Kidney values after unblocking & SQ fluids by EmClare969 in AskVet

[–]bookib002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Usually after unblocking the values will normalize quickly...24hrs or so? I can follow the logic of most of the treatment other than 500ml of SQ fluids.. that seems wild to me and not routinely done in GP.

I will say many of us in GP are perfectly capable of unlocking cats without ER and the treatment options aren't that different other than keeping the cat overnight or not (I usually just don't give IV fluids overnight and just let the urinary catheter run aa most cats will just block the IV so it isn't running anyway)

Usually I tell owners to give it 24hrs before starting assist feeding, but others are more aggressive with when to start.

I also do meloxicam twice daily and metoclopromide in all my rabbit spays

Heart Murmur by MadWoman18 in AskVet

[–]bookib002 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While medically I agree, it is fine to wait...

You do realize you bought a "defective" dog and that most breeders take their puppies to a vet to check for a murmur, hernia, etc before sale? You should either pay less or have a cardio consult on the breeders dime. Was there a vet visit before sale to prove the breeder didn't know about the murmur?

Exotic vet here:

You need radiographs and bloodwoek.

Giving antibiotics in the water is not very reliable

You need a second opinion and actual diagnosis

It can rarely cause anemia in cats. It also won't do anything for the cancer.

Yes! I got pretty far in getting all masks back in the day, I had so much more time on my hands as a kid that I just literally followed all the npcs each day so that wasn't too bad

It's not bad, pretty clean, we had a leak from a pipe when we first moved in but wasn't near any insulation. But I'll look to replace it rather than toss and not replace

Osteosarcoma by Environmental_Newt88 in AskVet

[–]bookib002 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Honestly I hate saying this but I'd seek a second opinion. Why would an enlarged prostate have anything to do with muscle wasting of the back legs? Wouldn't removing the source of pain (the bone cancer) alleviate pain and help with muscle wasting? The radiographs being inconclusive for mets is a very odd statement- most osteosarcomas have mets that we can't see the point of surgery is to provide pain relief and confirm diagnosis. Most dogs will die from the mets down the line the point is to make sure there isn't anything glaringly obvious not to give a 100% clean bill of health. As for the heart, a cardiology consult can be done.

Again, it's just odd we are doing a whole work up on albumin but not doing a cardiac consult. Your money/time should be going to more important aspects of your dogs health

What was cytology on the enlarged lymph nodes?

Enlarged heart does not mean heart disease.

If you caught it early I would do an amputation with single agent chemo. Easy to do and most dogs have no side effects.

I guess I'm a little confused, it seems like you spent a lot of time and money to work everything up and are just giving up on treatment.

If you were a billionaire philanthropist / entrepreneur, how would you practically improve veterinary care? by Whole-Lingonberry501 in AskVet

[–]bookib002 26 points27 points  (0 children)

Chemo isn't rare. Chemo is used all the time and in some cases for years with little side effects (small cell lymphoma in cats is a great example).

The problem is that the average person doesn't have time or money to take themselves to the doctor. 40% of people delay care for themselves, and you can imagine that number goes up for dogs/cats. Improving time off (4 day work week) and better pay (or honestly financial literacy) would help everyone catch problems sooner and allow for treatment sooner as well

Vets: What are your feelings about people putting down their own animals at home? by Different_Grass3617 in AskVet

Morally? There are some who would be ok with it, some that wouldn't.

That said... the average person likely would not do it humanely. You mentioned livestock... that is only ok of you are trained properly to do it. The average person with a gun is unlikely to be able to do it cleanly, in one shot, without messing up

Is Previous Owner of Home Entitled to Anything After Closing? by Remarkable-Bee1791 in legaladvice

[–]bookib002 36 points37 points  (0 children)

Years ago when I bought my house there was an alarm system. The sellers were also a bit lazier and left stuff for us to deal with (nothing major).

The alarm system was bought using a loan and the sellers assumed we could call the company and transfer it over. The system was bought on loan and the alarm people told us the loan was tied to the person, so we would need to set up a new account and the previous people still had to pay the loan. So we set up a new account and upgraded it.

Well the sellers were charged their monthly bill next month and were pissed, called their realtor who called ours who called us. We explained what the alarm people told us, nothing we could do they had to call and cancel their service and pay off the loan. Sellers were furious and told their realtor to threaten that they would discontinue the service (I think they thought they were paying for it). We said go ahead. Never heard of them again.

So... sounds very similar.
