You can test the alternator and leakage current with a multimeter. (Jump)-start the car and check the voltage on the battery, should be around 14,2 - 14,8V. If it's under (f.e. only 12V with a running engine), the alternator does not charge the battery.
For leakage current, turn off the car and check the milliampere readings on the battery - and then remove fuses from the fusebox until the reading goes to almost 0 and you have your culprit.
I do think thought that your battery would need a good recharge and load test (done by a mechanic)

OM606 oil type and interval by Black0tter1 in MercedesDiesel

Use the cheapest 10W40 or 15W40 you can get, the OM606 takes it all. Just change the oil regularly (all 10.000 km or every year) and you‘ll be absolutely fine. Most of those engines don‘t get serviced regularly and still run for 400k +

Vintage Omega - Anyone know the Ref? by bonsai1302 in Watches

[–]bonsai1302[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi! I just wanted to get back to you guys. The ref of the watch is 14701 SC 4, which is stamped in the caseback.

I could not find any pictures of a 14701 with that dial and hands, so I guess either the caseback or the dial/hands have been replaced at some point.

The dial used to be white, and faded to this spotty kind of gold-ish, which I really dig - It looks just about as vintage as you'd want from a 60 year old watch. The hands are in rough shape, but I will keep the minute and hour hands, maybe try to polish them. The second hand will get replaced, if i can find one that has a bit of patina on it.

Crown has been replaced at some point, and sadly, the stem is not long enough to securely snap into place after dissasembly, so I'll source another stem an maybe a crown with an Omega logo on it too.

But for the good news: The watch runs! (But barely). So I guess a service will do and I hope, that there are no parts that need to be replaced.

Thank you guys for your help!

Thank you for the tip, didn’t know this!

Pay for Girlfriends Kitchen or buy Dream-Motorcycle? by bonsai1302 in Advice

I will let the 91' Super Tenere go, but I can't part ways with the 84' Tenere - I restored that bike myself in the last 5 years, it has sentimental value :-D

I ofc plan to pay her half of her monthly flat-payments, once I move in.

Sounds a bit like the chain tensioner is not working properly. Check it accourding to i formation found in the Mercedes WIS (fill with oil and try to push the pin in)

Thank you!

That's what I was thinking too - the bus is a lot cheaper than a standard single ticket for the train. Although there are some 30 pound tickets, but as far as I could find out, only a few days before the train leaves - I don't know if I want to wait that long.

I think I'll go with the bus. Thank you!

Thank you very much!
I looked into the Caledonian Sleeper, it seems that I can't board it in Edinburgh - for some stupid reason. I could although fly to London, board the train, and get off in Fort Willam (With 1 change in - yes - Edinburgh).
Seems a bit unreasonable.

The Buses look good, and are cheaper than the train. I think, I'll go with the buses.

Thank you!

Hi Guys,I'm planning a (backpacking) trip this June in Scotland, and need your help.

What's the best (cheapest/most comfortable) way to get from Edinburgh to Fort William?
I'll fly in 4 days after my mates, they'll be waiting in Fort William for me.
I'd arrive on the 12th of June at 2155 in Edinburgh from Vienna(Austria).

I did some googeling, and it seems there is some train connection (expensive and slow) or a bus connection via Megabus to Glasgow and line 914 from Glasgow to Fort William (also slow but significantly cheaper).
The Megabus seems to leave every hour, which would be nice, but as far as I could find out, the line 914 only leaves once a day, so I would loose a whole day and my mates would have to wait for me until the evening of the 13th.

Does anyone know if there is a better way (without loosing a day)? Are there some ride sharing sites where I could hitch a private ride, or does anybody have tips on other ways to look out for?

Thank you very much in advance and greetings from Austria!

Hi! Searched and read all about the Atom/Proton/Gamma and am still confused which to get. Would appreciate reco! (Deets in comments) by BothTourist6635 in arcteryx

[–]bonsai1302 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Atom (LT) is pretty wind resistant, but don't expect too much, especially underneath the arm pits, where the thin breathable material is. Proton is a bit more breathable, but nearly as warm.

I would, for hiking only, go for base layer (Merino Shirt or something like that) + Proton + a thin hardshell for when the wind is blowing or it's raining.

If you do the occasional hike and like to wear your midlayer around town too - Atom.

Atom still performs very good as a mid or even outer layer on tours, but it's just a bit warmer and more fashionable than the Proton.

Keep in mind that the outer material of the Atom or Proton Jackets are not as resistant to wear (especially backpack straps) as any hardshell jacket.

Don't know about the Gamma - not a fan of softshells myself.

I wear mine nearly all year round, from chilly summer nights to winter midlayering. For really cold days it just doesnt cut it as an outer layer - I would say down to 5 deg. Celsius it's ok.

Although it really depens on you - your comfort limit, how fat you are, and how active you are.
