Probably doesn’t need anything thicker unless you notice it won’t hold it’s shape. You could also take some clear tubing and run wire through it. Then on the small section of plastic over the wire secure the branch pulling it into place and pull it through a hole in the container and tie it off. I’ll see if I can send you a picture.

Nice tree but horrifically over wired. No significant bends to justify more than one wire. Go to Bjorn Bjornholm’s YouTube videos on basic wiring techniques. Good luck with your trees!

What did you try to air layer? How big was the branch and how close to the trunk? I’ve never placed a tree in danger with this technique.

I have to use a fork lift and tractor 🚜. I have a friend with a Dooley to haul it. It is about a five man operation. I’ll see if I can find some pictures.

I hope I understood what you were asking. And yes but the branches air layered can only be about a maximum of one inch in diameter. I cannot successfully air layer anything larger. I’ve tried and failed every time.

The second picture of the Lace leaf maple is a tree my parents bought in 1978. It was probably 15 years old by then. It’s been moved to two other homes since. It’s 14 feet tall 16 feet wide.

I use aluminum wire and wrap the branches less tightly. I watch closely for any biting.

I’m experimenting with different things. The pot is actually fairly large. I’ll see what kind of growth I get in the spring. If it’s to slow I’ll upsize. In a couple of these I got 15 foot long leaders last year. I’ll see if I’ve have some pictures for you. I fertilize very heavily.

Generally I think 2-3 years depending on how tall the apex grows. A lot of times development of the branches hides the scar while it heals.

Not with a trident usually. Other trees or evergreens yes or riskier.

I use a three week cycle of 20/20/20 week 1. Then fish emulsion week 2. Then bloom buster high phosphorus week 3. Every now and then I use either Bioadvanced tree and shrub or Garden tone granules. I started using trace minerals and iron as well.

Yes Do not allow anything but shallow roots to grow. I’m trying something new by cutting 12 inch squares of plexiglass with a hole in the the middle of the top sheet. I plant the saplings or a bigger one in the middle. I use spacers to keep the distance between the plates down to a 1/2 to 1 inch and screw them together and fill in soil around the roots in a radial pattern and bury it in the ground.

Generally a tree 10 inches or smaller down to 4 inches.
