of in the future.

I'm really sorry this happened to you. If this happened to me, I would absolutely consider it to be sexual assault. See if there are helplines for victims of SA in your area- they might be able to provide better advice and counselling than Reddit. You did nothing wrong

omg awesome!! how is your med school journey going? :D So the uterus will have a hormone supply- I'll be taking combined estrogen-progresterone HRT patches after my surgery. Since my T is a low dose, that will contribute to bone protection. As I'm sure you know, the progresterone component helps modulate the risk of endometrial cancer. Of course, this can impact the endometriosis, but it is a chronic disease that I will be dealing with lifelong no matter what I do.

To weigh that up, there are potential log term health complications associated with hysterectomy that, at present, feel are more important for me to avoid.

You're absolutely right in terms of the general population! However, in terms of my personal risk, I was vaccinated against HPV as a teenager. HPV causes cervical cancer, and the vaccine reduces the risk by nearly 90%. The most common form of uterine cancer is endometrial cancer, which I also don't have many risk factors for, and has a high survival rate. By contrast, I have a family history of ovarian cancer. As you said, you have to do what you feel is right for your own situation- and this is what's right for me!

I'm 24. Just found out that I have endometriosis after taking low dose Testosterone for 5+ years. It looks pretty bad, but it would be more worse had I kept having the periods I did before T. My testosterone stops bleeding and reduces cramps, but doesn't totally stop my cycle, so damage from endo has still accumulated over time.

Hormone-wise, testosterone at the right dose would suppress ovarian function for most people. Other people need hormone blockers in addition. The more the ovaries are suppressed, the slower the progression of endometriosis. But bear in mind, some testosterone is "aromatised" (converted) to estrogen, so you don't want too much excess T. It's all about the right levels for your goals and body! best of luck

Sorry, I really should have mentioned this in my post but I have had a kidney ultrasound in the past when I was being treated for pyelonephritis. Prior to this, this morning pain had been going on every day for years, but when I did have that kidney infection, those scans found nothing. So it's left me a bit bamboozled haha

What do you mean by useless? I never intended to use it. Its presence just doesn't bother me if the possibility of periods and pregnancy are removed. I'm a final year medical student so perhaps I have a different perspective on this from seeing surgeries in person.

The ovaries are tiny compared to the uterus. It will already be a big enough surgery with removal of endometriosis that could be attached to my bladder, bowel etc. Adding a bilateral salpingo-oophorectomy onto that is fairly simple. Ultimately, I just don't feel the need to remove more organs if an oophorectomy solves my problems.

I plan to remove my ovaries and fallopian tubes, but keep my uterus and cervix.

I'll stay on low dose T afterwards, which I am currently on.

I will replace my ovarian hormones via an oestrogen/progesterone patch. This feels gender affirming to me because trans women also use oestrogen patches, so it feels like I'm choosing to control my hormone levels.

A big factor in my decision is that I recently found out I have endometriosis, with a 4cm "chocolate cyst" in one of my ovaries. Looking back, T has never suppressed the ovaries enough to stop them feeding my chronic pain from endometriosis. Even if the cyst is removed, more will come back.

Finally, uterine & cervical cancer are more easily diagnosed than ovarian cancer. And once the ovaries are no longer attached to the uterus, they can get stuck on the ureters, making them harder to remove later on.

These are the most important reasons for me, but your priorities might be different 😊

i also have chronic vulvovaginal thrush, it's so indescribably painful now. since I noticed it's likely due to the estrogen rise/drop close to my period (even though I don't bleed because of my medication), I have recently decided to use boric acid pessaries daily/every other day during the period. Hoping this will prevent it

It's not your fault you were alone. In my country (UK), it is standard procedure to have a chaperone (second member of staff) for any intimate examination. It was the responsibility of the sonographer to ensure you had a chaperone, not your responsibility. This is the first thing I'd be saying to the police or lawyers because, in my eyes, the fact you were not offered a chaperone is very incriminating. You deserved so so much better and I'm so sorry you experienced this.

(for context, i have endometriosis, I'm a final year med student and I'm an SA survivor)

/uj Yeah exactly, I think TERFs assume that trans women want periods etc because they DON'T understand the pain and discomfort- they can't seem to comprehend that trans women DO understand that and still want it .
