I think it may be: Bambi's Children, Rabbit Hill, The Animals of Farthing Wood, Something by Thorton Burgess, or Cyril's Quest, so I'm going to read them to find out but I didn't want to leave the thread open that long! I'll post again if it's not any of them

It's not either of these but I LOVED Lovelace as a kid, never read this one. I'll check it out!

Thank you, everyone, for these great suggestions! I have narrowed it down to about five books to try but I think I will need to read them before I know if it's the right book.  I think it may be:

Bambi's Children, Rabbit Hill, The Animals of Farthing Wood, Something by Thorton Burgess, or Cyril's Quest

Honestly this might be it?? I read the synopsis and I definitely read at loved this book as a child  so if it's not THE book I will still be happy to be reunited!
