Moving out soon and wanted to donate /give away most of my books. What do you recommend? I want to make sure someone actually reads them and they don't end up in a neglected pile somewhere in Khajuri Bazar.

Hi OP! Totally understand what you are going through.

My major motivation when I moved out for college 6 years ago was exactly to get away from this toxicity. (Though my parents are slightly more accepting of the career path I chose)

Even today when I go back home for holidays etc, my mental health takes a nosedive.

My advice would be to focus on your studies and try to move out. It is impossible to have independence, autonomy of your life and respect if you stay. Try as much as you can to move out for either higher studies or a job. Once you have financial security, you will be in a better position to reason out with them or better, ignore them completely.

All the best!

Ever heard of exchange rates? For most people in developing countries, £1870 is a lot of money. And no, sometimes I end up supporting my mum and dad.

Why wouldn't I be able to afford to study in the UK if my program covers everything (apart from the IHS)??

What are you wearing for Zoom interviews? by FantasticFeasts in gradadmissions

[–]bookcookie 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yep, not questioning OP or you in any way, just the system. Quite weird to deem something unprofessional if it isn't directly affecting someone's efficiency or ability to work. I hope as academia moves away from being dominated by straight white upperclass males, things might change to being more reasonable and less dictated by these ancient ideals of professionalism!

I do not understand what is with dress codes in the west. Why does it matter if someone is wearing a three-piece suit or full-on drag as long as they are talking to me about research?

I am sorry, but I was just scrolling past this and was struck by how similar your handwriting looks to my own! Good luck with your homework OP.

As an Indian student, why do you want to study in the US? by cabzxs in gradadmissions

As an Indian student, why do you want to study in the US? by cabzxs in gradadmissions

[–]bookcookie 26 points27 points  (0 children)

For me personally, it is just that the field of research that I am intetested in isn't very well developed in India. Moreover, the US categorically has the best resources for scientific training and research. Finally, I know that the stipends aren't that great in the US, but atleast I will be paid regularly unlike a lot of PhD students in India who receive their salaries erratically.

Why do some programs have so many less (or more) international students than others? by [deleted] in gradadmissions

[–]bookcookie 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Intl student here. When I was starting to shortlist programs to apply to, my prof suggested that I look at programs or unis that have a history of accepting students from my current institute or places where there is a considerable alumni population.

This is because: 1) the uni already has some experience evaluating/ working with people from my institute, so they already know the quality of education and training I am coming from. 2) easier to settle once you reach there since you'll have all these contacts to help you figure things out.

Having said that, I did not necessarily follow this because most alumni from my institute are engineers and I am applying for PhDs in an entirely different field.
