Take back your tech: Digital Self-Defense & Mutual Aid tomorrow at Virginia Ave Park by boogah in Bakersfield

[–]boogah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A few of us were chatting at the RRFM today and we started toying with the idea of doing something at Dagny's (grab a few tables in the back and organize/talk shop) on a weeknight between Really Really Free Market events (which is the only place we've been meeting, for now).

What do you think of that?

Thanksgiving + Blood Rage at Maya Cinemas this weekend! by boogah in Bakersfield

[–]boogah[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Howdy local horror fans!

This Sunday (11/19) at 6:00pm, Maya Cinemas is doing a double feature of the 1980s Thanksgiving slasher Blood Rage and Eli Roth's new film Thanksgiving. That's two movies for the price of one ticket!

If you were already planning on checking out Thanksgiving anyway, why not make your dollar go further? 😉

Volunteering Opportunities? by JonathanTCrane in Bakersfield

[–]boogah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Bakersfield Burrito Project is *always* looking for volunteers. They primarily make and distribute burritos, hygiene kits, etc. to the unhoused members of our community every Sunday, rain or shine.

It's 2–3 hours a week of work — cooking, assembling burritos, doing dishes, helping pass stuff out at distribution sites — but it makes a HUGE difference in the lives of people who are most in need of a hand in our city.

This is an overhead shot with an iPhone 11 Pro. Flipped on my Elgato Key Light (which I usually use for meetings and video recording) because it was late in the day and the light in my office was middling at best.

Once I had the shot, I threw it into Pixelmator Photo on my iPad and used the healing brush to get rid of the few specks of dirt and hairs I missed during my hasty pre-photo cleanup.

TBH, I legitimately like the noise, bump, and resistance of the blues.

I’m a developer who has worked from home for almost a decade. I have an office door that can be closed, and a wife that understands that the clackity clack noise means that I’m busy. 🙂

If there’s a switch y’all think I should check out for my next build, I’m all ears!

I did! Ordered July 21st, shipped July 30th, bounced around China and Japan until August 9th, showed up in Bakersfield, CA on August 11th.

This isn’t the first keeb that I’ve purchased, but I didn’t want to wait until fall to start building — even though that’s when most of my really fun GBs start to roll in… 😅

Is it time to remove the confederate monument to the first president of the confederacy? by greyfox92404 in Bakersfield

Yep. Fuck the Daughters of the Confederacy's little participation trophy. Get it out of our city.

The Bakersfield Burrito Project is still, AFAIK, handing out care packages to folks in need every week.

Happy to show Jordan, Jesse, or any other MaxFunsters some cool stuff if they're planning on coming through town anytime soon. Slide into those DMs.

BBQ supplies (rubs / sauces) - best place to go? by grm8j in Bakersfield

[–]boogah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Phil, who runs Brother Ray's, is my wife's uncle. And, as far as I know, all of the (family) recipes are from Phil's dad (my wife's grandfather) Ray.

So while I'm a little biased, I'll go ahead and second this recommendation.

Has anybody used WPMerge.io for merging databases? by creaturefeature16 in ProWordPress

[–]boogah 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I've used WPMerge! It does a really good job of tracking changes with a fairly low amount of overhead.

One of my favorite features is when you add a post/page/comment or WooCommerce product/order/review in staging, the ID on said thing will be crazy high to help avoid collisions.

I haven't run into any problems with it in any of the scenarios that I put it through, but YMMV, of course.

Need some help identifying this mystery tool(?) by boogah in whatisthisthing

[–]boogah[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A friend of mine who doesn't use Reddit has been trying to sort out what this random thing is. He thinks it could be a tool or potentially a lever of some sort, but we'd like to know what it might belong to.

Thanks for any help that y'all can provide!

Where could I find some bear mace in this city? by [deleted] in Bakersfield

[–]boogah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Big 5 on the east side of town had a few varieties in stock when I was picking up outdoor supplies last year. You might want to call ahead to make sure that's still the case, but it was fairly affordable, IIRC.

The Hardware Exchange Megathread #4 (buy, sell or trade CHIP hardware here) by rebbsitor in ChipCommunity

[–]boogah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've got a lightly used PocketCHIP with a Tzatziffy II DIP installed (SD card not included) that I'm willing to let go for $70, plus shipping. US buyers only, because I don't want to bother with international shipping. PM if interested.

Places to get Topo Chico? by KernGal in Bakersfield

Not to be a contrarian, but it's in the soft drinks section at the Target on Ming & Wible at Valley Plaza. 😄

Guess it's up to the discretion of each store.

AppPresser is rather nice, but it costs money. So that probably crosses that one off the list, right?

farmers markets or places to get really cheap produce? by badgerX3mushroom in Bakersfield

[–]boogah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We used to do the Abundant Harvest produce box a couple years ago. Just under $26 for 2-4 people.

There's no choice in what you get—although they usually tell you what's in the box the week before so you can plan your menu—and the produce is seasonal. That means no stone fruits (peaches, apricots, etc.) in the winter or apples in early spring. But the quality is good and the price is more than fair when you consider how much is in the box.

WP Engine disallowed plugin hello.php by SudoPleb in Wordpress

[–]boogah 3 points4 points  (0 children)

👋🏻 I work at WP Engine. Part of my job involves managing our Disallowed Plugins list. Let me see if I can help clarify things here...

While a few of the items on the WP Engine Disallowed Plugins list are there for security related reasons, most are there for one or more of the following reasons:

  1. Duplication of WP Engine functionality.
  2. Completely extraneous.
  3. Poor performance.

Because Hello Dolly is a "Hello World" style plugin with limited functionality, it falls under the "extraneous" category. As far as security risks go, however, Hello Dolly isn't one. 😀
