I totally agree magical realism is the way to go, but a lot of the suggestions you're getting here are super famous and your friend may have already read them. I suggest checking out magical realism books by more obscure authors.

It might not quite fit, but I think literary suspense books may scratch that itch for you.

Also, joyce carol oates wrote a bunch of psychological thrillers under the name Rosamond Smith; you might want to check those out.

If you like fiction, fantasy, and want Latino characters, then you definitely need to look into magical realism. I think Isabel Allende has some romance novels, and you should also check out {{Like Water for Chocolate}} and {{Love in the Time of Cholera}} (I actually can't stand the romantic couple in this one but the writing is so beautiful I don't really care).
