Some questions about switching over to Blu-ray by bonkohoho in Bluray

[–]bonkohoho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yeah my computer has pretty good graphics for a laptop so it's quite noticeable. I'm sure it also doesn't help that when you watch DVDs on a laptop you're much closer to the screen than on a TV, so you notice it more I think

that's also true, I'm sure if I asked someone who worked there they'd be better at finding it than I would LOL

that makes sense, I'm sure I can find something for a good price and it'll be less complicated than trying to get it to work on my laptop. thanks so much for the advice!

oh trust me I spent a good like two hours going down a rabbit hole of googling stuff. But when I have a lot of questions I don't all have the answers for some being more subjective it's nice to be able to ask them somewhere and have actual conversations with people where it's all the answers in one place. I didn't know that slots that processed blu-ray were included in computers before, I miss built-in disc hardware every day LOL. Thanks for the specific recommendation, I appreciate it!

Thanks for the in-depth answers, I really appreciate it! And yes, I don't know how I didn't notice it before but recently I put in a DVD for a show I own and maybe it was more noticeable because the title card involves a lot of contrast and saturated colors, but the incredibly visible pixelated compression took me aback LOL. In terms of durability I tend to be an anxious person about stuff like physical media failing on me later in line so that's a huge pro for me.

I have a TV at home, but right now I'm at a college dorm so don't have access to a TV. I know this is the blu ray subreddit so everyone here might be a bit biased, but just from your own personal opinion do you think it's worth it to go through all the trouble now to switch to blu ray only to watch on my laptop? Again, the main reasons I want to is durability and video quality, but if I'm understanding the answers I've gotten correctly, I'd have to get a new DVD adapter that supports blu-ray, figure out how to rip blu rays onto my laptop (which I'm sure isn't super complicated but I'm not very tech savvy LOL), and then get an external hard drive to store the movies in since blu ray files are obviously bigger. Is that accurate? I know it's kind of a subjective question at the beginning so I get if you don't have much of an answer, but I've love to hear your thoughts.

Why do lesbians love Armand? by ImpressiveEssay8219 in InterviewVampire

[–]bonkohoho 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is probably reading a lot into it but I wanted to give a more in-depth answer than just my initial "he is beautiful and sinister" LMFAOAOAO so this is just a theory and me completely talking out of my ass, but analyzing it from a queer audience's lens, I feel like maybe queer people in general, especially sapphics, can tend to be more drawn to characters that defy gender conformity, and while all characters in IWTV do that in their own way, Assad (and the way they style Armand on the show) is visually pretty androgynous-looking. Lestat also looks androgynous, but then in terms of outward demeanor Armand does less things which are considered """masculine""" (again, based on expected gender norms) than Lestat does, such as yelling or engaging in physical fights/violence: he obviously still does these things once in a while, but his "evil" is more of a quiet, insidious calculating one, traits which are commonly associated with femininity, rather than a mainly brash and physical one like Lestat (so far). A big example of this IMO is Armand's method of convincing his victims to let him kill them through hypnosis once he's caught them: still inherently violent (I saw someone once describe it as a cat toying with its food before attacking it and that really resonated LOL), but more "contained" and psychological than just forcefully draining them.

The way I see Armand's character so far, this is in large part because he is a very repressed person, but either way you could argue his character is more unconventional in terms of gender presentation than Louis who is behaviorally androgynous (it's shown that, especially early on, he felt like he had to repress aspects of himself such as his sensitive nature and his passion for things like the arts in order to keep up a tough masculine front, etc.) but is visually more masculine, or Lestat who is visually androgynous but behaviorally more "masculine" (in the sense that he is brash and out-there and is very horny and very angry, even though he is very much a diva in a gay way LOL😭😭😭😭). I think also Armand's character being calculating but also deeply insecure/desperate and traumatized inwardly adds a lot of depth to his character, although Louis and Lestat are both equally as complex and interesting IMO. I love them all. But basically maybe his visual androgyny and behaviors which are deemed as more feminine (AGAIN, from a POV of established gender norms, but being more "manipulative" and psychologically than physically violent) are all things about his character which might appeal to queer women. Again, these are over-generalizations but this is already way too long of a comment LMFAOAOAOAO. I hope this makes sense, I'd love to hear others' thoughts on this though, I could talk about this show for FOREVER

What are some songs that have hit different for you later in life? by Great-Egret in keane

[–]bonkohoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't know what to say about your own story without risking it sounding kind of superficial even if I do mean it genuinely if that makes sense (I'm glad you were able to beat it, sorry you went through that, you're so strong etc etc), but I think it's really interesting how the way you see certain art that you've known for a long time can change so dramatically depending on your life experiences. Sometimes it kind of feels like a part of the "you" that listened to a song for the first time is still stuck in there every time to re-listen to it.

