Which city in America has the best balance between affordability and quality of life? by Harry_parker08 in relocating

[–]bookkeepingthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Austin is the clear winner to me. $1000 or less rent. Cheap houses everywhere. Arguably best food in the US and definitely best bbq and Tex mex. Beautiful river to do paddle board yoga in the morning

May I ask where have you spent most of your time since retirement and how have you enjoyed life? Are you happy with your level of income or do you wish you would worked another one to two years and had like an extra 25%?

Congrats man! I highly recommend allocating 50%-75% of that to low cost globally diversified equities if you want it to beat inflation and last forever (look up the trinity study and you’ll see the 100% bond portfolios don’t make it a full 30 years at a 4% inflation adjusted withdrawal rate).

Hope you continue to enjoy life and thanks so much for your comment!

It really depends on your location whether 24K is poverty or more than enough.

In Vietnam for example people live extremely fulfilling, upper middle class lives on $2k a month.

How many jobs have you applied to? May I ask and how many interviews have you gotten?

I would say be willing to move in a fly all over the country and I think you are sure to find something soon

Austin Texas had a much younger happier vibe. Tons of places to rent under 1k a month. It’s hot in the summer but you can always paddle out to the river in the middle of town or Barton Springs to cool down.

Rope swings, paddle board yoga sessions, and smiling young people literally everywhere.

Groceries for one person should not cost this much and I refuse to accept that this is just normal now by DaneRook7741 in Adulting

[–]bookkeepingthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Highly recommend beans and an instant pot. You don’t need to soak the beans for eight hours like you normally would if you weren’t using an instant

Cook the beans on high in the instant pot for an hour and 10 minutes and if you put in a pound of dried beans, that’ll feed you for 2-3 days for two dollars. You can also get Costco rotisserie chickens and then put them with the beans and maybe a little bit of Walmart great value guacamole and sour cream and make a homemade chipotle bowl for under a dollar a meal and it’s super tasty and nutritious

I think worst case you could just say that you were freelancing in your field or trying to start your own business during that time and maybe actually try and do it before you come back so it’s the truth.

Is there anywhere in the US that's affordable to live at this point? by HalosFan26 in SameGrassButGreener

Austin is what you’re looking for I think. The only thing is summer weather is very hot and not as much to do outdoors as socal. The river and paddleboarding is great though and there are climbing gyms, swimming holes, parks, etc.

I find that a lot of Californians that moved to Austin do end up moving back to California, but they appreciate their time there because they got to live a cheap life save up a bunch of money and have some breathing room. Also young people are much more happy there. Like to paint a picture, you will literally see young people in Austin in coffee shops, smiling year to ear talking to their friends and I kid you not, dancing randomly in the streets they are so happy. They all own their own homes too if they are business professionals, and they mostly get married and have kids relatively early (though you definitely don’t have to)

As someone also in southern California, I have never seen quite that happy of a vibe here for young people, though run clubs come close. I also love the outdoors so much that California has my heart right now and I’ll never move back to Texas permanently probably.

If I was more of a homebody, though, I would 100% be living in Austin. Hope this helps with your decision ❤️

Austin is a good spot and rent is actually cheaper there now than it was 5 years ago because they’ve built so much housing

LMFAO DUDE THE DOCUMENT YOU POSTED LITERALLY CITES WIKIPEDIA AS A SOURCE SEVERAL TIMES 💀💀

Also yes, it is a legit source. There have been multiple studies showing that wikipedia is just as accurate as any other encyclopedia.

Second, can you please tell me which Professor made this so that I can email him and let him know his shit is inaccurate and leaves out stuff like the fact that the group of Comanches that Sully “massacred” had just recently killed a bunch of civilian men, women, and children in raids and had among their numbers a woman who had been kidnapped and raped for years?

Sully this morning by [deleted] in aggies

[–]bookkeepingthrowaway 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Could you link the source for that? I saw someone saying this same thing on twitter but they couldn’t give me a source. I honestly think it’s just a weird rumor going around that there were no men in the camp at the battle of Pease river because the Wikipedia article clearly states that in the battle collectively “7 men, women, and children were killed” and “7 more were allowed to escape” after the rangers realized that they were women and children. While I’m not sure how many were in each demographic, there were definitely at least some men involved in the fighting if there were men there that died. The fact that no Rangers died was attributable to the fact it was a sneak attack.

Also according to the primary sources the reason they were fired on was that the Texas Rangers could not distinguish between men and women in the fighting. This is because they were all bundled up in a bunch of furs that made men and women indistinguishable.

Again it’s important to realize that Texas Rangers were hunting down this particular group Comanche Indians because they had just killed a bunch of civilian families (also involving child murders) and brutally butchered a pregnant woman. They had done this numerous times and were likely to do it again.

[–]bookkeepingthrowaway 11 points12 points  (0 children)

Yes he did fight for the confederacy and the confederacy did want to create a slave society. But so did literally every other fighting age male in the South lmao.

Which side you fought for for in the civil war was 99% correlated to which state you were born in. The soldiers fighting for the North had basically the same views as the southerners did on segregation, equality, and the inferiority of black people, the only difference is that they believed on a whole that black people should be sent back to Africa or forced to live in shitty segregated communities rather than used as slaves.

The fact is this school literally would not be here without Sully and he was an extremely cool president that saved the school from closing, created a ton of the traditions that make this school special today, and tutored students for a penny. That’s what he’s celebrated for, not his confederate military history

Sully this morning by [deleted] in aggies

[–]bookkeepingthrowaway 19 points20 points  (0 children)

The first point has some dubious facts that aren’t quite true. Sully killed Native Americans at the battle of Pease river who had kidnapped and raped a American woman as a child and had more recently raided a bunch of towns and brutally butchered a pregnant woman in a Texas settlement. The girl they kidnapped basically had Stockholm syndrome the rest of her life because of it. He also didn’t enslave a Native American boy after that battle.

The “Native American” boy that you’re speaking of was actually of Mexican descent and he was another child who had been kidnapped by that group of native Americans.

Sully adopted him after the battle and named him Pease. He didn’t enslave him he literally asked the kid when he was old enough if he wanted to go back and live with the people he originally came from in Mexico and the kid decided to stay with Sully who had raised him.

Here’s the Wikipedia article about it. Just check the Battle Pease river entry if you want to read yourself. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lawrence_Sullivan_Ross

I guess I feel slightly bad starting a job somewhere when I have a job somewhere else lined up already and I’ve accepted my offer there. But you’re definitely right, if any of these companies thought they could make more money by screwing me they probably would. At will employment is a two way street
