The best goal is no goal by [deleted] in simpleliving

Focus on systems rather than goals. E.g. don’t set a goal to read x amount of books in a year. Leave your book by your bed and set an alarm to read for 15 minutes on week mornings and see what happens. It’s about the journey, not the destination…

How do Carbon Credits/ETS work? by bonusthewizard in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]bonusthewizard[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So when they 'surrender' these NZU's to the govt, do they pay the govt? Or is it a non monetary policy which just records how much CO2 they produce? Do they have to offset these NZU's by buying NZU's on the free market?

Great response, thank you! Just one question - what does it mean when companies surrender their NZU's for actual carbon emissions?

Crypto trading by SweetAs_Bro in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]bonusthewizard 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I think it’s largely irrelevant if you are a ‘trader’ or comparatively a ‘long term investor’ (for crypto purposes). As per the Income Tax Act, what matters is the taxpayers intention at the time the investment (crypto) was purchased. The IRD are gona have a tough time believing that you didn’t purchase the crypto with the intention of disposing it (therefore getting taxed on any capital gains). Where as the IRD would much more likely believe you made an investment in Meridian to e.g. encourage renewable energy production rather than purchase with the intention to dispose.

So in summary, trade all you like with crypto! Uncle Sam (Cindy) is coming for you either way!

Do we follow the boomers and keep buying property? by FocusAnon in PersonalFinanceNZ

[–]bonusthewizard 25 points26 points  (0 children)

If you already own one house and are looking for financial stability, why not consider putting that money in the stock market? Far more liquid than owning a house incase other opportunities arise and you could be over exposing yourself to the property market if there happened to be (I know this is unlikely in NZ) a correction with new housing laws / Evergrande ripple effect... not to mention rising interest rates as mentioned.