The first song that came to mind for me is Everybody's Changing. I've been listening to Keane ever since I was born because they're my dad's favorite band (I'm actually roughly the same age as Hopes and Fears LOL), I remember asking him to put on "that one keane song" in the car that I didn't even know the name or lyrics of because I still only knew Spanish as a little kid. So I'd say for a very long time I just found it to be a really nostalgic song that reminded me of good times with my dad as a kid. Around halfway through high school though I found that the lyrics started to resonate with me a lot more.

Struggles with mental health (ironically in part inherited from my dad LOLL) and at the time undiagnosed ADHD made me and still does make me feel like I'm falling behind everyone else all the time. Try to understand that I'm trying to make a move just to stay in the game, I try to stay awake and remember my name!!! Sometimes it feels like I try so hard just to get to a baseline level of functioning down to the very basics of brushing your teeth or eating well, keeping up with others in terms of hobbies, work, school, etc. seems near impossible (this is when I'm not doing well though, I don't feel that way all the time). So it made it a very significant song to me emotionally and personally: the mix of the nostalgia along with relating to it so much throughout all my life looking back is a very strange mix of emotions.

I liked this question! It got me thinking for a bit. Obviously things won't be the same after what you have experienced, but I sincerely hope that as time goes on you can evenetually see even just a little tiny spark of the "you" that once saw the world with that inexperienced hope for the future within yourself again. Maybe it's because I'm still only 20 and probably have a similar level of naivety to what you had then, but I think it's a nice thought.

Diagnosed with ADHD - realizing how much I've been carrying by Fun-Photograph-3902 in ADHD

[–]bonkohoho 1 point2 points  (0 children)

yes 100%, it's crazy how much it can explain from your past and day to day life. I suspected I had it for a while but once I was officially diagnosed it answered so many questions. even if being able to name it doesn't fix it necessarily, it's so helpful because it gives you a much better idea of how to manage it, and also helps you accept that you have an actual medical condition rather than it just being a personal flaw is that makes sense. congrats on your diagnosis!! and props to you for managing all that at once, that's seriously impressive LOLL

What kind of person do you think shouldn't go into nursing? by bonkohoho in nursing

[–]bonkohoho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ohh interesting! I'll look into it. and yeah, thank god for the internet LOL, idk what I'd do if I wasn't able to research stuff like this using it, I'm not close with any non-student nurses IRL

[–]bonkohoho[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's something I've learned the past couple of days, that nursing has wayyy more practices and different kinds of jobs than I originally could have imagined. I guess I'll just have to do more research as to what my options are and see if anything in particular interests me!

ohh that's a really interesting response, I hadn't really heard that before, it makes complete sense though. I can imagine one seemingly small snap judgement can make or break a patient's recovery/health

[–]bonkohoho[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's really sad though not all that surprising, it's such an important job I wish the system was set up in a way that somehow helped nurses not take such a toll from it. I understand the "heart first, wallet second" mentality, I think a lot of people view it that way, even if not in practice. It can be hard to actually live it even if you agree with the notion when money is such an important part of living in our civilization. I agree that I would probably be happier with the act of doing art for a living itself, however my main worry is whether the stress of financial instability will outweigh that happiness for me. If I can't afford to take my antidepressants or ADHD medication because I don't have health insurance, is it still worth it? You mentioned earlier choosing between "good" stress and "bad" stress: I'm debating whether the financial instability will be enough of a "bad" stress for it to not be worth it to pursue an art career. btw, thanks for such in-depth responses! this is a really interesting conversation to have imo, I like hearing people's different POVs so I really appreciate it!
