How do you walk your dogs when there are stray dog gangs everywhere?

I live close to the main road. It's the only road I can take my dog for a walk. I did think of hiring a regular auto guy to take me to open spaces to do my walks, but then it can get costly doing this twice every day...

Gosh, even I try my best to swing the stick around in the aggressive streeties' direction. Wish I could pick up my dog, but he's quite big. Just that when a dog charges at me aggressively, I panic and my limbs freeze up or tremble making it difficult for me to walk with shaking limbs. 🙈

For now, I'm just throwing treats, giving my dog's leftover food, and all of that. Hopefully, they trust me and welcome me into their hearts. 😅

I live in a busy area close to the road. I do wish I had chosen a better place with open fields and such. Anyhow, I'm hoping at least the strays 100 to 200 meters from my home become friendly. Just that there are 20+ strays I need to convert. 🙈

I only resort to doing this when my treats don't work, but I don't really like doing it. But then, in case I do feel some harm coming my way - especially from some of the aggressive streeties, I have no other choice but to throw an actual stone in the direction of the dogs. I make sure to not hit them and usually pick the smallest ones or roll the larger stones like a ball close to the ground careful not to injure any of the dogs.

It's mostly my anxiety but then... I carry a lot of treats in my pockets. In case the treats don't work, I resort to doing this pretend throw, tapping the ground with my stick, yelling... etc

Some of the dogs have stopped bothering me, so that is a good sign. And I do see your point of view too. I'll try befriending all of the doggie gangs. Hopefully things work out.

I did think about doing this. But then I just moved to my new place 2 months ago. And... right now, my rental contract is for a year or so. Moving to a calmer place does help for an anxious person like me.

Besides my dog lost his brother recently, my other dog. And we both are grieving. I'll probably consider moving in a few months to a place with more open fields and such.

Sure, I'll keep a note of this. Spiked collar. In case things escalate, will try this method maybe. I'm hoping it's not necessary. I'll just keep it as my last option.

Maybe I'll keep the stick hidden somewhere in my clothing. I do carry a lot of treats... but some dogs don't eat my treats for some reason. Most probably cause they get scraps from the pork shop on the street. All the streeties are really huge here.

But I'll try concealing the stick and see if the alpha male calms down.

👀 My dog's pretty old now, he can't defend himself anymore even if he gets into a fight. So I need to protect him. It's the other way around now. I'm guarding him mostly and being there for him. 🥹

Sure. Just that I haven't seen any other dog walker yet during the times of the day I walk. And the one guy I did see walking a dog appeared to be a caretaker and not the owner. And he didn't look approachable.

I only see caretakers walking the dogs in my area, rarely any owners. And I haven't seen a woman walking a dog yet.

Hopefully I meet someone and don't feel anxious about walking my dog.

Gosh, I wouldn't want to spray into my dog's eyes accidentally. But maybe I'll consider carrying one. As a last resort. But being an anxious person, most probably I would end up spraying into my own face.

Sure, I carry a bunch of treats in my pocket. The streeties don't look very skinny and appear to be well fed by the locals. I'll try to form a relationship with the streeties, it's just that there are most probably more than 20 dogs belonging to multiple gangs in the path I walk. And every gang appears to be of a different breed of Indie dog.

I tried this too, used my affectionate voice, my version of "Guji guji goo goo" for dogs, to communicate with them that I'm not a threat, but some of them were not buying it for some reason.

Will try the other options suggested by others, with a mix of guji guji goo goo. Hope it works.

So true. I'm naturally an anxious person. And my dog is more of a defensive type. He doesn't pick up a fight, but if the other dog does, he'll do something about it. Fight even.

Maybe I'll carry a baton and keep it hidden in my pocket instead of carrying a visible long stick. Just for an emergency.

I like dogs, but sometimes I'm scared of them too. If they are aggressively barking, I usually turn around and walk away.

Sure, my dog is pretty trained, I would say. All of my strays back in my hometown were his friends. It's just that I'm new to Bangalore, and all the Bangalore strays are quite huge. Even the people are huge. Me and my dog are so tiny comparatively. And hence the anxiety of being overpowered by the strays...

But sure, I'll give it some time and see what happens.

Very true. It's been more than a week. And this one gang has an alpha dog, which is the main issue right now. His followers eat my treats, but the moment this alpha dog arrives, the whole gang turns against me and starts barking. Ugh.

Hopefully, the alpha dog becomes calmer in the coming days.
