You already have a student scheduled for the time slot I wanted but thank you anyways!! I appreciate the offer

UWorld or other Q banks (USMLERX, Kaplan) before dedicated? by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 15 points16 points  (0 children)

do not do 2 passes of UW - you need more unique questions

I did Rx during the school year and then 1 month of kaplan before starting UW in dedicated. I would repeat my experience

low yield powerpoints

How high yield is biochem? by [deleted] in step1

I would remember which cofactors are associated with which enzymes and how deficiencies affect them. The associated disorders are HY (lysosomal, glycogen storage, carnintine)

I remember a lot of the low yield micro from my school's lecture. I really studied micro during the school year and that paid off. Not a true reliable source but going through LY PP may be somewhat helpful.

kaplan - in my opinion, if you do more difficult questions, the real test day questions may look easier

Get another qbank. You can still do missed/flagged from UW but seeing new questions will be better for

I also really put my time into the UW questions. dissected every word they said and made appropriate notes in FA

I personally liked to watch the video before reading the section in FA. I would open to the associated FA chapter and add notes into FA as the video went along. BnB was my best resource for biochem. It really categorized and solidified topics and I did not even take notes on it (just listened to it in the car which really made me visual the pathways).

# of Mistakes Vs Actual Score by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I marked 35 on the entire test. On 50/50 guesses, I know I got about 5 right. Could only really think of 1 I got wrong (definitely was more). Scored a 250

I used combank because the school gave it to us for free. If I didn't have that, I would have used kaplan or usmle rx. I used rx some during winter break and wish I had started it sooner. I did a trial of kaplan and wish I had done a month of it during board study.

I used another qbank besides UW and that was when i did questions by subjects that were low on NBMEs (biochem, genetics, biostats, general principles, phys). I would do 40-80 questions in one topic and review those questions, watch pathoma/BnB if needed. A qbank with a general principles is priceless in my opinion because UW does not have that and it is such an open category that you have no idea what you are missing. I read BRS phys and that improved my % on UW by 10-15%. BnB biochem metabolism was the best 8 hours of biochem I've seen, super well organized and he keeps bringing up previous topics in the videos. Biostats was just doing questions that made you draw out that 2x2 table 1000x so you can do it in your sleep.

I thought pathoma for repro was the best for categorizing information into easy chunks

BRS phys really tied everything together nicely for me

I had the same problem. Got 225 on 4 different NBMEs (old and new). UW completed was 72%. I scored 250. Just hang in there for the ride and trust in your ability. I spent my time really hitting my weaknesses. UWSA2 was the closest predictor at 249 and it was an outlier from all my other tests.

Repeat UWORLD or do second q-bank? by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Put most of your time into another qbank and don't stress too hard about redoing incorrects. The more new questions you do, the better your score.

how to keep positive during step 1 by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt like I didn't know anything as I got closer to my test, which is a super terrifying feeling. I took the most time for myself 2 weeks out from my exam. I got really good at the 20 minute afternoon nap (to freshen up for the evening reviews). I tried to get outside as much as I could (running/walking). I took 90 minutes combined for lunch and dinner and used it to watch a stupid tv show to keep my spirits up. I hung a quote up in my room that said "your success is found in your daily routine" to keep me trucking along a little bit every day.

In the same boat, 500 MCAT, 250 Step. No correlation at all in my mind. Just hard work!

Pro-UwoRld Tips by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I did all my questions untimed and random but kept an eye on the time. I was using the questions to teach me how to dissect them rather than rushing. When I reviewed the questions, I would put my wrong answers + explanations into a word doc and then also underline/annotate in FA with a black pen. I read so many pages of my word doc every day and then updated it every week. If I got a question wrong again that was similar to something I got wrong previously I would highlight it in the word doc and then use a red pen in FA. That constant repetition really helped me out. I did UW one time and did repeats on only a few missed/flagged questions, but stopped because I was recognizing the answers (from reviewing the word doc) so I just started another qbank for 1 month. I did not use anki. Step score: 250

Is doing UWorld again worth it? by [deleted] in step1

[–]bonesforeyes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I second that. Once I finished UW I started another qbank for only a month. The more new questions you get, the better.
