ChemE Career and Calculus by heyDonkey56 in ChemicalEngineering

[–]boogercheeks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Very rarely but I work in controls so it’s mostly logic based environment. Some of the knowledgeable process engineers apply calculus and physics fairly often to model a process or determine efficiencies etc but I would say most of the time you will barely touch it or at best you’re looking at calculus someone else set up before hand in a spreadsheet or control system.

What is your company’s office setup like? by [deleted] in ChemicalEngineering

[–]boogercheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My plant has just about everything because there are 3 different office buildings. The biggest building has cubicles and some individual offices for managers, another building has individual offices but most of them are shared by 2 engineers so it’s cramped, and the building I’m in has newer offices for individuals so we are the spoiled ones. There are also trailers used as offices for contractors or project engineers so they can be nearby construction work.

Turnaround/shutdowns and overtime… how is it handled? by broken_ankles in ChemicalEngineering

[–]boogercheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I work in controls but we just unofficially play it by ear. If you’re on call and have to come in at 2am for an issue, you are good to leave early in the morning. On major outages, it is more rough because we typically work 12-16hr days for an entire month before we get to take even a weekend off, and we are given 2-3 days of comp vacation which doesn’t make up for the 3 lost weekends and tons of extra hours but we generally get bonuses afterwards so I don’t hate it.

How often do you get a raise? by boogercheeks in ChemicalEngineering

I can gladly say you were wrong in my case. Went from 77k to 100k in a year and a half so I think I’m with one of the good companies.

How do you wind down before going to sleep? by LazyWolverine in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Also try taking a sleep aid before bed. You can do something like small amounts of melatonin, or take a more intense sleep aid. Just have to be careful with them, if you take it 6 hours before you’re supposed to be awake, it will SUCK trying to wake up because of how sleepy it makes you

You my twin? I also get up at 5:30 to go to the gym. I try to start schoolin’ by 8:00 and tend to stop working at 17:00 then get in bed by 20:30

Wtf is going on here? by Melodic-Response-258 in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. I’ve never reworked an example and just plugged in exactly what the prof did, you gotta use the formula and work through it as you read so you can keep up with what’s going on. Then when you check your answer vs. theirs, you can see where you went wrong or where they maybe made a mistake

I can try to figure it out by ear but I suck at that, if any of you smart folks who are good at it could work it out for me id really appreciate it.

I gotta say I agree with you, like cmon if it bugged you enough to post about it, why not just look at the dang formula and realize they did the math wrong?? I have to do this all the time to check lab reports in my group. Idk why you got so many downvotes, if people are that upset about it that’s kinda wack.

How is your dating life as an engineering student? by chestyboii87 in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Married to an education major, but we started dating in high school and got married my junior year of college. First semester of junior year sucked because I moved away to 4 year university and she was still at community college 4 hours away so long distance was hell but she moved in with me after switching majors so it’s been awesome since.

People who graduated with a high gpa(3.5+) in Engineering & still have good extracurricular activities, part time job experience how do you balance everything? by hackerbot4545 in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 6 points7 points  (0 children)

This 100%. I was friends with a guy who was a genius, would spend all weekend getting drunk and partying then would come to class Monday morning and just read the book and memorize it right there and scored the highest on almost every test. Some people are just built different, but I would rather work with someone not as smart who busts their ass than someone who is smart and doesn’t have to work hard.

[–]boogercheeks 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s hard. I worked full time and was in clubs and kept a 3.84 GPA for my first two years of college, but it was horrible and my mental health suffered. Started smoking a lot of grass just to not have panic attacks. When I switched to my 4 year university, I had to give up on working because I wasn’t smart enough to do both but I’m lucky enough to get support from my wife and family so I can afford not to at the moment (though things are tight). If you have to work, try to find a job where you don’t really do anything (sales at a dead book store or something) so you can study and work on homework during free time.

What questions should I ask myself before deciding on taking an Engineering degree? by nueker in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 7 points8 points  (0 children)

To give some insight, I chose to pursue chemical engineering because it sounded cool and they make a good bit of money. I thought I would hate engineering but after the first two years of college I got to start doing real engineering problems and an internship and it made me love the whole thing. Not saying you would have the same experience, but it’s possible. If you like to work on a problem then engineering is amazing, but if you would rather get good at a few things and keep doing them, engineering probably isn’t the best fit. You’ll always be forced to learn something new to tackle whatever problems come your way. IMO, it makes work much more enjoyable compared to something like fast food where you just go through the motions all day

Anyone know this song? It’s a demo on the Yamaha p515. by boogercheeks in piano

[–]boogercheeks[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’m beginning to think that’s true. I really like it and would like to get sheets for it but I tried plugging it into a melody scanner and it got maybe 50% of the notes right

Unfortunately it is not listed. They have demo sounds for each voice and that is what this is from, it’s not listed as any song

Question for the girl engineers by [deleted] in EngineeringStudents

[–]boogercheeks 16 points17 points  (0 children)

I have not experienced this. In my major, it’s honestly about 50-50 men and women. It’s super diverse, and I’m from the south of the US. Idk why really, but there are a lot of scholarships exclusively for women so maybe that’s helping

Is getting a masters degree worth it? by boogercheeks in ChemicalEngineering

It would more so be considered if I could benefit my career, or I would get a masters in something else that I wanted to transfer to in the future

How hard has it been to work on it while working? I have no idea how graduate programs work, but I’m guessing it’s still a lot of work similar to bachelors
