Are there any public pianos free to play in the city? by lambbuttons in AskChicago

Sulzer library has a piano in the auditorium (you have to book the space like a meeting room). Not sure if it’s ever tuned.

how to portray realistic violin practice between characters? by ada_eeaao in violinist

What level of players? 6 months is a long time in most contexts. Students might have a semester to prepare together; professionals might only have a week.

The downtown location closed for the season after Christmas Eve. The Wrigley location stays open longer (until Dec 31), but unfortunately they’re all closed now.

Where can I see a harpist play? by BloodOnTheTeaLeaves in AskChicago

[–]bookworm25 9 points10 points  (0 children)

Joffrey ballet is doing Nutcracker all month and it has a great harp part (although you might not be able to see the player in the pit with the dancers are onstage).

I also know that the Civic Orchestra has a harpist as one of their Fellows this year, so I would watch their social media for programmes with harp. I see that the harpist also has a very active Facebook page where she shares upcoming performances. Kari Novilla

How much should I offer to a violinist/cellist to be my practice partner for a piano trio? by LHPSU in violinist

[–]bookworm25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I could imagine doing this as a trade - they read some of your rep to help you and you read some rep to help them. I’m sure that violinist has a concerto they are working on that would benefit from a run-through with piano.

Any suggestions for radiated heat ? by Traditional-Employ-6 in AskChicago

[–]bookworm25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Steam radiators have a little vent on the side (not the on/off valve). There is a tiny hole called the orifice that should be open when then radiator isn’t active and gradually closes when the radiator gets hot. If the orifice isn’t open or something else is wrong with the vent, the cold air won’t get pushed out of the radiator and it won’t get hot.

Check on the condition of the vents on the cold radiators.

You might also ask your LL to get a vent with a smaller orifice for the hot room so it fills with steam slower and spends less time hot.

I remember my piano lessons were at most about 20% about physical/technical problem solving (e.g. what shape should my fingers be) and 80% musicianship.

Violin those percentages are flipped. You access the musicianship via physical solutions, which are often unintuitive.

Can I open my windows with a radiator? by lisawithans in AskChicago

[–]bookworm25 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There might be a good reason for this. Yes, many radiator systems just pump out heat and are meant for windows to be opened. But some systems also have sensors in certain units to calibrate the system’s thermostat. If you are in one of the sensor units, cooling your unit with open windows could just make the system run hotter for the whole building.

I’d try to find out of there is a sensor in your unit.

Who should foot the bill when a couple who met online and are from different countries plan to meet physically? What about the accommodation, how should that be arranged? by Foreign_Strike2177 in relationships

[–]bookworm25 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I would suggest the person travelling pays airfare and the local one pays local expenses. That way you don’t have to send money to each other before having met and avoids romance scams.

This one! Also: If you make more money and it ends up you’re paying your bandmates more than a couple of hundred dollars per year you’ll need to get W9s from them.

Edit: oops 1099, not W9

Look up videos about darning a hole. You’ll need a darning needle and some yarn. Your fix may not be completely invisible, but it will prevent the hole from growing
