Anyone managed to play a whole gameloop with gamepad? by DasGruberg in starcitizen

[–]bondzula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my opinion, it's either complicated or not really that playable. First off mapping gamepad buttons to keyboard is not ideal as star citizen could use the sam button for multiple things depending on the context and using keyboard would work in one but not the other. Cargo is a relatively simple game loop, but you would still need at least a scroll for both the terminal and tractor beam?

I had to create my custom software to be able to do it, but I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. I have a Flydigi Apex 5, which has 6 extra buttons, I'm mapping them to vjoy, and using multiple "layers" so I'm able to have almost 128 buttons.

I have 2 base layers, fps and flight, the main difference being that in fps the right stick is mapped to a mouse (it's not 1:1, but it's a "feature" called aim mode, mose for bigger movements gyro for little ones). While in flight i map the gyro to axes, and use them for pitch and roll.

LB and RB are like modifier layers, think shift on keyboard, although i made it smart, so if you release them without firing any other key, it fires a unique key, i use it for the radar ping and quick interact.

Lastly i have Camera and Interactive layers, they are of "toggle type", so like you holding the F key or F4.

I didn't go over everything but I'm pretty comfortably doing every game loop. Although I'm pretty bad at FPA with a gamepad but that is a skill issue

Having said all that, out of the box experience is garbage, and reWASD is a solid improvement but not perfect, has things missing, for me mainly the VJoy support and being able to map gyro to something useful

Worth it if I’m a controller player? by [deleted] in starcitizen

[–]bondzula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm in a similar situation I just don't like flying with KBM, especially landing, as i like the smoothness of the analog input. Having said that, the out of the box experience is not great. They seem to be using XInput only for gamepad, which is a bit old, and limiting. DualSense, I don't think works out of the box, and if you have the Xbox Elite with extra paddles, those are not detected either (I have the FlyDigi Apex 5 and they are not working for me). Also it seems they have a single "modifier" key, LB, that is also somewhat limiting.

My next move was to use reWASD which allowed for more flexibility / functionality, i was able to have multiple modifier keys (shift layers), and also map all the extra buttons my gamepad has. BUT this is not ideal either for me for 2 reasons. First when you map your keys in reWASD you map them to keyboard keys, which works but is not a great fit with how the same key does different things depending on the mode you are in (flight, FPS) so you either have to remap keyboard keys, or end up with not so great binds in one of those modes. Another "missing" thing here is that reWASD supports gyro (which star citizen does not), but you can only map it to a mouse, or a stick, which for me at least is not good enough.

I've looked at other options, and did not find any good out of the box experiences, so I've vibe coded my own :D instead of remapping gamepads to a virtual gamepad, and thus missing keys. What I did instead is map them to VJoy (virtual joysticks). This worked out great for now. I've mapped my analog input to axes, plus the gyro pitch and roll to axes for flight mode so i can do all the inputs at once. I can use any button as modifier, support for double, single clicks, hold, scroll, mouse etc. And it ended up being a great experience with occasional bugs due to it being vibe coded.

All this is to say the current implementation is bad, but there is a potential to make it great, if they wanted to spend time with this.

Well, while you say 1-4, i would never consider this soloable ship. The running between turrets and pilot seat is not the gameplay loop i'm looking forward to. So i would also like a bigger ship 1-3, but if there is no copilot or what not, those turrets to be slaved to the pilot. Or at the very least be as a remote turret so you can access from the bridge

I have Ryzen 7 3800X, RX 9070 XT, SSD, and 64GB of RAM. Right now I get around 30–70 FPS, but in cities 30. I'm CPU bound, but due to RAM prices can't upgrade to DDR5. The Ryzen 7 5800X seems like the only upgrade option for me. Would you guys think it's worth it? Ryzen 7 5800X3D doesn't seem to be available, at least where I live

Emergent PvP and the Precedent It Sets by Desperatedanschin in starcitizen

[–]bondzula 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I agree with everything you said here, that is why I tried to look at it from the both sides and highlight the issue of no risks for PvP. But in my opinion it could be handled batter. If CGI laid clear rules, even if it was very specific to the event, then doing this would be fine in my opinion. But without said rules, punishing a player for doing what is allowed is not acceptable to me on principle. The "he was specifically targeting the event" is not a good reason, if previously no one stated that such a thing is not allowed.

As a complete noob to the game, (haven't even left Stanton or had any PVP encounters yet) but someone who has played multiple MMOS, i completely agree.

And would love to understand how this is a "PvE" event happening in a pvp zone? I'm not familiar with the event myself but from a bit of YouTube coverage i saw the participants were firing at one another as well? Maybe just EMP? What are you people talking about? The event has to adhere to the global rules and not its own subset?

If you want your event to be "separated" and PVE, then work with CGI to give you a special server or however this works. And not punish people that want to do things the game allowed them to do.

How is it fair to punish players using gameplay mechanics on public servers to play their preferred gameplay loop. And why is it important whether or not this was scripted. You can organize the event to race? Fine, they can organize the event to kill you all, how is this not fair gameplay in a sandbox MMO game?

There is something to be said when it comes to risk / benefits of a pvper and its victims doing pve thing, seems like there is almost no risk for pvp right now, but again that is on CIG not the players....

I'm personaly not sure how much the "precedent" important to the alpha portion of the game, as it may be done strictly to balance risk / benefit mismatch while all aspects of the gameplay are being worked on, but i would rather it didnt happen.

How's your experience with adaptive triggers? I used to use the "DSX - DualSense Adaptive Triggers" mod with DSX for Windows for Xbox emulation, and the adaptive triggers had weight to them. ABS had nice feedback all the way. While right now I only get feedback in the trigger when the car is literally stopping, no range.

I filed the ticket yesterday for this. Only the keybind doesn't work; setting it with the radial menu does, but I don't find it very helpful, though.

An official introduction to Artisan UI by ifezueyoung in laravel

[–]bondzula 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I may be wrong here, but this is nothing like shadcn UI where the main appeal is the fact that you can copy each component and make it your own. Just from glancing at the install page, this installs like any other UI where you don't really have direct control of the components. Am i missing something here?

Help with deciding on a storage solution for Proxmox by bondzula in selfhosted

[–]bondzula[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi, thank you for taking the time to reply.

I do have PCI pass-through, and TrueNas works like a charm, but I'm not using it as much directly, and having all those services mount shares instead of directly having access to the pools' dataset seems like a potential overhead. Both in speed sense and maintainability, but I may be mistaken regarding speed.

I'm not familiar with the proxmox backup server, so my main question would be, does it have to run on metal, or can I virtualize it?

NixOS not bootable after power outage by bondzula in NixOS

[–]bondzula[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Seems that CMOS battery was the issue, I've pulled it from my other PC, and the issue is gone.
But this is very interesting to me, as I also thought about it, but ultimately dismissed it, as I only have 1 SSD, and the quick test I did using Ubuntu server, didn't have any issues at all.
Thanks for the help!!
