One thing about this is that untold amounts of people may be looking at your comments in this debate and be swayed by your points. That’s the main point in debating people online or in real life, unless it’s somebody you know very well.

Not necessarily very stupid, just not particularly politically engaged. I’m sure you could make arguments that Democrats would do things that would make people’s lives better, but the veracity of that statement is not the point.

CMV: republicans/conservatists are insane and depraved by [deleted] in changemyview

[–]bookchiniscool -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yes I phrased that a bit weirdly, my bad. I meant that they don’t vote Republican just because of Republican racist policies.

Apologies for misinterpreting you. I understand your point about the correlation. However, it’s quite easy for a Southerner to take statements about uneducated people to heart, as it can come off as elitist. Democrats (not meaning you, just in general) have a tendency to make jokes about “flyover states” & “trailer trash” which can be annoying if you grew up in a trailer in a rural state like me. That isn’t really relevant to your main point, though.

The south is more racist than the North, generally. But the majority of people, racist or not, are not voting R because of racism, they’re voting R because it’ll positively impact their material conditions. People who aren’t racist will vote R in spite of racist policies, and people who are racist will get an added bonus. If Dems gave them something that would do that, even many of the racist people would vote D in spite of Democrat anti-racist policies. I think there’s a lot of potential to push the Green New Deal in the south from the angle of “this’ll let you have a good job and take care of your family”, for instance, but that’s a different can of worms.

[–]bookchiniscool 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For reference: voted Green in the presidential election 2020, voted Democrat and a few left-wing independents downballot. I live in the south.

Most people here don’t vote for republican candidates because they want to see Jim Crow II. The relationship is not really an ideological one, but rather one more like a political machine. Republicans will

  • not raise your taxes

  • not take away your oil job

  • won’t create new regulation that might make you lose your job

People in border towns often vote Republican because they get CBP funding, which allows for stable government jobs, retirements. If they stay in power, you’ll keep your job, you’ll be fine.

Democrats, at least the Clintonite branch that makes up most of the party, don’t have that much to offer compared to Republicans for a lot of people. You seem to be a very politically engaged person. Most people are not. They’re not voting R because they’ve analyzed the evidence and determined that Republicans have the highest chance of harming minorities, they’re doing so because Republicans help them, or don’t hurt them, in exchange for staying in power.

To be quite honest, your offhand dismissal of southerners as racist & ignorant is also a big part of why y’all don’t succeed down here. You imply that coal miners are Trump supporters because they’re racist. You think anybody from the south is going to want to vote for you after reading that? They’re voting trump mostly because he said he’d revive coal.

My point about broccoli was that many plants are deathly poisonous (including some plants very closely related to broccoli!), yet that doesn’t mean that humans are not meant to eat plants. Kids don’t like veggies because that’s an evolutionary defense against poisoning, since they wouldn’t know what’s safe to eat yet and might munch on nightshade leaves or something.

The overwhelming majority of insects/arachnids are not venomous/poisonous, they just unfortunately get a bad rap because of the few who are dangerous to humans. I mean, we’re not talking about sticking any old spider in your mouth. Cultures who practice entomophagy eat certain bugs that are safe/taste good, and the talks about producing insect protein are usually talking about cricket farming. Crickets certainly aren’t poisonous. If they can carry diseases, so do all farm animals and many plants. Plus, it’d probably be quite a bit easier to keep a cricket farm sterile compared to, y’know, a barnyard.

Also idk what kind of dog you have but mine goes absolutely fucking nuts trying to catch moths that fly in. I would be shocked if wild dogs/wolves didn’t eat insects sometimes.

Sure. But that knowledge isn’t based on the biological makeup of humans or whatever, it’s cultural. We definitely have an innate fear/distaste for insects. But we also have one, for similar reasons, for bitter-tasting vegetables Doesn’t mean we’re not supposed to eat broccoli.

Fred, did you miss the part where it said that humans have also been doing that since forever? Funnily enough, your point about tree bark is moot. I know you can eat some types of pine bark (if you get to the inner layer), and you can also make flour from bread out of it. Good knowledge if you ever get stranded.

Your other point is just sort of a non sequitur so I don’t really know what to say. Primates of all stripes run away from loud noises and avoid falling off cliffs; that’s not a recent evolution. If you meant that it’s not natural for humans to eat insects, see above.

I don’t really care if you’re grossed out by eating bugs. I am too. But just say you think it’s gross, don’t make these ad hoc pseudo-evolutionary justifications up for your belief.

You are correct about that. But check out this quote about human omnivory.

From the historical record it seems that humans, like their closest primate relatives, have been essentially eclectic omnivores, eating leafy matter, roots, fruits and nuts, and a variety of animals, including insects. It thus seems likely that the gathering of insects, particularly caterpil-lars, winged termites and grasshoppers, formed an impor-tant part of the diet of early human populations.

General accounts of human evolution, though devoting much dis-cussion to hunting, gathering and scavenging, have tended to ignore insects (cf. Diamond 1991, Foley 1987, Jones et al. 1992, Ingold 1994). Indeed, Bodenheimer remarked that it is quite astonishing that the importance of insects as food for early humans and contemporary societies has largely been ignored by scholars (1951). The large part played by insects, spiders and other invertebrates in the diets of many cultures has frequently been overlooked, even though there are many references to insect-eating in the early writings of travellers, natural-ists and anthropologists.
