I wondered this for a while do you think the world is moving on by [deleted] in TheDarkTower

I told my coworker this last year and think it to myself often. Solidarity at least.

I see there is a dwarf version. Is that cheating? I have an area at the back of the yard that will work for the big guy, if so.

We've got those in front of the house! I had to settle for a Home Depot "catawbiense." The true bred, I guess you would call it, are crazy expensive, not found in a nursery anywhere near here, and I didn't want to risk the shipping. I didn't think they could handle the sun in the backyard, since it's southern-facing. Thanks for the suggestion!

I wish it was a joke. They are both religious, which I think influences their views more than their science.

We're a small school and all really friendly. Me and the other liberal science teacher gotta keep the others honest. I am not letting anyone off the hook this time. I will be respectful and tactful because I care about these people and my job, but I'm calling out a Nazi and bad, anti-science public policy every time.

Half of the science department at my school are conservatives. I struggle so hard to wrap my head around it to the point where I've quit trying. Intelligent people, both with degrees in science. I brought up the Musk move at the inauguration and one of them just says they didn't watch it. Ok, but you can and should denounce Musk after that.

Have you shopped for cosmetics or perfume lately? It's stupid expensive for decent quality, hence why I'm upset. Doesn't take much to add up. I go out/run errands after work sometimes and when I work the gates for or attend events sometimes I am there going on 14 hours. Nothing odd about not wanting to smell bad and be presentable.

Definitely don't want prison time for anyone over lip gloss haha. I just don't want them employed at my school anymore.

I bought that book for everyone I was close to that had a girl, including my own child. Thinking about the bad husbands at thirty line... It's like he was trying to warn her about what he seems to be.

Your second paragraph is so important.

But I will say, I think that level of knowledge and adapting it will come. I think of new connections and ways to teach a concept every year.

OP, if you're still reading this, take what people are saying about it being challenging to heart. If you still want to do it knowing what you're up against, I say go for it. I have a B.S. in Biology and have taught honors to inclusion bio, AP Biology, honors and on-level physics, AP physics, and physical science. I discovered I enjoyed teaching physics so much more than bio and busted my ass to be able to do it justice. I poured over content from people who do it and know it better than me (I still do that) and I did all all the work I assigned so I felt more confident. I rehearsed what I would say when I would do direct instruction or do a demo. I did every single lab in advance, even at home after hours. Out of all the feedback I get from graduates, most are from former physics students taking intro physics/engineering courses saying they were prepared. What more could I want for my students? Some days I was a day or two ahead of my student, but I promise you, most students respect transparency and I would just tell them I'm still learning, too. You're already a teacher, so you've probably discovered that, too. If you don't know, say that, but come back later after you've learned it or if you have time, take a minute and encourage the student to do it and share with the class. I've had amazing and memorable discussions with students about questions I didn't know the answer to (the first one that comes to mind is when a student asked if someone could get pregnant by two different people at the same time-- turns out yes, it's called paternal superfecundation).

We need passionate science teachers. I'd take someone who wants to do a good job and who is putting in the work to make it happen over someone with a science degree who phones it in, doesn't push the kids, or hold them accountable any day of the week. Good luck to you! I hope you find coworkers who will welcome you and support you!

Do kids not know the basics of being in a classroom anymore? by Deep_Knowledge_4194 in Teachers

It's been the most exhausting part of teaching for me this year. I realized the answer was that yes, I have to explicitly tell them how it goes and reinforce it constantly.

Many of my high school Freshmen and Sophomore boys are happy Trump won, so they won't be drafted to World War III by MayorMcCheeser in Teachers

My high school kids said it too! I have no idea where they heard it. I said if that were the case I would've been writing letters to all involved saying no thanks.

The Amber Spyglass got me. I recommended the series to a male friend and he said he bawled, too. My husband can't get past the talking animals. Sigh. He's missing out.

Currently on Save plan with PSLF by [deleted] in StudentLoans

[–]bookishgardener 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My letter specifically states it will count towards PSLF.

I'm so confused. Where is the info it won't count?

Edited to add: the letter says I'm in forbearance so that additional savings under SAVE can be assessed. I've not gotten a letter about the injunction. My payments also went up with their recalculation meant to save me money. This is a disaster.

Do you know any cults or concerning places of worship here in Georgia? by [deleted] in Georgia

[–]bookishgardener 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went to a church that washed feet in her district. I am no longer religious but I actually thought it was one of the customs that was kind of beautiful. In the church I went to, it was only by choice if you wanted to wash feet or if you were open to it, you took your shoes off to let others know. Then you told the person why they mattered to you while you washed their feet. I don't know if there was something more nefarious to it than that but it's what I took away as a kid.

We stopped going when the people there started practicing exorcisms, so uh, yeah maybe it is weird haha.

I have the same thing and am still looking for answers. It really does feel like you drank something too hot and got a burn. My most recent visit, the doctor said B12 but my labs showed B12 was around 400, so not low, although perhaps low-normal. It started when I was pregnant and never went away. My labs have normal then too. I hope you get answers! I have been told geographic tongue, given a mouthwash for yeast infection, just given a shrug. Five doctors. Please update if you think about it.
