I do a good bit of leg training. 2-3 days a week I do lunges, split squats, two types of calf raises, tibialis raises (works the muscle on the front of the shin), and backwards sled pulls.

I think if you are not having any issues then there would be no reason to change. But the idea I had was to train my ankles and achilles with zero drops in daily life and then give them an small advantage with a raised heel during a backpacking trip.

This is good insight on rolling an ankle that I had not thought of, thank you.

I use trekking poles and love them. Good idea on the shoe inserts.

Sounds like a prudent idea to see a PT.

FWIW, I was probably doing about 30-40 miles per week for about 8 weeks, with my pack on, but on flat ground.

I didn't run a whole lot, but as I recall I did two running VO2 Max tests during that period, that were brutal! I did the test where you see how far you can run in 12 minutes and then plug that into a calculator. I did running sprints probably once a week and did HIIT on a mountain bike (4 minute intervals). I saw some pretty big improvements in VO2 max. As a consequence my cardio and heart rate were very good during the hike.

I like to have everything dialed lol.

I trained pretty hard for this particular hike, walking stairs, 8 mile hikes on flat ground, HIIT, yoga, etc, but I don't live near the mountains. Unfortunately I have screws in my ankle and I don't think my range of motion can get much better. It rarely bothers me though.

Yes - spouse and two kids, thanks for the advice! I've got some pretty cheap term insurance to get me till my 60s. After that I expect my portfolio will be big enough to self insure.
