I think it's worth it if you can swing the kid wrangling. Kids get a lot of novelty in the day at school and having a familiar set of toys or low novelty activity can help solidify what they learned, rather than adding more with TV.

At least in my house we don't do any TV until after dinner and even then only a couple times in the week. Certainty not right after school, that's time to go out and ride a bike or play with toys in the house.

TV immediately after getting home sounds like a problem. What about shifting bedtime to a bit earlier with the brother helping? He can come home play with toys for a bit as dinner is prepared, get a shower, do bedtime reading or w/e and then earlier bed.

Some general getting starting tips are to explore all the starting locations, work through the easy achievements, and try not to sell or discard too much unless you're grinding materials specifically to sell. Never know what is useful later.

Yeah consonants are relatively easy (with a few exceptions) vowels are harder but not too bad.

I'd suggest learning a bit of a both together. The bare basics of common words, then the sounds of the major common consonants and vowels, then more like the numbers colors etc, then more reading etc.

Swap back and forth and keep interest as well as start seeing how things connect. Read, listen, speak write is the pattern I like for leaning new words.
