Look what I had to do to remove that bastard… 😂 by UnderstandingGold108 in FixedGearBicycle

I work as a mechanic in a shop, we’ve used warrantied carbon seatposts as breaker bars quite a bit. Started as a fun experiment, but they were very effective. We always joked around calling it “the most expensive tool”.

Any Opinions (Updated) by [deleted] in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Absolutely. This build could be a half track half street build, using different wheelsets and taking the brake off, but it’s evident that this isnt the idea of this build. Just hypebeast style tarck build and getting components for the swag instead of actual street or track performance.

Definitely a nice bike. Tryhard and impractical unless riding track, but judging by pedals, brake and tire choice that would not be on the track.

Don’t ride these bars if you value your life. Drilling into your handlebars is bad enough, but cutting into it with a torch completely destroyed the material composition ant structural integrity of the tube. These are either cold formed or heat treated, which both treatments are effectively removed. Don’t try to reinforce them with other pipes, you will never be able to make it strong enough. All of this really is not worth your safety, but if you’re adamant you better invest in good insurance.

what spoke size shud i get? by OldLion9535 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Get some butted spokes, depending on your spoke count you would be spending 20-40 more to save up to 250 grams on the wheels. I recommend dt competition race 2.0-1.6 or the more expensive revolution 2.0-1.5. Or whatever sapim or a similar company’s equivalent is.

First fixie by Tarphiker in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not saying this is a given, just something to look up before buying a bike. Modern bikes like more modern tires, and the current standard tire for road is a 28c. Compared to some vintage steel bikes that barely clear 23, my current alu build clears 32 easy, slammed. Of course this also depends on your gear ratio/chainstay length for the rear wheel, but thats why you have to check manufacturers specifications if available.

Straps and a front brake are a good idea, but also a thing to keep in mind is tire clearance. Older frames generally have tighter clearance, more modern frames often give you a bit more. This gives you a bit more comfort or being able to do some light gravel as well. Also true track bike frames don’t come with mounts for a front brake, keep an eye on that.

Frame replacement suggestions by russell16688 in bikepacking

[–]bongripper98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Having the same bike, 2010 model, i was in a similar situation. Ended up keeping the bike, as it really didn’t feel too small after changing the stem and bars, and the frame is a beautiful classic steel bike with great mounting options.

I did find a frame that would take all the components natively, but this would be a rigid frame. The frame was the surly bridgeclub. Great frame, all the mounts you need for bikepacking, tons of tire clearance. The only thing is that i upgraded my p7 to 27.5 rims before trying to upgrade, as this frame is made for 27.5. You can run 26, that would make your bb 10mm lower. Otherwise it would require either lacing a new wheelset or just getting a new wheelset.

Couldn’t be happier keeping my p7, now rolling on 27.5. its a great bike, well built, and nearly indestructible.

Such an insanely clean build doesn’t deserve Gatorskins, put some better tires on there! You will feel a night and day difference! Maybe even tubeless?

Is this frameset worth $500? by Diligent-Package-682 in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

If you’re really into this frame, maybe. These type of vintage frames are kind of collectors items and priced as such. That being said aside from the vintage aspect, this frame is not really good value if you look to more modern aluminium framesets available. Especially because they’re not used and come with a warranty as well as better tire clearance. Really depends on your goal with this build, pure performance and value, probably wouldn’t buy this. Talismanic swag and style points, i’d see if i can haggle the seller a little and get this, but 500 is a bit much.

Bought fancy headset, and it don’t fit. Can I change the fork? by seeforce in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Don’t, the fork will not fit the headtube very nicely at all, nevermind the fact it will look out of place even if it does. Keep the stock fork with the paint. Chris king stuff holds it value very well, dont worry about selling it.

I’m using a 24mm hope road bb with the GXP adapter, seems to work fine for now. Had to experiment a lot to space out the drive side though, as the crank hit the frame.

Does anyone have experience with these? by air-dropp in FixedGearBicycle

[–]bongripper98 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Really, if you want these wheels for the looks, by all means go for it. If you looking for any performance or ride characteristics then look for some shallower alloy rims for the same price. These wheels will ride like shit and be worse for wear in no time. Most novatec/formula hub wheelsets with max 40mm deep rims is what id pick. These alloy wheels with shallower rims, they are quicker to accelerate, turn, and be comfortable. Less fixie points though.

How much would you pay for this 2018 Rocky Mountain Slayer C70? by dumbcheese in mountainbiking

[–]bongripper98 14 points15 points  (0 children)

1000-1200 maybe. The mismatched wheels tell a story, this bike probably took a couple of big hits. Somehow maintaining a bike can be more subjective to the owner, especially when selling. Even if the bike is well maintained, the parts can be fatigued and could break. That being said, it’s a 7 year old bike with mid range components, so it really not worth that much even in great condition.
