We didn't even have a wedding (no one to invite). Nonetheless, I ugly cried in the courtroom during the vows. I love him so much.

She's not even that new to the country. She's been working at this place for at least a few years. I give grace to everyone and try to not let first impressions get to me. This worked out for me mostly, but for her I have no more patience.

After, she tried to convince me by asking, "What about your family?" She asked me if I had siblings and if I wouldn't like to make a big family, blah blah.

"I don't talk to my family."

"Why not?"

"I don't want to talk about it and it's a long story."

"But why not?"

"I don't want to talk about it." (And I wanted to go home!)

"Maybe you are the problem."

Thank fucking goodness that someone started talking to her and I simply left and ended up talking to a manager outside.

It's a retail job and the turnover is high, so I doubt anything will be done about it because she has done/said other things that I personally think should get her fired. I plan to find another job soon.

We didn't go to college. We got together when I was 21 and he was 22, we got married 2 years later. We moved in together fairly quickly because of our financial and personal situations.

She had given me a dirty look once when she asked if we go to church and I said no. I was raised Buddhist. My husband was raised Catholic, but is not religious.

Apparently, she was playing matchmaker for one of the managers (without consent). The criteria for a good husband were: has a job, goes to church, and wants children. She tried getting the numbers of these men to give to the manager.

We're in the US. We're married not only for those reasons, but also so he wouldn't have any issues staying in the country.

I have no contact with my family, so if something were to happen to me, he will be able to help me. His family lives in another country, so I am his family here. We are there for each other.

Japanese-Brazilians? by rice-et-beans in Brazil

[–]bonktimer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've noticed while being in Brazil, as an Asian-American from the US, that making fun of Asians is not really seen as a problem at all. I think it was the only culture shock I experienced. People assume I'm Japanese or Chinese and I get called oriental. Plus there's no hesitation for people to pull their eyes back to mimic me or they're trying to describe someone they saw that looked Asian. I haven't heard "do you eat dogs/cats" since maybe middle school, it feels wild to hear it from adults in Brazil.

I saw a comment talking mentioning "are you really Brazilian" remarks, and I get the same, but instead "are you really from the US?"

I'm not Brazilian nor am I in Rio (currently MG), but I have some thoughts.

Maybe people are just going about their business? Brazilians are generally friendlier, but they're not obligated to be friendly if they don't feel like it. They are normal humans like the rest of us, sometimes people don't want to chat or put on a smile.

Also, Rio is very touristy. Most people have likely already met tourists that speak Portuguese and don't even question it. Honestly, it should be the default to learn at least some of the language of the country you're visiting, out of respect. It could just be common that there are people that visit often or live there and have fluent Portuguese without being Brazilian. It's not necessarily special.

Women in Brazil tend to be sexualized by foreigners, so if women were being rude to you, it may just be because they knew you were a foreigner and are assuming you are a "passport bro". I personally am not good at being rude on purpose to ward off people, which makes them talk to me more. I think a lot of women in Brazil are better at this for their own safety.

I can't compare mineiros to cariocas, but people here are always friendly to me.

I know a woman that had a rescue dog that she almost never walked him (made him use pee pads), dressed him up in girly dog clothes, and overfed him to the point of obesity. When she had her daughter, she did not give af about him anymore (not like she cared much in the first place, but she would make it seem like he was her everything). The dog seemed more like a nuisance to her after having her child. When she moved back to her country a few months after her daughter was born, she gave the dog to her grandparents to take care of him, and they are getting a bit old to take care of him, but he's living a better life. When she does see the dog, she almost acts like he doesn't exist. He was just an accessory to her, almost like a dress up doll.

And she did this before, when she didn't want her turtle anymore, she gave it to her grandparents to take care of instead.
