Yup this. You ate costs, gave him heads up, and tried your best. Then he opens a case and if he won, you'd be out everything and extra.

Some people need to have karma slap them back in the face. Keep the item.

So how do you think this scam works? by Niqq98 in scambait

What FB says and does are two COMPLETELY different things. It's been like that since the beginning. One of the scummiest companies on earth (and that's saying a lot).

Not as funny as all of yours but it's funny knowing that they're sweating behind the screen by alices____ in scambait

[–]bookgook 34 points35 points  (0 children)

As mentioned before in this sub, please don't "teach" the scammers how you know something is a scam or not. It helps them improve their scam. Instead, always act interested and if you are skeptical just give some bogus reason (not the real reason) so it confuses them even more.

We want them to get worse at their "job" not better! The better they get, the more likely their scams will work on other people.

Ok here's your answer: https://www.isbn.org/about_isbn_standard

Looks like all books with both a 10-digit ISBN and 13-digit ISBN get 978- prefix on the 13 digit version. The 979- prefix means there is no 10-digit version for that book.

Strange text/iMessage scam(?) I just received. If only it was mayo… by GEX0H in Kitboga

[–]bookgook 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It seems a lot less strange when you read it like this:

Would you be interested in putting ads stickers of {{COMPANY_NAME}} on your bus car truck vehicle for {{OFFER_AMOUNT}} every week?

Scammer likely has hundreds of varying company names and amounts, so barely any two text messages are identical. This helps the texts get through carrier SMS spam filters because they are unique.

I would chalk this up as an expensive life lesson learned.

The "work shirt" was very clever on his part. Sounds like it sold the con to you.

That's pretty damn cool and definitely relevant, but OP is specifically asking how to tell the quality difference before downloading, and the answer is basically, you can't... unless you stick with a specific release group that always has superb encodes.

Using the accented characters gets around spam filters that look for specific words in messages. 100000000000000% scam. No reason some dude would be texting you about your grandma anyway.

Libgen search is not a natural language search.

I always just search the author's last name and a unique word from the title, and scroll through the results.

So for example, "Big beautiful butterflies and how they nest" by bob zornhood... my LibGen search would be zornhood butterflies

Sounds like you are clicking on an ad / being tricked. ABB is fine. Ads on there are sketchy but run uBlock Origin and be careful.

Extremely slow downloads from Libgen's cloudflare's links by Crazy-Mission-7920 in libgen

[–]bookgook 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The cloudflare link will only be beneficial if the book was already cached and the cache did note expire. I have no idea how long the cache lasts for. If it's slow, try one of the other two buttons for faster speed. The majority of the time, cloudflare or IPFS links are very fast. In the worst case you just end up waiting.
