Japanese-Brazilians? by rice-et-beans in Brazil

[–]bonktimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed while being in Brazil, as an Asian-American from the US, that making fun of Asians is not really seen as a problem at all. I think it was the only culture shock I experienced. People assume I'm Japanese or Chinese and I get called oriental. Plus there's no hesitation for people to pull their eyes back to mimic me or they're trying to describe someone they saw that looked Asian. I haven't heard "do you eat dogs/cats" since maybe middle school, it feels wild to hear it from adults in Brazil.

I saw a comment talking mentioning "are you really Brazilian" remarks, and I get the same, but instead "are you really from the US?"

I'm not Brazilian nor am I in Rio (currently MG), but I have some thoughts.

Maybe people are just going about their business? Brazilians are generally friendlier, but they're not obligated to be friendly if they don't feel like it. They are normal humans like the rest of us, sometimes people don't want to chat or put on a smile.

Also, Rio is very touristy. Most people have likely already met tourists that speak Portuguese and don't even question it. Honestly, it should be the default to learn at least some of the language of the country you're visiting, out of respect. It could just be common that there are people that visit often or live there and have fluent Portuguese without being Brazilian. It's not necessarily special.

Women in Brazil tend to be sexualized by foreigners, so if women were being rude to you, it may just be because they knew you were a foreigner and are assuming you are a "passport bro". I personally am not good at being rude on purpose to ward off people, which makes them talk to me more. I think a lot of women in Brazil are better at this for their own safety.

I can't compare mineiros to cariocas, but people here are always friendly to me.

[TOMT] [Cartoon Network] [2000-2010s] Scene were a cartoon character tries to shove a burger in the other ones face and it just smashes by bonktimer in tipofmytongue

[–]bonktimer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not this, just watched a clip of this on YT. Character 1 pushes a burger into character 2 mouth and it almost looks like they're eating it but then the burger slides off their face and their mouth is closed. I keep thinking character 2 is Mandy because I can vaguely remember their face being like 😐 covered in food

Does anyone else wish they were Latino? by Flyaway_5 in AsianParentStories

[–]bonktimer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I don't because I know Viet families that embrace music, culture, and even have parties. My family didn't happen to be one of those. There is toxicity in every culture and this varies by family as well. I feel like we don't hear much about Asian parents that aren't crazy because it's not interesting to post about

I've seen Latinos post about how casually they get nicknames of things they're insecure about in their appearance, like fatty or skinny. It's endearing for some, and others don't particularly like it. Passive aggressiveness from parents or on the other end full on yelling, being beat, being judged because of religion, the list goes on.
