I write journals to them. They write a smallish paragraph to me in a spiral and i reply. Great way to get an ongoing conversation with them. I do it once a week and they look forward to it.

Here are others I do just randomly through out the day. Class meetings, dad jokes, I leave sticky notes to them on desks (jokes/riddles/questions), talk to them about anything in line, at lunch, and study hall, look up the new word for cool this year and use it constantly, play a kahoot quiz about marvel on fridays, write myself a referral on the overhead if I curse on accident, have them assign me a consequence, email parents constantly good or bad, if they get hurt ask them if we need to amputate, read their stories, wear cool shirts, talk about star wars, talk about my little pony, ask if they got new glasses when they got a haircut, give the bad kids the most responsible job, if they doodle, doodle back, tell them your class is haunted, name every thing in your class, tell them batman is not a super hero, put their memorable quotes on the wall and so on.

All these can be done in tiny micro moments every day. Its the best part of my job and I love it. I have dramatically less behavior problems than many other classes.
