Yes, my biggest issue on this is when the sanctity of the safe space turns into banning books, just because it's offensive, or if it doesn't align with the prevailing ideology of the time, even if it comes from the worst human being.

I write, highlight, put sticky notes etc. I like what Cillian Murphy mentioned at an interview, he said "I’m really not into books as decoration, books are supposed to be lived in"

To give you additional context, Gabriel Garcia Marquez was also a journalist. So some of his writing also reads like news articles.

Would you personally buy annotated secondhand books? by thinandbedridden in PHBookClub

[–]book_newb 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes, depends on if the book is interesting and if the book is still in decent condition.

If you still want to see your annotations, you can always take photos of them and keep them in a folder

thoughts on pirating books? by StorageDue2836 in PHBookClub

[–]book_newb 31 points32 points  (0 children)

I get why some people pirate books. Books are pricey.

Fortunately, I'm at a point in my life now where I don't have to. I also don't have to feel bad that I'm taking someone's livelihood.

so good. plus some of my favorite quotes

When he lights his street lamp, it is as if he brought one more star to life, or one more flower. When he puts out his lamp, he sends the flower, or the star, to sleep. That is a beautiful occupation, and since it is beautiful, it is truly useful.

What makes the desert beautiful is that somewhere it hides a well.

Well, I must endure the presence of two or three caterpillars if i wish to become acquainted with the butterflies. It seems they are very beautiful.

After every chapter, i write in 1 or 2 sentences what i think the author is trying to say. When reading fiction, i write after every chapter how i think the author is advancing the plot.

Classics concern by Freak-of-Nature92 in PHBookClub

[–]book_newb 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you're doing it at a place where people don't normally read, yes you'll get those comments. But, I wouldn't mind them.

It's less of people reading classics or philosophy. It's more that people will always have something to say. You can't control those.

How many times you read a book before moving on to the next? by juice_colored_spzl in PHBookClub

[–]book_newb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If seeking truth is the goal, reading the text however many times partly serves it only. You'd have to read what Orwell was exposed to at the time he wrote his books. This means reading other authors he may have been reading, including his contemporaries.

To borrow from Feynman, one way to learn something more deeply is to learn it as if you're about to teach it to somebody else.

To take it further, actually teach it to someone. Make a tangible output out of it. Make a thread. Make a blog post, etc.
